CU track and field: Buffs look to change perception at NCAA prelims

Gifford finished in 6th place in his heat, which was good for 40th overall. He was half a second off of the final spot.

Up next is the men's 3000m steeplechase. There are 3 heats and the top 3 from each heat qualify plus the next 3 best times. Blake Theroux is the lone Buff in the race and will start it off in heat 1.

He's still in the lead group but really needs to get back to 3rd to guarantee a spot in the next round

1 lap to go and it doesn't look like he will finish top 3. He definitely needs to have a good time.

Theroux finishes 4th in 8:49.95. Let's hope it's good enough to advance.

The final event for the Buffs is the women's 300om steeplechase which should begin in about 25 minutes. The same rules apply as the men's race. Shalaya Kipp and Melanie Nun will represent CU in the first heat.

After the 2nd heat, Theroux now holds onto the final spot. He has to hope that this final heat, outside of the top 3 runners, is slow.

Kipp still leads the lead group of 4 who are pulling away from everyone else it appears

Kipp does not break the meet record but wins easily in 10:03.87, which is over 6 seconds more than second place. Melanie Nun finishes in 5th with a time of 10:18.86. She really needs the final two heats to be slow to get one of the last qualifying spots

Melanie Nun moves down a spot after heat 2 and now sits in the final qualifying spot with the final heat coming up.

Melanie Nun will finish in 14th, just out of the final spot. Kipp finishes in 3rd and will go to Eugene for the NCAA championships. The last day of the regionals is tomorrow.

The women's hammer throw has begun and Emily Hunsucker is competing in the 3rd heat.

Emily Hunsucker advances to the NCAA championships by finishing in 1st place in the regional. Congratulations to Emily!!!

The first track event for the Buffs today will be the men's 1500m. The top 5 from each heat plus the next 2 best times will advance to the NCAA championships. Ben Saarel will compete in heat 1 and Jake Hurysz will be in heat 2.
