The Multi-event athletes are starting things off today in Southern California, and already a school decathlon record time for dual-sport Buff Isaiah Oliver in the 100M sprint. Congrats to him!

EDIT- Make that TWO school individual event decathlon records for Mr. Oliver.

Live results for the decathlon/ heptathlon are available at http://apu_ftp.sidearmsports.com/custompages/live/mtsacce/

Article now out after the 1st day of the multi-events-

"
AZUSA, Calif. – University of Colorado sophomore Isaiah Oliver broke three 10-year-old school records in the decathlon and currently sits in first place at the California Invitational here Wednesday. Oliver, a defensive back on CU's football team, broke the 100 meters, long jump and 400-meter decathlon school records which dated back to 1997.

WHAT HAPPENED
Isaiah Oliver is sitting nicely in first place (CU Invite 'A' Section) in the decathlon with 4,044 points after the first day of competition. Oliver started the day with a third-place finish in the 100 meters, finishing in 10.84. Just as he did in the indoor season Oliver, broke yet another school record as he clinched the CU decathlon 100-meter school record. This record was previously owned by Jordan Hudgens, who ran his time of 10.87 in May of 1997. 23-7.25. Oliver went on to add a decathlon school record in the long jump landing a 7.18/23-6.75 mark to finish second and earn 857 points. This record was last set by Grant Cleghorn in May of 1997.
...

In the women's heptathlon, Maja Wichhart-Donzo put together four strong events and currently sits in fourth overall with 3,132 points in a very competitive field. Her 200 meters moved her up four spots as she clocked a 24.55 to finish second and earn 929 points. This gives her the fifth fastest 200 meter heptathlon time in CU history and second fastest performer behind Heather Sterlin who competing in 1996-97.
...
UP NEXT
The second day of the California Invitational Combined Events is Thursday. Events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Heptathlon long jump.
...
"

And, Coach Malone's video of Mr. Oliver setting his 3rd decathlon individual event record of the day-

Question ... If the old records were set in 1997 and it's now 2017 doesn't that make the records that Isaiah broke 20 years old, not 10??

(At minimum) a couple great finishes for the heptathletes! Hopefully the decathletes can also bring it home strong.
(Note- looks like the results in the tweet are not complete for all athletes, as some of the top scorers from the 1st day still don't have results posted for their last 2 events, including Buff Wichhart-Donzo, who was in 4th at the end of the day yesterday.)

Per the below, looks like a couple more great results with big PR's for a couple Buffs. (In addition to the 2 Buffs noted in the above post and those turned in by Buff leaders Mr. Oliver and Ms. Wichhart-Donzo, noted in the below tweets, with big PR's (who ended up 3rd and 5th, respectively), a second Buff male (Andrew Ghizzone) also looks to have earned a big PR with 7,045 points (vs. 6,876 going into this season) and finished "in the points" here in 7th place.)

And, right after I write the above, see the full article is out which I'm sure says things better than I did-

Especially for any Bay Area Buff and/ or track fans, wanted to note the track season ramps up this weekend in a BIG way, as the Buffs have their biggest outdoor meet so far this season this Friday and Saturday, as their are 71 separate CU listings at Stanford's Cardinal Classic per the (linked to below) Entries List. Notably, I think it will mark the 1st time most of the elite distance athletes will be SERIOUSLY toeing the line.

I believe most all*** of the distance runners have raced somewhere already, but for almost all it was at CU or other higher altitude meet, and the fields weren't as deep as they'll be at Stanford. I'm guessing a major goal for all the top athletes will be to possibly get NCAA Regional qualifying times/ distances/ heights so they can just worry about winning, or at minimum finishing as high as possible in the points, at the Pac 12 championships.
***This will be the 1st outdoor race for CU's top NCAA Indoor Championships performer Dani Jones, who is entered in the 800M here rather than the 1500M which I believe I heard in an interview will be her main emphasis this season. (I'm assuming/ guessing it's thought she can likely earn a 1500M qualifying time at a later meet, and this will be either a "rust buster" for her, and/ or potentially a chance to earn an additional (800M) qualifying time for Regionals.)

(Note- Even for those runners and field athletes who don't make an NCAA Regional qualifying time/ mark THIS meet, there's an even more famous meet for FAST times and NCAA qualifying attempts, the Payton Jordan Invitational, also hosted by Stanford. Believe that meet also has some pros, including former Buffs, usually entered, with most of them also looking for looking qualifying times, although in their cases it's for for U.S. National Championships.
Note- Payton Jordan is a one day meet, being held this year either May 5th (on Stanford's schedule) or May 4th (per CU's schedule).)

Other Buffs will be competing at the "Jack Christiansen Invitational Outdoor Track & Field Meet", also being held Friday (Hammer throws only) and Saturday at CSU. Can't find an entries list and/ or heat sheets for this one yet, so don't know which or how many Buffs will be participating at that meet.

(Note- Per the notes, looks like for this CSU meet that only the men's and women's hammer throws are scheduled for Friday.)

Note- was curious as to what times are somewhat safe qualifying marks, and found this link which allows anyone to search both this year and, since it's still somewhat early, prior years' times by gender and event to get an idea of what should/ might qualify for regionals in the various events (this filter only shows West regional athletes)- https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1686.html .
Combined list for the whole country (will I'm sure will, especially, be obsessed over by the multi-event athletes around the country around the time of conference championships) is at https://www.tfrrs.org/lists/1912.html

(From an NCAA website, number of regional qualifiers are
  • it looks like top 48 individuals (based on best times, heights or distance during the season) in each of the 2 regions (West and East) who accept invitations*** in each event qualify for regionals, and top 24 relays. (***Assume each year some top 48 athletes, because of either late injury or qualifying for multiple events, don't accept some invitations, so that could mean those right below the top 48 still could get to compete at regionals.)
  • For multi-event athletes (decathlon and heptathlon), it's just top 48 point scorers for the current season (through conference championships) in each event who qualify for the NCAA Championships- no regional action for them.

Article posted earlier today about the 2nd day of the Cardinal Classic. Looks like quite a few more NCAA regional qualifying marks and PR's!-

Also, congrats to Buff alum (http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=1991) Laura Thweatt!

Running in only her 2nd competitive marathon, she finished 6th at the London Marathon, one of the major (top 6 or so) marathons held each year. She also posted the 7th fastest time ever by an American woman at the distance. Ms. Thweatt, sponsored by Saucony, must still live in or around Boulder, as she's part of / trains with the Boulder Track Club.

Article from her hometown paper about her race at https://durangoherald.com/articles/152930 .

Short interview-

So, it's an off-week for the current Buffs, but wanted to mention one of if not THE GREATEST CU track alums, Olympic bronze medalist (along with MANY OTHER marks, championships, and titles) Jenny (Barringer) Simpson is starting her outside season tonight at the Drake Relays, running in her normal 1500m race against many other top Americans. The race is scheduled to go off at 8:04 PM Iowa Time, so assume 7:04 MT. I can only remember one other race for her this year, that being the anchor leg of a Distance Medley Relay Team that set a world best ever time in a race held way back in late January.

In addition to Ms. Simpson, Sara Vaughn, another Buff alum, will also be in the same race. (Among her many running accomplishments, Ms. Vaughn made it through the 2 preliminary rounds and finished 7th in last year's U.S. Olympic Trials finals at this distance.)

Note- NBCSN is also scheduled to be televising the Drake Relays tomorrow (Saturday) from 3:00 - 5:00 ET (assume 1:00 - 3:00 MT). Don't know whether or not they will either re-show or at least give highlights of the women's 1500M race, or if they'll just be covering live action taking place then.

Oops- looks like I was wrong about the Buffs being off this weekend, as it sounds like at minimum the distance crew is (I assume) continuing to chase NCAA regional qualifying times in Corvallis this evening. (In my defense, it's still not on the cubuffs.com schedule.)

Meet home page - http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/2017/1/24/2017-oregon-state-high-performance-meet.aspx (Interesting it says the men and women will be racing the 10K run at the same time.)

Edit - Heat Sheets - http://www.osubeavers.com/documents/2017/4/27//2017_OSU_HP_FINAL_HEATS_1.pdf
(Just looking at the distance Buffs entered, this is a SERIOUS effort, with many competing in their main events and/ or searching for secondary events where they might earn another qualifying time.)

Nice start of the outdoor season for Jenny Simpson!

(Next up is I assume the start to the meat of the season- the Diamond League meets.)

I count 5 more probable NCAA regional qualifying times out of yesterday's work. Nice job Buffs!

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Dani Jones lead the way for the University of Colorado's track team on the first day of the Oregon State High Performance Meet here Friday. Jones, winning the 1,500-meter race, also produced the 10th top performance all-time at Colorado with a PR of 4:12.68.

Up Next: The Buffs return to action tomorrow on the second day of the OSU High Performance Meet with the meet kicking off in the field at 11:00 a.m. MT.

With it being the "distance crew" here, most of the Buffs are done at this meet. However, there are 4 Buffs (3 women and 1 man) in the heat sheet for the 800M races being run later today (MT). Impressively to me, two of them are Buff true freshmen, Ms's. Hurta and Boreman. IF they don't scratch after yesterday's hard races, they will be doubling from the races noted above, so don't know what type of result they'll get, but both are trying to earn their 3rd NCAA qualifying times, both now having probable qualifying times in the steeplechase and 1500M (at least based on the prior 2 years times needed). If one or both don't make it at this meet, I'd guess, if it's a priority distance for them and the coaches, they will have a strong chance at Pac 12's to get a qualifying time, as I assume a very good time is needed there just to compete. (Just looked it up, and last year looks like 6 of the top 15 West Region qualifying times, and ~11-12 West qualifying times overall, were earned at Pac 12's.) Edit- Not that probably anyone cares, but did want to add the 2 noted above already have times that MIGHT qualify for Regionals, it's just that they're not sure things yet. Last year, 2:07.74 was the last (48th) qualifying time, and Ms. Hurta and Boreman have run 2:07.15 and 2:07.51, respectively, this season.

Re Ms. Jones, her 1500M PR time didn't move her any higher up CU's record book at the distance (she impressively was 6th already after her freshman year in one of the Buff's best historical events), but she did get closer to many other great Buffs of history. If she can improve that PR sometime later in the season by ~2 seconds, she will jump all the way to 3rd in the Buff record books at the distance in just her sophomore year. Assume based on her great performances to date this year, another nice side goal for her and the coaches might be (???) for her to run a 4:09.5, which is (per http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Outdoor-Championships/Qualifying-Standards.aspx ) the automatic qualifying time to be able to compete at the U.S. Outdoor Championships this year.

Seems like CU is improving in other than distance events. If so, is the IPF paying dividends in T&F?

Yes. IPF is making a big difference for T&F. Also helping a bit is MacIntyre being supportive of football scholarship athletes competing in T&F to score some points.

While I'm thinking of it, wanted to preview this weekend's action. With last week’s Oregon State High Performance meet seeming largely taking the place of the Payton Jordan Invite, this weekend is quiet for MOST of the current Buffs. In order of meet, though, there is definitely still competition going on-

  • A little later today in the morning (10:00 AM Mountain Time TV/ streaming start), the 1st meet of the year in the major international professional track and field series, the Diamond League, starts in Doha, Qatar. Buff great alum/ Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn will be toeing the starting line in a STACKED 3K steeplechase field that includes, among others, the Olympic gold and silver medalists. (If I’m converting the time right, looks like the steeple is scheduled to start at 11:05 AM MT.) This will I believe be her 1st official race of ANY kind since she was part (with Jenny Simpson among others) of the women’s team that in late January ran to an all-time best time in the indoor distance medley relay (DMR).

Note- IF I'm reading the below linked article correctly, there’s a major change this season in determining how the Diamond League champion for each track or field event will be determined. It used to be the champions were just crowned based on points earned over the entire season in the various individual races. This season, looks like there will be more of a "playoff" system in place, with points earned over all but the final race of the season just used to determine WHO races in that final championship race at the end of the year for each event. The overall season winners (of the “diamond” award and season prizes- $50K for champions of each event, etc.) will be determined based solely on the finish in that last event race (https://www.diamondleague.com/news/.../road-to-the-final-new-diamond-league-format/ for more detail).

  • This evening, the Payton Jordan Invitational is being held at Stanford, and there is one current Buff on the Heat Sheets - red-shirt junior Ben Saarel in the 800 meters (section 2 race). I'm guessing at minimum he's shooting for an NCAA regional qualifying time, after already currently holding a very safe NCAA (currently 3rd in the west) qualifying time in the 1500M (I believe his main event). Already the holder of the Buff all-time 1500M record time by over a second but not currently showing up in the Buff's record book at all for the 800M, be interesting to see how low he can go in a field that contains a few pros who should be going fast enough to keep him at a strong pace. Looks like the approx. 800M start time for Mr. Saarel's race is 8:40 PM MT. (Per the CU record books, looks like he'd have to go around 1:49.5 to become one of the Buff's Top 10 outdoors in the event, while the CU record (from way back in 1989) is 1:47.52.)
Just quickly eyeballing the rest of the Payton Jordan field (sorry if I’m missing anyone), do see one former Buff alum to root for- Sara Sutherland is shown as being in section 1 of the women's 5000M.

  • Last but certainly NOT least, The Pac 12 Multi-Events (men's decathlon and women's heptathlon) competitions are being held in Corvallis this Saturday and Sunday. I'll give more info on this (live stats link, etc.) later, assume when Cubuffs releases a preview article.

Well, just after i write the above, the track team (or whomever) trips me up.

Per the below, and reviewing the entries list linked to below, many of the sprinters, hurdlers and field athletes are evidently going to an Air Force meet being held this afternoon.
(After having neither last week's OSU meet or this one listed on the schedule, and still showing the Payton Jordan as being yesterday, looks like the cubuffs.com track and field schedule might need a little work.)

Anyways, Go Buffs!

Wow- ridiculously quick steeple for an early season meet. Emma Coburn only runs ~7 seconds off her American record (9:14.53 vs. 9:07.63), a VERY respectable 1st steeple of the year, and she's a distant 5th place, as the top 3 (2 Kenyans and a Bahrain runner born in Kenya) all finish under 9:02. As reference, only 2 females have ever finished under 9 minutes, so for them to run so close to that so early in the season is very impressive. (Or, looking at it another way, up to this race there had been only 8 races ever in history run under 9:06 (run by a total of 4 different runners), and this race alone had 4.)

Ms. Coburn does get a valuable 4 Diamond League points, so still a decent start for her to qualify for the final race at the end of the season.

Looked like quite a few PR's, which will hopefully lead to some nice points at next weekend's (for all but this weekend's multi-events) Pac 12 Championships, as well as NCAA qualifiers!
