Figured I'd start this thread now, as the teams just released their schedules. (men's and women's are identical).

And, if I remember I started this thread when the season starts in a few months, plan on also using it for us to give previews and results for all the regular season races (in other words, until the Pac 12 Championships), as well as any other news happening (how the Buffs are doing in the rankings, etc.).

Release: June 21, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO — For the second straight season, the Pac-12 Network will broadcast the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships live, showcasing once again one of the top meets in the nation. The meet will take place on Oct. 26 in Stanford, Calif., with Stanford University hosting the men's and women's championships.

The championship is one of six meets on the Colorado Buffaloes schedule, announced on Thursday. Like they have done in the past, the Buffs will kick off their season at the CSU Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., (the date has not been released).

Three meets will take place in Madison, Wis., starting on Sept. 28 with the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Two weeks later, CU will return to Madison for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 13. The final meet in Wisconsin will be the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17, but before the Buffaloes can get to nationals, they will have to race at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship on Nov. 9 in Provo, Utah.
The Buffs return a solid core of harriers this fall. The women's team, which finished third at NCAAs after winning their third straight Pac-12 team title, return two All-Americans from that squad (junior Sage Hurta and senior Dani Jones) as well as senior Mackenzie Caldwell, who was an All-American in 2016. The men placed second at the conference meet in 2017 and return All-Americans redshirt junior John Dressel, sophomore Eduardo Herrera and junior Joe Klecker.

2018 Colorado Cross Country Schedule
TBA at Colorado State Invitational (Fort Collins, Colo.)
Sept. 28 at Nuttycombe Invitational (Madison, Wis.)
Oct. 13 at NCAA Pre-Nationals (Madison, Wis.)
Oct. 26 at Pac-12 Championships (Stanford, Calif.)
Nov. 9 at NCAA Mountain Region Championship (Provo, Utah)
Nov. 17 at NCAA Championships (Madison, Wis.)

As I also mentioned in a thread I quickly set up for this year's fall sport media day (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/20...-day-olympic-sport-content-august-4th.133911/), Coach Wetmore had a press conference today as their season looms. Content arising from it-

LoL

In Wetmore we trust.

As with all the fall sports, the start to the 1st official competition clock for cross country is ticking, with the 1st races starting 3 weeks away (from yesterday).

(In his press conference I linked to a couple posts above, sounds like the cross country teams report a little later than the other fall sports, but their practices are now imminent (scheduled to start this coming Tuesday).

With the cross country teams about a week away from their 1st races (then they don't race for another 4 weeks*) in Wyoming, a new preview article and interview-

(*Don't hold me to it, but I seem to remember Coach Wetmore saying in the past that these 1st early races (late August/ very early September) aren't something he's that excited by, but you have to run one to be able to start practicing as early in the year as they want to per NCAA rules.)

To finalize my various posts and new threads of teams in action this weekend, wanted to note that cross country (both the men's and women's teams) joins ALL*** the other fall sports (football, soccer and volleyball) in being in action this Friday, as the harriers are journeying up to Cheyenne to officially start their season at the Wyoming Invite.
(***Can't recall (with my admittedly crappy memory) ALL 5 of the fall season teams being in action on the same day, but assume it has happened at least a few times. Still assume it's relatively rare, and there's also the bonus this year, as I mentioned in the Pro track and field thread, of Buff star alums Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn racing probably their biggest races of the year in Brussels just after noon on the same day.)

Re the Wyoming Invite, Wyoming's preview article - https://gowyo.com/news/2018/8/29/wyoming-cross-country-hosts-season-opener-on-friday.aspx

"
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The University of Wyoming cross country teams are set to open the 2018 season this Friday, Aug. 31, when they host the Wyoming Invite at the Little America Golf Course in Cheyenne, Wyo. The women's 5-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the men running the same distance at 6:30 p.m.

Wyoming will welcome some of the top teams in the nation to the event. On the men's side, No. 7 Colorado, No. 9 Colorado State and No. 16 Air Force will join the Brown and Gold, as will regional foe Northern Colorado. On the women's side, No. 2 Colorado will enter the field, as will Air Force, Northern Colorado and a Colorado State squad that is just outside the top 30 in the country.
...
"

Note - Can't see any indication of a separate web page for live results, so assume we can just follow Buff twitter (https://twitter.com/CUBuffsTrack) and read a post-races cubuffs.com article to learn the results. (Assume they'll mainly be concentrating on their own runners' progress, but assume as host there's also a chance Wyoming may also post or link to overall results on their Twitter page (https://twitter.com/wyo_track ).)

(I would GUESS (especially if Wisconsin isn't allowing runners to run as "individuals" or unattached), the 7 current "starters" for each gender might be in Wisconsin, the site of this year's NCAA Championships, while others, looking to make an impression, will probably be at Stanford

Release: September 26, 2018

BOULDER — The 2018 cross country season is about to kick into high gear for the University of Colorado as the Buffaloes will compete at a pair of meets this weekend.

The first contest of the weekend is the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Friday, Sept. 28, in Madison, Wis. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the site of the 2018 NCAA Championship. The Buffs will send their varsity squad to that race to compete against 34 other teams. In addition to the championship men's 8-kilometer and women's 6k race, there will also be a pair of 'B' races. Teams are allowed to run seven athletes in each race.

The day will begin at 11 a.m. CT (10 a.m. MT) with the women's 'B' race, which will be followed by the men's 'B' race. The championship races will begin at 12:20 p.m. CT (11:20 a.m. MT) with the women and men will start at 1 p.m. CT (12 p.m. MT).

All four races will be streamed online, but a subscription is required.

This will likely be the first race of the season for most of CU's varsity racers, including All-Americans John Dressel, Eduardo Herrera, Sage Hurta, Dani Jones and Joe Klecker.

The other meet CU will send its emerging varsity harriers to is the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The women's 6k race will start at 9:50 a.m. PT (10:50 MT), with the men's 8k following at 10:30 a.m. PT (11:30 a.m. MT).

Colorado enters the weekend as one of the top teams in both polls. The women are ranked second overall, while the men are seventh.

(For convenience, copying the schedule from the above post- "The day will begin at 11 a.m. CT (10 a.m. MT) with the women's 'B' race, which will be followed by the men's 'B' race. In the women's B race, Buffs lead by senior McKenzie Caldwell with a 6th place finish. Also I assume a reasonably solid finish by redshirt frosh Baylee Jones (Dani's little sister) in 14th.

Buff finishers in this one-

27 86 Karina Mann JR Colorado 21:44.7 5:50

Unofficially, looks like the Buff women may be the winner of the "A" Championship team race, led by Dani Jones in 4th and Makena Morley in 6th. (Below could very well be adjusted some.)

Congrats to them!!!

Looks like the men finished in 8th place. On the bright side, Buff leader John Dressel, who had to miss all last cross country and track seasons due to injury, has a very nice 1st race back and leads the Buffs with an 11th place finish. On the not-so-bright side, only 6 out of an allowed 7 Buffs ran, with I assume the missing harrier being another Buff leader, Joe Klecker, not showing anywhere on the results. Hopefully whatever kept him out of today's race is minor. (Sometimes unofficial results just miss a runner if his/ her timing chip falls off or is defective, which is what I hoped was the case here. However, results are now showing as official (http://hss.eclipseracetiming.com/xclive/men.htm), so looks like that wasn't what happened.)

Cubuffs article on the races-

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/9/28/cross-country-cu-women-win-nuttycombe-wisconsin-invitational.aspx

"
MADISON, Wis. — In the first big race of the 2018 season, the second-ranked University of Colorado women's cross country team did not disappoint as they won the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational against an impressive field on Friday afternoon at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

Colorado recorded an 11-point victory over No. 5 Boise State (80-91) and a 50-point win over top-ranked New Mexico (80-130) despite the Lobos placing three in the top 10.

"This is the first serious race we've been in; I think the women were careful and controlled bearing in mind that there's seven weeks to go, so we were happy with their outcome," head coach Mark Wetmore said.

The seventh-ranked CU men did not fare as well as the women, placing eighth with 278 points. The two-time reigning NCAA Champion Northern Arizona took home the title with 46 points, defeating the runner-up, Wisconsin (135), by 89 points.
...

MEN'S RACE:
The CU men did not finish how they would have liked, however they did race without one of their top runners, All-American Joe Klecker, who according to Wetmore was "a little banged up."

"He's our number one runner most likely," Wetmore said. "In all of our training and in most of our races last year; but we were not able to use him, so we were operating with the rest of the team and that probably made a 100 points or maybe a little more difference in our score."
...

UP NEXT: The Buffs have several harriers in Stanford, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 29. The women's 6k race will start at 10:50 a.m. MT and the men's 8k race follows at 11:30 a.m. MT.

BOULDER — For the first time this season, the University of Colorado women's cross country team is the top-ranked team in the country, according to the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. CU's men are also ranked in the poll, coming in at 11th.

The women had been ranked second in the first four polls of the season, but moved up to the top spot after defeating then-top-ranked New Mexico by 50 points (80-130) at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Sept. 28. The Buffs earned the team win, while UNM was third. CU beat the runner-up, then-No. 5 Boise State, 80-91.
...

The Buffs will be off this weekend, but will return to Madison, Wis. on Oct. 13 for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational.

A little over half of this ~30 minute Flotrack show features an interview with the Buffs' Dani Jones (starts around 1:00 of the show) -

What are generally*** the biggest cross country races of each regular season on the schedule, the Pre-Nat(ional)'s, are scheduled for this Saturday at the site of November's NCAA Championships, Madison Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course (https://uwbadgers.com/sports/2015/08/21/GEN_2014010143.aspx).

Because there are so many teams entered, both the men's and women's fields have been broken into 2 races (named the Cardinal and White), and yesterday Flotrack announced which teams are racing in which race. Per the list linked to below, both the CU women and men are in the Cardinal races. (There are also Gray races, which are for individuals that the teams want to race, but weren't chosen to be one of the top 7 for the Cardinal or White races.)

Note- Some Heavy- duty cross country fans are upset that the goal of choosing who is in the Cardinal and Whie races was to generate as equal of competition in each race, rather than having an "A" and "B" race, so some heavily- anticipated match-ups won't really be seen until the NCAA Championships. (For example, the Northern Arizona and BYU men are considered the heavy favorites to be fighting it out for the NCAA Championship, but are in different races on Saturday.)

*** Assuming the individual entries lists (see link below) are current and accurate- As a Colorado fan, kind of bummed (but understand it) that the coaches must feel the top women got enough of a look (and put themselves in good Kolas points(****) shape with their win) of the same Madison course at the Nuttycombe races held a couple weeks ago, as currently the only one who raced in the "A" race there who is entered for Pre-Nats is the Buffs' 7th finisher. Along with her, the other 5 Buffs entered for Saturday are some of those who raced in the Nuttycombe "B" or Stanford Invite races a couple weeks ago. Hopefully, at minimum a couple will shine so the coaches have even more great options for their top 7 team later in the year (which is I assume the Buff Coaches' goal from this race). (Be interesting to see how much the coaches' and other polls ding the CU women based on their finish with this Saturday's line-up.)

The top Colorado men ARE entered, with I assume the 9 main options for the top 7 later in the season on the entries list. This includes the Buffs' top ranked runner Joe Klecker, who was a late scratch at Nuttycombe. Great that it therefore appears whatever kept them out of that race was minor.

(****) Kolas points are used to determine which 13 teams for each gender each season are (mathematically) selected for at-large berths to the NCAA Championships. https://www.flotrack.org/articles/5056368-full-breakdown-of-the-ncaa-cross-country-qualifying-system and https://www.thestridereport.com/understanding-kolas are a couple pages that come up when I do a Google search of the NCAA cross country championship selection process. If there's ANYONE interested, see those for more info. (Of course, I'm sure the Buffs will be looking for an auto-qualifying berth, which will be accomplished with a top 2 finish at the NCAA Mountain Regional race.)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado cross country teams are heading to the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Madison, Wis., this Saturday, October 13, for their final race before the postseason begins on Oct. 26.

The top-ranked women and 11th-rated men will face off against some stiff competition with several top-30 teams racing at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The women will race against nine ranked teams, including three other top-10 squads in No. 4 Oregon, No. 7 Arkansas and No. 9 BYU. The men's team is set to go against 10 top-30 programs, which includes the reigning NCAA Champion, top-ranked Northern Arizona.

Due to the number of entries, there will be six races, three 8-kilometer races for the men and three 6k races for the women. CU will compete in the Cardinal races; there will also be White and Gray races.

The day will kick off with the women's Cardinal race at 10 a.m. CT (9 a.m. MT) and will be followed by the women's White race (10:45 a.m. CT). The men's Cardinal race will follow at 11:30 a.m. CT (10:30 a.m. MT) with the White race at 12:15 p.m. (11:15 a.m. MT). The Gray (unseeded) races will be the final two of the day with the women running at 1 p.m. CT and the men at 1:45 p.m.

A stream for the entire meet will be provided at FloTrack, but a subscription is required to view. Live stats are available as well for free.

The postseason will begin for CU on Oct. 26 at the Pac-12 Championships. Stanford will host the event at the Stanford Golf Course. More details will be available in the next week.

Media notes - https://cubuffs.com/documents/2018/10/10//2018_Pre_Nats_Notes.pdf

From a few Twitter accounts, sounds like it's frosty this morning at the course (shocking for Madison!). Because of this, Wisconsin has tweeted out a revised schedule, with the 1st race delayed a half hour, so still a half hour or so from starting.

The Women's Cardinal race is now scheduled to start in 5 or so minutes. (Looks like link to the current races live splits will be https://live.recordtiming.com/meets/1507/xc-scoreboard .)

As I noted above, the coaches must have seen all they needed to from the top Buffs a couple weeks ago when they upset #1 New Mexico, as based on the entries list, the top 6 finishers from that (Nuttycombe) race aren't racing today. Therefore, the Buffs probably won't be competing for the win as they otherwise would. Should be some valuable experience for the 6 who are going today (1 senior, 3 juniors and 2 redshirt freshmen), and I'm sure the coaches may use this to form an initial list of which of these runners might be able to fill the 7th (and possibly 6th) spot in the NCAA Championship team.

The beginning of a BUSY quadruple header day for Buff sports (2 cross country teams, soccer and football) has officially begun!
