It's the last home games of the year for women's hoops, as they host the Washington schools, with Sunday also being Senior Day for Great Buffs Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson. Hope there's a nice crowd for the team in general, and especially the seniors.

Preview (mainly for WSU game)-

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's basketball team is set to close out the home schedule this weekend at the CU Events Center. The Buffaloes will play its final two home games of the season against Washington State on Friday (7 p.m.) and Washington on Saturday (1 p.m.)

It is not only the final home games of the 2018-19 season, but it will also be the final time fans will be able to watch seniors Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson take the court in the Black and Gold.

CU's two seniors have been mainstays in the Buffs' lineup since their freshman season in 2015-16. The two players have played their way into the CU record books, leaving a legacy that will be tough to match.

"It will be a fun weekend," head coach JR Payne commented. "We have two fantastic seniors who have really poured their heart and souls into this program. It will be really wonderful to celebrate them."
...

"Those two were my first recruits here," Payne recalled. "When I arrived here in Boulder, both of them had their releases in hand and were one foot out the door. I worked hard over those first few months and into the summer to tell them why the should be here and help build this program with us. Although they were already Buffs, they were our first commits I guess. They have been a really special part of this place."

Neill Woelk, CUBuffs.com's contributing editor, will have a closer look on each senior later on this week.

Both games this weekend will be available through the Colorado live stream. Fans can continue to find the Buffs all season long on the Buffalo Radio Network, AM 630 (KHOW) locally and online at CUBuffs.com/Listen.

The Game: Colorado returns home for the final time this season hosting Washington State and Washington in its final homestand. CU got swept by the Washington schools on its first Pac-12 road trip back in early January.

About the Buffaloes: CU will look to finish the season strong. Colorado has four games remaining before the Pac-12 Tournament. The Buffs currently sit 12th in the standings but can move up with a strong finish. CU has four players averaging double-figure scoring this season. Senior Kennedy Leonard (13.5 ppg) leads the group. Senior Alexis Robinson (12.8), junior Quinessa Caylao-Do (10.7) and sophomore Mya Hollingshed (11.4 ppg) round out the top-scorers.

About Washington State: The Cougars have won their last two games, both at home against Arizona and Washington. WSU's 33-point win (94-61) over Washington was its largest in the Apple Cup series. WSU is 1-8 on the road this season. Borislava Hristova leads the Cougs with 20.9 points per game.
...

Friends Night Out: Bring a friend to Friday's game against Washington State and get a GA ticket, hot dog and soda for $13.

Free Dad Hat: Students in attendance can receive a free Chip "Dad Hat" while supplies last.

The game against wsu is under way. (It's 0-5 wsu early. Looks like the Buffs have gained Kennedy Leonard in the starting lineup, but Alexis Robinson looks to be out again.)

27-26 Buffs at the 2nd quarter media timeout. (Be interesting to see how they do out of the timeout, as per the announcer, there was a full 5 person team ready to sub in for CU.)

Nice offensive flow this game (I'm sure helped by Leonard being back), and the Buffs are up 3 at the half 38-35. (Ref's letting this somewhat physical game play out, with both teams only having 2 free throw attempts.)

Buffs call timeout as they go down 4 with around 6 minutes left in the 3rd.

As often happens, the long ball hurting the Buffs big in this one, as wsu is 7-15 from 3 vs. the Buffs 2-10.

Buffs tie it up at 47 at the 3rd quarter media timeout with 2 CU free throws pending.

Not great offense from either side lately, but Buffs hold a 61-56 lead as wsu takes a timeout with around 5 minutes left in the game.

A couple random (non-game related) notes-

  • BIG congrats to Buff radio color commentator (Among MANY other things) Carol Callan on an honor she received a couple days ago.

Congrats Buffs. The Buffs didn't play to lose like they have in some other games when they have found themselves ahead. They played to win. It helps so much to have Kennedy Leonard on the floor. Even when she was playing the off guard, she has so much knowledge of the game that she shares with her teammates.

Have a great Senior Day, Kennedy. I hope Alexis Robinson can at least play a bit in tomorrow's game.

BOULDER – Freshman Peanut Tuitele scored a season-high 23 points to lead Colorado to a 72-61 win over Washington State on Friday night at the CU Events Center.

Colorado (12-14, 2-13 Pac-12) got contributions from all over the floor. Junior Quinessa Caylao-Do scored 16-second-half points to finish with 20 on the night. Senior Kennedy Leonard totaled 12 points, eight assists and two rebounds in her return to the starting lineup.

"We are just thrilled to get to play again," head coach JR Payne commented. "We are thrilled to have this type of effort and it result in a victory. We have had tremendous efforts like this, we just haven't had the victory to show for it as often as we would like. I just want our team to really enjoy the success of their labor tonight."
...

WHAT IT MEANS: The win moves Colorado out of the basement of the Pac-12. The Buffs jump over Washington for the 11-seed in the standings. The Huskies fell to 1-13 in the conference with its 88-56 loss at Utah on Friday.

KEY STATISTICS: CU's plus-16 rebounding margin led to 17 second-chance points…Colorado outscored WSU 12-2 on the fast break.

NOTEWORTHY: The Buffs played without Alexis Robinson for the second consecutive game…the win is the program's 800th...Colorado improved to 11-6 all-time against Washington State…CU shot over 45 percent from the field for the first time since its win over Southern California…Tuitele became the first freshman to score 20 points since Hollingshed on Mar. 2, 2018 (20 against Oregon)…it was the second time this season CU had two players score 20 or more points (Leonard, Jank/North Carolina)...Leonard moved into ninth all-time on CU's scoring list (1,597)...CU's nine turnovers were the third-fewest of the season…CU totaled 22 points in the second quarter, marking a new second quarter high for Pac-12 games…the team's 46 points in the paint was the most in a conference game this season.
...

NEXT UP: CU closes out the home season with Senior Day on Sunday. The Buffs will host a pregame ceremony honoring Kennedy Leonard and Alexis Robinson prior to taking on the Washington Huskies (1 p.m.).

If you follow JR on Twitter, she has been sharing photos of her time with Kennedy and Alexis. The photos are bringing big smiles to my face. I hope both players have many happy memories of their time at Colorado.

Note - I assume due to her injury, looks like Alexis Robinson is just a ceremonial starter, as she was replaced right at the opening tip and was hugging players (including some Huskies) as she left the court.

Buffs at least give themselves a chance as they whittle a udub lead that I believe was up to 16 or 17 points down to 10 at the half.

Buffs down 24-34 at the half. Clarke has kept them in the game by hitting 3 treys for 11 points total.

CU committed 10 turnovers in the 1st quarter.
