SKILLMAN, N.J. – A pair of University of Colorado women’s tennis student-athletes received Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) accolades this week as freshman Dhany Quevedo was named the Mountain Region Rookie of the Year, and senior-to-be Winde Janssens was named the region’s Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship winner.

Quevedo is the fourth CU regional rookie of the year since 2004, while Janssens is the third CU tennis student-athlete since 2005 to earn the sportsmanship award.

The mountain region makes up one of 12 ITA regions nationally (the others Atlantic, Carolina, Central, Midwest, Northeast, Northwest, Ohio Valley, Southern, Southeast, Southwest, Texas).

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Quevedo began her collegiate career this past spring semester winning 10 matches, including six victories at the No. 3 singles position. She also played the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively and defeated four regional opponents.

“Dhany did a great job coming in at (the spring) semester and performing in the top 3 of our singles line up,” head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “This is a hard task to do and she took away a lot of quality wins during her first semester of college tennis. Dhany really showed us what she’s capable of and look forward for her to continue making strides next season.”

Janssens junior year was her best season-to-date winning a team-best and personal-high 13 spring singles matches, with 10 of those at No. 2. She added three more wins at No. 3, also a career-best at that position. Overall, Janssens tied for the team lead with 16 victories.

In doubles, the Peer, Belgium native racked up an additional 11 wins in dual play tying for the team lead with fellow senior-to-be Carla Manzi Tenorio. Janssens also won a personal-high nine matches at No. 2. On the career CU list, Janssens ranks No. 28 in doubles (39) and No. 39 in singles (40).

This is the third accolade this month for Janssens, who was also named the team’s clutch player and most valuable player at the end-of-the-year tennis banquet.

The Cissie Learysportsmanship honor is awarded to a Division I women’s player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team’s performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis coach Cissie Leary.

“Winde has always performed with a lot of heart on the court and she is a great representative to herself, her family and to the Buffalo family,” Kenneally said. “This award is a testament of how other schools and coaches view Winde in the heat of competition. We are excited to have Winde gracing us with her abilities for one more year before she graduates.”
