'16 UT OLB Pookie Maka (Signed to COLORADO)

What do you think of players results after coming back from missions? Any examples of players who excelled coming back?

Good question. Found a decent link for LDS missions: http://www.deseretnews.com/top/686/...LDS-missionaries-in-professional-sports-.html

Of course, that doesn't take into account the general success at only the college level of programs like BYU fielding teams with 23-25 year olds as vets competing against teams whose vets are 20-22 year olds. BYU not ever being a recruiting juggernaut but winning at such a high level certainly points to the advantages of having a more mature team.

Excited for Pookie. Missions are 2 years, give or take a month or so. There is a mission exception, as well as a military exception, that "stops the clock" while the athlete serves. By starting CU this year he will have several months more of maturity prior to his mission and come back to CU with 4 to play 3 in January 2019 with the entire spring and summer to work out and eat well, building stamina and strength prior to the '19 season. The rule of thumb according to experienced coaches and parents that I have talked too is that, after a mission, it takes about a year to get the legs back completely. Great choices by Pookie.

Wouldn't it be best to RS the season after returning?

He could. But it's a big reason he scheduled it to return in December so he would have all of spring semester conditioning & practice + summer training. Better for his football development, I think, than if he'd left for the mission this June. That would guarantee a redshirt year at the end of it. This way, he has the opportunity to conserve that redshirt in case he needs it for an injury or something.

There is a better than average chance that he returns from his mission to, at the very least, a new DC, if not entirely new coaching staff. That has to be tough for LDS guys.

Interesting. If he plays, pretty sure we see him play some ILB and special teams. No way is he ready or big enough for the OLB position. Maybe in some obvious passing situations?

When does he have to announce his intentions to leave for his mission?
Lets say he comes in and starts all season, has a great year.
Does he change his mind and not go on mission?

LDS guys really do put those types of scenarios "in god's hands". And I'm not being facetious or condescending; my business partner is LDS and it's still sometime surprising how once he's prayed on a decision; it's up to the higher power, come what may.

He absolutely loved Leavitt and was supposedly the reason he came here. Not surprising if that is true.
