I'm sure some of the assistants are good coaches. But how would you tell? Besides, when the team is this bad it's not like someone can claim he's doing a good job.
I look at it from a standpoint of if we were starting over, here or at another school, with reasonable but not unlimited funds, which of the assistants would you say yes you have a job to? Which would you say no way, I would rather hire someones GA? and which ones would you say meh, maybe?
In the order they show up on CUBuffs.com
Cabral - yes, he has a history of recruiting and developing quality players. May be the assistant most hurt by Hawk's presence.
Ambrose - yes, hand picked by Greg Brown who was smart enough to get out when the getting was good. Has done well with the DBs even with a lot of injuries and very little help from the front seven. Seems to be a good recruiter but time will tell.
Collins - no thanks, in sync with Hawk, in other words in over his head. Has failed to make the adjustments needed to win games, doesn't inspire greatness (or even mediocrity,) won't adjust scheme to personel. In a word he has sucked.
Johnson - no, see Collins above but substitute O-line for defense. Has an NFL first round draft choice and another probable high pick on his line along with a lot of other talented players yet can't seem to run block or pass block. Players don't get better under his coaching.
Riddle - No, watch any Buff game on special teams and you don't need to ask any more questions. May be the worst assistant on the staff based on the performance of his position.
Kiesau - maybe - seems to be a pretty bright guy who has been held down by Hawk's meddling. Good recruiter, might be better as a position coach instead of a coordinator.
Bandison - no - not as bad as some others but talented players seem to disappear under his watch. What has he done to deserve another chance? I don't see much.
Hagan - no - Buff legacy and bright guy who can recruit but seems to lack the skills to work with and get the best out of a lot of players. Again, who has gotten better under his coaching vs. how much talent has been run off or wasted.
Prince - maybe - Has shown some ability to get his players ready and develop. Motivator who cares, this year must be killing him. Not a big track record to go on but I wouldn't have a problem with him coming back.
The GAs and Interns we don't know enough about to make a judgement on. I wouldn't mind finding a place for Sykes on the staff if a good fit can be found.
