Fight HARD to stay undefeated Buffs!

(Note- probably doesn't mean much one way or the other, but this game could give the Buffs one of their 1st INDIRECT indirections of where they stand against one of their Pac competitors, as USU lost to USC 55-46 yesterday.)

RENO, Nev. –The University of Colorado women's basketball team will take on Utah State on Sunday to close out the Nevada Nugget Classic. Tip is set for 1 p.m. MT.

The Buffaloes improved to 4-0 on the season with their 65-52 win over tournament-host Nevada on Friday. Colorado totaled season-highs in steals (18) and blocks (8) in a strong defensive effort. CU shut down the Wolf Pack offense in the third quarter, holding Nevada to 0-for-12 from the field. Colorado outscored UNR 17-1 in the quarter to overcome the Wolf Pack's halftime lead.

Junior Quinessa Caylao-Do made a strong case for an all-tournament selection. She led all players with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Senior Kennedy Leonard provided seven assists on the day to go with her nine points and five rebounds. Senior Alexis Robinson notched 11 points, hitting 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

Utah State (2-3) has lost its last three contests, entering Sunday. The Aggies got off to a hot start to the season, upsetting Washington State on the road. USU also defeated Northern New Mexico College, 106-35, to start 2-0. The Aggies fell in their tournament opener, 55-46, against Southern California. Steph Gorman led the way with 14 points in the loss.

Sunday's game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network. Fans can listen to the Buffs all season long on AM 630 (KHOW).

Team continues to look good during this early part of the season.

Oh frick- I went off the article (and never caught the corrections) and got the starting time wrong. Oh well- it's half time.

NOT a good defensive quarter for the Buffs in the 3rd, but the offense is pretty effective so they keep most of their lead going into the 4th.

Buffs pick up the intensity and have some nice late game offensive possessions (and defense picked up some too), and get the W!!!

That is a really nice win. Especially on the road early in the year when you have to bounce back from losing the game momentum. Buffs pulled it together to make plays and finish. That gets me more excited about this team.

Undefeated!

USU looked well coached, had good energy (seemed to get a LOT of the loose balls), and had a post that went off for her career high. Looks like a team which could do well in the Mountain West, and hopefully be a solid RPI win for the Buffs.

it is rough watching Diop on offense. Need Knight and Swartz to get healthy and be able to contribute. Defensively she does some good things but imo a liability on offense

USU is 2-4 with wins over Washington State and Northern New Mexico. They have lost to Oregon (by 30 at home) and USC (by 9 9n Reno). Let's hope they do well in conference play and help the Buffs RPI, but I'm not holding my breath. And this wasn't a road game, it was on a neutral court in Reno.

Because there aren't many teams on the non-conference schedule that aren't Pac 12 caliber it's gonna be really hard to tell much about this team until they hit conference play. Yes, I am not at all convinced that this team will win significantly more conference games than last season's team did.

Is Cam not 100%? If that's the case I hope she gets healthy soon. Same with Aubrey.

On radio pre-game, JR said Knight will be assessed by medical staff when they get back to Boulder. She looked to be in pain when she went down yesterday, a lot of pain.

Cam had a heart procedure. I am not a doctor, but would guess her conditioning would have suffered because of the procedure.

Diop seems to be doing a good job on defense. If she wasn't, she wouldn't get to play because she doesn't contribute offensively.

Would like to have games where the freshmen see playing time. Never know when they will be needed in a game.

With the exception of Miami (a week from today) most of the remaining non-conference games look to have the potential to get a lot of playing time for the freshmen.

Of the five freshmen, thus far, Emma Clarke seems to be a solid addition on the offensive end. Once she got over the jet leg from her excursion to India she's played with confidence and poise.

I've also liked the play of Sila Finau in her limited time at point guard. She is heady with the ball in her hands. It seems she has the right stuff to be a solid point guard for this team in the future.

And how could forget Peanut? She is very confident and plays aggressively. She's already making a difference on both ends. She's the toughest Buff in the post right now.

POSTGAME QUOTES:
Head Coach JR Payne

Overall thoughts
"It got a little dicey. I would have loved to have gone up 15 and stayed there. The reality is we need close games from an experience standpoint. We also need to work on maintaining the lead. We need to do some of the things that were working early in order to keep that lead."

On the team's different contributors
"To have that many players in high-double figures. It was not just 10 points, we had people in the high-teens. That was fantastic. I have to talk about Mathilde [Diop]. She did not play a lot in the first few games. Her effort off the bench, when they were making their run, was instrumental. We needed to get some stops and she came up huge. She was tremendous for us."

On finding a way to win
"We had to dig deep. I am proud of our seniors and juniors down the stretch. They were calm and really led us down the stretch when things were getting a bit crazy. We needed that from them."
