As with the other more "individual" sports, thought I'd set up this thread to report on notable results for the indoor track and field men's and women's teams throughout the regular season, as well as any other general news that pops up during the season regarding the teams and any of their individuals. (Separate threads will be set when the 2 biggest meets of the year get near to starting up - the MPSF (Conference) Championships (2/22 & 2/23) and of course NCAA Championships (3/8-3/9).)

As always, I recommend anyone interested in following the team (especially related to her multi-event and jump athletes but often also covering the team in general) follow Coach Lindsey Malone on social media (https://twitter.com/CoachLMaloneCU and https://www.instagram.com/coachlindseymalone/), as she's probably the most socially media conscious and comprehensive of any CU coach in any sport. Of course, the main track accounts (https://twitter.com/CUBuffsTrack and https://www.instagram.com/cubuffstrack/) also provide updates , and can be valuable to follow, especially to keep up with the often NCAA championship-level distance athletes.
(Note- I believe the CU coaches usually give the top distance folks a competition break for awhile after cross country season before they start again worrying about indoor, so we might not hear much about them until, at least, the new year. Some other schools do have their runners do a quick race or two trying to capitalize on their cross country fitness to earn NCAA qualifying times (one young woman from the U. of New Mexico just ran the 3rd fastest time ever for an indoor 5K in a Boston race), but I can't recall the Buffs doing this.)

The teams (mainly looks like the multi-event folk) started action today in Golden at, I assume, the School of Mines, and looks like we already have a school record EARLY in the season for an individual event within the women's pentathlon. Congrats to senior Maja Wichhart-Donzo!

Article on today's action in Golden. Congrats again to Ms. Wichhart-Donzo, this time for a very good overall (and winning) pentathlon, especially for the 1st competition of the year, with a couple other pentathletes also already posting better or close to better scores than they did all last indoor season.

GOLDEN – Three women of the University of Colorado track and field program posted top marks in the pentathlon Thursday evening to kick off the 2018-19 indoor track and field season at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi in Golden.

Maja Wichhart-Donzo, Michaela Wenning and Drianna Mustin all posted marks that replicated or bettered their marks from the MPSF Championships last indoor season. Wichhart-Donzo won the event with a mark of 3,909, a 100-point improvement from the end of last indoor season. Wenning was second with a score of 3,832, and 80-point improvement, while Mustin scored 3,506 which was three points from matching last season's best mark.

Wichhart-Donzo's score was just four points from tying the national-leading mark in the early season. She is just the second woman to break 3,900 this season in the NCAA with teammate Wenning sitting third in the rankings. Mustin's mark will put her fifth in the very-early rankings.
    ...

Wichhart-Donzo's final point total puts her fourth in school history with the sixth-best ever result in the event. It is also the best mark ever run in the state of Colorado in school history, beating Abrianna Torres's mark in 2015 at the Air Force Academy by more than 20 points.

On the men's side in the heptathlon, freshman Josh Farmer sits fourth after a day of competition while Davis Butte sits ninth and Aaron Carmichael is 16th.
    ...

The gentlemen will begin tomorrow's events with the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault and conclude the meet with the 1,000-meter run.

Also for Colorado, Gunner Rigsby jumped 6.99m (22-11¼) in the long jump to place fourth.

Running events begin tomorrow at 11:20 a.m. with the women's hurdles, an event CU will have three in. Field events start at 10 a.m. with triple jump. The throwers this weekend will be in action at the Air Force Holiday Open and begin competition in the afternoon.

Note- I originally missed that there was a preview article posted yesterday for this meet (and the one at Air Force tomorrow where a couple throwers look to be going) at https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/12/4/track-and-field-buffs-open-season-across-front-range.aspx .

From that article, a few links -
Live streaming of the Colorado School of Mines meet (IF the links start working, nice they offer this- it's VERY rare for regular season "non-elite" meets. Hope maybe the Buffs can for one or both of their home meets this season.?.) - http://www.minesathletics.com/tv and/ or https://minesathletics.com/www.minesathletics.com/tv

Looks like (along with some other results) the men also had some nice finishes in their multi-event competition that ended yesterday. (Edit- have to say the below doesn't sound totally accurate re the Buff men's place nationally in the multi-events. Mr. Butte ended up in 5th (and still obviously great he earned a PR this early in the season); assume they're saying he has the leading score in D1 track (???) so far early in the season; but 3 D2 athletes finished ahead of him (along with the winner being an unattached CSU heptathlete), so I wouldn't say he leads the nation.)-

GOLDEN – Just a day after the CU women posted the first and third best marks in the nation in the pentathlon, the University of Colorado track and field program's male heptathlon student-athletes Davis Butte and Josh Farmer posted the first and fourth-best marks in the nation Friday in Golden at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi.

After finishing the first day of competition in ninth place, Butte exploded in the second day of competition to take over the national-leading mark at 5,011. The first event of day two was the 60 hurdles in which he ran 8.69 for a fourth-place finish. The lone event that he won was the men's pole vault in which he posted a huge personal best with a jump of 4.80 meters (15-feet, 9-inches). He finished out the second day of competition with a sixth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.22. His total score was nearly 400 points more than his season-best last year. He also became just the eighth Buff to break the 5,000-point mark in school history.
    ...

The other key event for the Buffaloes this Friday was the women's 60-meter hurdles. A trio of CU women made it to finals in the event, making up nearly half of the field. Eriana Henderson inched out the win against teammate Valerie Welch as the duo were so close they actually hit each other numerous times in the race. Henderson picked up the win with a personal-best time of 8.67, edging out Welch by just two-hundredths of a second. Teammate Kylie Davis also eclipsed the 9-second barrier with a race of 8.99 for fourth place.
    ...

A handful of other Colorado athletes competed in field events across the front range this weekend. High jump duo Giancarlo Narvarte and freshman Jeremy Cody both had good performances at Mines with leaps of 2.01m (6-7) and 1.98m (6-6), respectfully. Gunner Rigsby posted an early season mark of 13.72m (45-0¼) in the triple jump, while on the women's side Sarah Hopkins nearly matched her season-best of last year with a jump of 11.64m (38-2¼). Cheyenne Cheshier also performed well with a mark of 11.41m (37-5¼) as the women finished third and fourth in the event.

Down South to the Air Force Academy, four CU throwers took to the ring in the Air Force Holiday Open. The women posted a pair of top-four finishes in the weight and shot put, while Brock Knechtel threw for the first time indoors in his career with a mark of 14.02m (46-0) in the weight. Mariah Walker threw 13.71m (44-11¾) for a third-place finish in the shot put, while Elisa Grandemange threw 16.61m (54-6) in the weight to finish fourth. Walker also threw 14.15m (46-5¼) in the weight.

It was a short and quick prelude to the upcoming season as the team will be off for more than a month before it returns to action at home January 11-12 for the Potts Indoor Invitational.

Congrats to Dani Jones on being nominated for the Bowerman!

    Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/1/7/t...he-preseason-watch-list-for-the-bowerman.aspx

    "
NEW ORLEANS — University of Colorado senior Dani Jones has been selected to the Preseason Watch List for The Bowerman, collegiate track & field's highest honor, which is presented by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Jones has seen a great deal of success on the track throughout her career. She was the 2017 NCAA indoor 3,000-meter run champion and was a member of the CU school record-setting distance medley relay team that won the NCAA title at the same meet. A two-time outdoor All-American in the 1,500, she also owns freshman school records in the 800 (2:05.27) and 1,500 (4:13.44).

During the 2018 summer, she raced in the high performance section of the 1,500 at the Prefontaine Classic and finished first with a then-personal best of 4:07.33. At the 2018 USATF Championships, she brought home a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 4:09.16.

The initial watch list consists of 10 women and will be updated throughout the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.

    ....

*It is important to note that performances achieved in cross country, or any other sport other than indoor and outdoor track & field, should not be considered for the honor.

Also, as indicated in the tweet but not discussed in the article, one of two chances to see the indoor track and field team in Boulder this season (on the 11th and 12th) at the Potts Indoor Invitational. (Assume more on the Invitational upcoming.)

Aztec you are the undisputed best at keeping the rest of the sporting activity at CU on our radar. We have many excellent contributors to football (including you), Goose and a few others hoop it for us, but you carry the big load on the rest. Thanks!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program concluded the 2019 Potts Invitational with three wins on the women's side Saturday afternoon in Boulder, led by six in the finals of the women's hurdles.

The women's hurdle finals was the largest points scoring event for the Buffaloes with six individuals scoring in finals, led by Eriana Henderson's 8.59. Valerie Welch placed second at 8.68, barely beating teammate Dani Johnson by two-thousandths of a second. Freshman Kylie Davis broke the 9-second barrier at 8.91 seconds for fourth, while Drianna Mustin finished sixth at 9.20 and Kylee Harr ran 9.34 for seventh.

Johnson continued to excel after posting 8.53 in the hurdle prelims. In her third race of the day in the women's 200 Johnson ran 25.05 to take the victory. Harr joined her with an eighth-place finish at 26.21.

The final victory came in the women's mile where Mackenzie Caldwell came back from behind to take the race in the final lap at 4:56.40. Lindsey Koch and Baylee Jones were fourth and fifth in the race at 5:09.75 and 5:09.97, respectfully.
    ...

Despite not picking up a win the men had numerous strong performances, led by Duane McClurkin Jr. who finished second in the 200 at 21.43 seconds and led the men's 4x400 to a second-place finish at 3:16.46.
    ...

Numerous meet records fell in the second day of competition in the third installment of the meet. The most impressive performance came from nation-leading Marybeth Sant from CSU in the 60-meter dash. Despite not having a prelim, Sant ran 7.18 seconds to break the meet record and the facility record by nearly two-tenths of a second. Other records fell in the men's 200, men's 3,000, men's 4x400, women's 400 and women's shot put.

Most of Colorado will not compete next weekend except for a few individuals that will head to New Mexico to compete in the MLK Invitational.

The University of Colorado track and field program will send 10 student-athletes to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the MLK Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Most of the athletes traveling are combined event athletes working to fine tune some of the events in the pentathlon and heptathlon. Also a pair of male high jumpers and a duo of horizontal jumpers are making the trip.
    ...

The rest of the squad will take the weekend off, then most of the team will compete at Air Force next weekend before the entire Colorado track team comes together at the Colorado Invitational January 31st to February 1st.
