No. 6 Colorado Heads Back to the PNW: Five Things to Know

Buffs wrap up a four-game road swing

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER –
No. 6 Colorado jets off to the Evergreen State to wrap up the four-game road stretch. The Buffaloes will take on Washington State (Friday, 8 p.m. MT) and Washington (Sunday, 1 p.m. MT).

Colorado (17-3, 7-2 Pac-12) fell three spots to No. 6 this week in the Associated Press rankings, following its road split of the Oregon schools. CU has been in the rankings for 13 straight weeks and inside the top 10 for 12 consecutive polls.

Washington State (15-6, 4-4 Pac-12) scored its first ranked win of the season last week, defeating then No. 2 UCLA, 85-82. The Cougars are 3-2 this season in games decided by five or fewer points. Bella Murekatete has four double-doubles this season, coming off a 16-point, 11-rebound performance against UCLA.

Washington (13-6, 3-5 Pac-12) took down then No. 11 USC for its second ranked with of the season last Sunday. The Huskies held the Trojans to 59 points in the win and are 10-1 this season when keeping opponents under 60 points. UW is 11th in the NCAA this season in scoring defense, limiting opponents to a 54.1 scoring average.

Five things to know
  1. Injured Cougar – WSU will be without its senior All-American guard Charlisse Leger-Walker for the remainder of the season. She suffered a torn ACL in WSU's win over UCLA. Through 21 games this season, she totaled 278 points, 137 rebounds, 107 assists and 36 steals and recorded a pair of triple-doubles.
  2. 60 and Below – The Buffs have held opponents to 60 or fewer points in nine games this season, the last coming at Oregon (48 pts). CU has won 31 consecutive games when holding opponents to under 60 points. Oregon's 48 points were the fewest allowed in conference play and the second-fewest allowed this season by the Buffs.
  3. Freebies – Colorado is shooting 74.3% from the free-throw line this season. Frida Formann has been the team's best free-throw shooter, hitting 93.0% (40-43) from the line. She has made 18 consecutive from the stripe, having started the season a perfect 22-for-22.
  4. Road Buffs – Colorado is 4-1 on opponent's floors this season. CU is a combined 15-6 in true road games since the 2022-23 season. Friday will be CU's last visit to Beasley Coliseum as a conference opponent. The Buffs haven't fared well in the Palouse, going 3-8 in Pullman. Colorado has fared slightly better on the west side of the state, going 5-8 against the Huskies in Seattle.
  5. Point Guard U – Colorado was one of two schools to have both a men's and women's representative on the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20. Jaylyn Sherrod continued to be on the national list along with KJ Simpson on the men's side. UConn is the only other school with players on both lists.
Both games this weekend will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. Cindy Brunson and Stephaine Hawk Freeman will call Friday's action. Elise Woodward and Angela Taylor will be on the mic vs Washington on Sunday.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.

It's 15 all after the 1st quarter.
(At least based on my (always suspect) memory, Coach Payne has deviated from her normal substitution pattern so far in this one. My recollection is that she usually has some of her top subs in within the 1st 4 or so minutes of the game, with only one or two entering at a time. In this one, she waited ~7-1/2 minutes to sub anyone in, and then put in 4 at one time.)

Foul disparity is starting to become a little silly in this one. I can be convinced that all of our fouls were correct calls. But having a hard time believing Washington State has committed so few in comparison when there’s been a few obvious missed ones. Currently 10-4 in that regard.

Will be nice to be in the big 12 next year

With this win and Stanford’s loss to USC, we’re now back in 1st in the PAC!! Way to go!

Stanford has a pretty easy schedule ahead. They play at UCLA Sunday. Then only really challenging game for them is against Oregon State. Our Buffs have road games at UCLA, USC and Utah. Can we win out and win the regular season title???

Buffs win!!! 63-57

That amazing end to the 3rd got us back in it and we took the lead. Frida with 27 carried us but we also kicked their butts rebounding the ball.

Sherrod struggled but hit the big shot of the game to put us up 4 late and forced Wazzu into fouling.

Buffs Take Care of Business in Pullman

Frida Formann ties her career-high with 27 points in the win

By: Tanner Kay, Athletic Communication Associate

PULLMAN, Wash. --
Beasley Coliseum traditionally is a tough place to get a result for Colorado and Friday night was no different. The sixth-ranked Buffaloes had to battle from behind to closeout Washington State by a score of 63-57 in the last regular-season Pac-12 visit to the Palouse.

It's Colorado's (18-3, 8-2 Pac-12) second win in a row in Pullman, improving to 4-8 on the road against WSU. Washington State falls to 15-7 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-12.

It was all Frida Formann and Aaronette Vonleh for Colorado, combining for 47 of the team's 63 points. Formann accounted for all six of the Buffs' 3-pointers, knocking down 6-of-9 on the night. She tied her career-high with 27 points, totaling 20 points in the second half alone. Vonleh tallied 20 points along with eight rebounds, her fourth game this season in which she has scored 20 or more.

"Road games are always going to be like that," Formann said following the win. "But I think also, we made it a little tougher for ourselves than we probably needed to, especially in the first half. But I'm proud of us for digging ourselves out of it and playing a really gritty team. They lost one of their best players [Leger-Walker] and we knew they were going to come out and play for her. So just proud that we got out with a dub."

Colorado trailed by as many as six in the third quarter before getting the offense back on track. CU shot just 35.5% (22-62), its third straight game under 40.0%.

"I don't want us to start overthinking anything," head coach JR Payne said postgame. "We have a great team. We have great point guards. We have great shooters with great post play. We have a ton of veterans. We have everything we need to be as good as we want to be but sometimes, are we thinking about it too much? Sometimes that'll mess with you more than missing shots. Everybody just simplify and do your job and I'll keep it simple and I'll make sure I'm doing what I can to be prepared and we're good."

Colorado had nearly double the amount of turnovers as Washington State did (14-8) but outrebounded the Cougars 50-38. Quay Miller was huge for the Buffs on the boards, snagging a season-high 15 rebounds.

Four of the five Washington State starters logged 8 or more points but did not get a single point from its bench. Tara Wallack led the Cougars with 19 points.
...

KEY MOMENT
Trailing 36-30 halfway through the third quarter, sharpshooter Frida Formann found the hot hand, nailing three straight 3-point field goals in as many attempts to give the Buffaloes a one-point lead at that point in the game. She helped Colorado finish the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.

UP NEXT
The Buffaloes will head to Seattle on Sunday afternoon to take on the Washington Huskies, looking to close the four-game road trip with three wins.

NOTES
Colorado improves to 11-14 against WSU and 4-8 in Pullman…Second game this season with two players over 20 points (UT Arlington)...25 first-half points were the fewest scored in a half this season…Miller surpassed 100 career assists at CU (101)...Friday was CU's third-lowest shooting percentage of the season...Miller's 15 rebounds were the most by a Buff since she recorded 19 at Oregon State last season...Miller moved past Jamillah Lang for 18th all-time in rebounding now at 628...Kindyll Wetta tied Alexis Robinson for 17th all-time with 162 career steals.

I agree. The fouls called on us before WSU started intentionally fouling were good. The problem is WSU was playing every bit as physical as CU.

The opening of the 3rd quarter was ridiculous.
