How much of UW is Lake, and how much is from Pete Kwiatkowski
It's a lot Kwiatkowski. I don't know why you guys value recruiting over x and o when it comes to a head coach. To me, you get a head coach who knows how to develop talent and be a CEO then you get assistant coaches that know how to recruit. The position coaches are the ones that do most of the recruiting anyways. How much of UW is Lake, and how much is from Pete Kwiatkowski
SOLD! We'll take Lake for $0.02.It's really both. They are both incredible. As a Husky fan I wouldn't trade either for any coach at Alabama so long as we have Petersen. Seriously. Kwiatkowski has mastered the entire defense whereas Lake specialized in DBs, at least until this year.
There is no doubt Lake is a rising star. As amazing as Kwiatkowski is, the fact he respected Lake so much he was willing to step down to "co" DC speaks volumes about his temperament and dedication to Petersen's system.
I will say that I've never seen a better DB coach at UW than Lake. Ever. He is also our top recruiter and I would expect that as long as he has input into the DB's any DB going to his program should expect to sniff the NFL barring injury.
Also of note is the entire Husky defense has worked on the rugby-style tackling that the Seahawks implemented and popularized. They are taught to never lead with the helmet. It is better for player safety and improves the players fundamentals with tackling.
The only worry I would have in hiring Jimmy Lake is the fact that he has only been a co-(DC) coordinator for a year. Otherwise I don't think he would find a better program than CU to get his first HC gig.
As a Husky fan I really hope we retain him a little longer. As a person, I hope Jimmy gets the opportunity he is seeking and I wish him the best of luck with future success, wherever that may be. I would certainly root for him to do well at CU when they're not playing UW.
$0.02
It is a cultural thing in a program and it HAS to start at the top. CU just fired a coach who knew his X's and O's and could "develop" talent and be a CEO. He never fully embraced recruiting and was ultimately fired because of it. You have to believe recruiting is the lifeblood of any good college football program or you're going to fail. It's a lot Kwiatkowski. If anyone here spent 1 hour talking X's and O's with MacIntyre on either offense or defense, I think that person would come away thinking MM was a football savant. These guys have forgotten more X's and O's than anyone here can ever hope to learn. His downfall was not emphasizing the pure talent and athleticism that's needed to win at the big time level. Period.Every coach with at least a coordinator position in HS, NAIA, JUCO, DIII, DII, FCS, G5, P5, CFL and NFL knows his Xs and Os. Actually, that's true of prettifying much ever coach on every staff along with anyone who has played the game to at least the college level.
Sure, there are innovators who separate themselves. And there are guys who have a feel for calling plays. And there are certainly some guys who are smarter than others or put in longer hours and do a better job with game planning. But they all know their Xs and Os.
What I'm getting to is this: don't hire dumbasses who are lazy and you'll be fine on Xs and Os. Look for innovation with your coordinators (or with 1 coordinator if the HC you hire is an innovator the other side of the ball). And make damn sure that the focus is on the Jimmys and the Joes, because the team with the most talent is probably going to win the damn game.

If your head coach doesn’t value recruiting above all else, he won’t value that with his assistants. It's a lot Kwiatkowski. Has Lake been hired yet? Ready to start with this guy. We can continue the DBU moniker for sure.
Would love to know who he would consider as OC?
Scott Huff, the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator up at Washington looks intriguing?
Very likely he has some good contacts to consider, but would be nice to know who he would tell RG he could get.
I'd rather see the OC come from outside the Peterson tree-that offense looks like its taken a step back this year.
Which is exactly why Lake chose a clip in which his DB overcame poor fundamentals through shear talent. We value recruiting over pure Xs and Os because, in college football, talent overcomes scheme more often than it does the other way around. For example, I’d argue udub has better coaches than auburn does. Yet, auburn found a way to beat udub earlier this season. In reality, the auburn win over udub was really about the talent mismatch.
I want a coach who can mentor and develop assistants as top recruiters where he’s the closer for major players. You can’t teach lockdown recruiting unless you’ve been a lockdown recruiter. This allows for the HC to also work on more advanced schematic stuff done by the team/coaches in preparation for games.

He knows his audience.
Video, not a penalty.I don’t understand the first sentence... a clip?

CitizenKane?Oh. Okay. I didn’t understand the reference.
How lethal would a lake HC, Antonio pierce DC combo be on the trail?
I mean he obviously needs a big time OC but I think he can handle a first time DC. There is way more talent on defense than when embree took over and pierce and lake would dominate Southern California on the recruiting trail.Hell no. Did we not learn from the Embree fiasco? You don't hire a guy like Lake and give him a DC who has never done it. If Jimmy Lake is the new HC, he needs to surround himself with experience at his coordinator spots-like Justin Wilcox did at Cal.

Dude, Cals offense has been god awful so it’s an overreaction to say that really helped. I just said he needs to bring in a big time OC but he should be able to work with and develop a first time DC if that guy is an elite recruiter.Yeah I think following what Cal did with Wilcox makes more sense here-even more so with a guy with one year of coordinator experience.
Exactly, so bring in a big name like Pierce and they would wreck it.I would fully expect Lake to be the defacto DC and call the defensive plays if hired as HC. He doesn’t have the resume or credibility to be the CEO type of HC and simply mentor an even more inexperienced DC than him.

Agreed. Get guys who would recruit like madmen cause Lake knows his **** on D, then get guys who would recruit like madmen AND are experienced/know their **** on offense.Exactly, so bring in a big name like Pierce and they would wreck it.
I'm just thinking that if you're choosing between Lake and Hologrsen, there's no bad choice. Both will/would be huge upgradesWatching these two games, I'm still taking Lake if I'm RG. He's more likely anyway.
