The Colorado Buffaloes escaped with their first Pac-12 win of the year over the spiraling Oregon State Beavers on Saturday. In a game where the defense struggled to contain the run and the offense relied heavily on rusher Phil Lindsay, a lone ‘Black Out Boy’ broke free for a career performance.
Senior wide receiver Bryce Bobo racked up a career-high 126 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions on Saturday. He also threw a touchdown to quarterback Steven Montez on a reverse in the second quarter, the Buffs’ first passing touchdown of the day.
“Bobo’s got a good arm, he thinks he’s Michael Vick, but he’ll never be,” head coach Mike MacIntyre said with a laugh after the game.
Prior to CU’s bout with the Beavers, Bobo had not managed a 100-yard game since 2016’s face-off with Arizona State, or a multi-touchdown outing since 2014. It was only the second 100-yard matchup of his career, and the first 100-yard game by any CU receiver against a Pac-12 opponent this season.
MacIntyre commended Bobo’s performance, with a nod to play-calling and CU’s signal-caller as well.
“[Bobo]’s a big target with a big body down there on some of those ‘bang slants’ as we call ’em. Steven [Montez] throws those the best of anything and Bobo catches them really well.”
In a season where CU has struggled to get their passing game going, unleashing Bobo on the Beavers sparked an offensive surge that carried the Buffs to a win. While it was a huge defensive stop by Leo Jackson and a missed field goal that sealed the victory for CU in the final seconds, the offense kept fighting until the very end, going punch for punch with Oregon State throughout.
“I came in 2013 and we’ve just always been that team that kept in the game but could never finish,” Bobo said after the win. “Some of the older guys like me, George [Frazier], Phillip [Lindsay], we try to instill that in the team to never give up.”
The Buffs offense still has a way to go, but tonight was the first time that the unit seemed to find a rhythm against a Pac-12 opponent. For a team on the verge of losing their bowl eligibility and sitting at the bottom of their conference, a win in Corvallis is so much more than just a ‘W’ for the Buffs.
“It means everything,” an emotional Bobo said after the game. “We didn’t expect our season to be like this. We expected to come back and have the same type of season that we had last year, but sometimes things just don’t happen like that. For us to finally get this win just assured us that we got it in us, we just got to keep this going.”
