Buff lacrosse (1-2, 0-0) are scheduled to host the Aztecs (2-3, 0-0) this Sunday at noon morning (See post below for time change). Did want to emphasize that (also noted below) the team is planning on playing a rare home game indoors, this one at the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF), due to the BIG scheduled storm forecasted for this weekend.

Unfortunately, it was announced yesterday (https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/3/11/lacrosse-fridays-pac-12-opener-against-oregon-canceled.aspx) that the game scheduled against Oregon that was scheduled for today has been cancelled due to Covid-19 protocol issues within the Ducks program. Hope all ends up OK with them.

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER — The Colorado lacrosse team is set to host former Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival San Diego State this Sunday, March 14, at 10 a.m. MDT.

Due to impending weather, the game has been moved to the Indoor Practice Facility. With the move indoors, no fans or player guests will be allowed. Only team personnel, staff and media will be allowed to follow COVID-19 policies. The game will be streamed live on CUBuffs.com; links to the stream and live stats are available on the lacrosse schedule page.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs (2-3) will face Denver on March 12 before play CU on March 14, but DU is not the only opponent SDSU has in common with CU. SDSU opened its 2021 schedule against four straight Pac-12 teams, USC, Oregon, Arizona State and California, before falling to UC-Davis (18-7). The Aztecs lost to USC (20-6) and ASU (23-10), and recorded wins against Oregon (11-9) and Cal (12-11).

Lexi Tan is the top goal scorer for SDSU with 11 on 23 shots. She is tied for the team lead in points with Emily Resnick, who also has 11 points (6g, 5a). As a team, the Aztecs are averaging 9.20 goals per game on 24.6 shots per game. In net, Katy Sharretts has spent 285:55 of the 300:00 minutes and has allowed 16.16 goals against. She has made 56 saves for a 42.1 save percentage. In the draw circle, Bailey Brown has recorded 18 of SDSU's wins, while Resnick has another 11.

THE SERIES: Since the two teams starting meeting in 2014 as members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Colorado has never lost to SDSU. The Buffs own a 7-0 mark against the Aztecs, which includes a pair of overtime victories in the first two meetings. The very first, a 7-6 decision, was in Boulder on April 13, 2014, while the second was on May 1, 2014, in Denver at the MPSP Tournament. That was a 9-8 win for the Buffs. The third meeting was also decided by one goal (7-6/April 12, 2015 in San Diego), but since then, CU has won by no fewer than five goals.

UP NEXT: The Buffs wrap up their homestand with a pair of match-ups against Stanford (March 20) and California (March 22). With the cancelation of their previously scheduled Pac-12 Conference opener against Oregon due to COVID issues within the Ducks' program, the contest against Stanford will be the conference opener for the Buffs.

wonder if there are some cover or heat issues as a lot of players not at the game for CU. Willard, Burnside, etc

Just to update this one- it's 12-5 Buffs, as the Buffs owned the 1st 10-2 but it's been 2-3 Aztecs so far in the 2nd, which has around 10 minutes remaining.

Notes -
  • All 10 Buff 1st half goals were by 3 players, with Rudy and Grozier picking up 4 each, and Bayer earning the other 2. (Phillips scored the 1st Buff goal in the 2nd half, while Grozier just earned her 5th.)
  • In what I assume may be a record, or close to it, the Buffs scored 2 goals in the last 13 seconds of the 1st half.
  • I was curious, and it looks like by being played in the IPF, the field may be around 15 yards narrower than the typical, preferred field width. (60 meters or 65 yards) Also, although it looks like the goals are the right distance apart (92 meters or 100 yards), the field to the sides and behind the goal are shortened, especially on the corners where the track cuts into what would ideally be a rectangular shaped field.
