JUCO QB

Does Zach Allen have two years of eligibility left? He has only been at TCU for three years, it would seem so. I don't know what it could hurt given the fact everybody behind Sefo is RSFr. or younger.

Redshirted in 2013. Played in every game both in 2014 and 2015, mostly as a Holder.

So if he is graduating, he should be a 2 to play 2 guy.

I'd be cool with putting him on scholarship as the Holder this year and let him battle it out with Montez next spring to see who starts at QB in 2017. That would actually be a great solution to things.

Frankly, probably a better depth chart management thing than Webb now that we're hearing that Sefo is healthy. With Webb, we were looking at having 4 senior scholarship QBs (Sefo, Webb, Gehrke, Awini) with the only other guys being a RS-Frosh (Montez) and a true frosh (Noyer). That gap is the big thing that needs to get fixed.

I would be fine having another arm that has college talent in here with 2 years to play to help that gap as well. This is best case scenario. That or we get what we got out of Gehrke, an arm with very little Pac 12 talent. Buffs are desperate at QB. A 100% healthy Sefo is not a foregone conclusion.

Yeah, he didn't get snaps at QB and 3 guys did. He caught 1 pass for 8 yards.
He might start here at WR though.

moved to WR a year ago, played all of 2015 as a WR. never did much as a backup before that. Interesting.
According to 247 he still got reps at QB. My impression was he just couldn't cut it against their other QBs and tried to help out elsewhere.

Unless he can actually play, how does it help?
@Buffnik said it best, a good PAT/FG holder is always in high demand! Can he play? I don't know, but Gehrke is not a good player and the dude had offers that said he could play and his tape shows he isn't too bad, so maybe he just needs to be under a different staff.

We don't need a holder on scholarship for 2 years (i.e. they are not in that high of demand). For 1, as another body on the QB chart? Sure - given it's going unused at this point. But it has to be freed up for '17 unless this kid proves the TCU QB coaches wrong.

I like Awini.
I saw a LOT of him with AFA, and the kid can run, throw, catch...he's a slash-esque type player.

I actually think he'd be a good option at QB right now. He's got a lot of experience taking snaps and proved last
year he can run the ball effectively in the Pac 12. With first team reps he'd be better than Gehrke.

Awini could make it much harder for DCs to plan for us. He also could prove to be a very effective guy in short yardage and in the process keep Sefo from taking some of the hits that happen in those situations.

I think people overrate Awini as a QB. He's not an every down guy at the P5 level.

He'll play WR. And with needing to keep Sefo healthy, I can absolutely see motioning Awini behind center and Sefo outside for a short yardage situation.

Okay here's another option. Former 4-star QB Connor Mitch will grad transfer from USCe.

He struggled a bit but he's better than Gerhke..

want. With sefo being healthy, will not get.
He has 2 to play 2, I'd like to think we might be able to sell him on 2017 being wide open if Sefo is healthy and beats him out. But depends on whether he wants to go FCS and a guaranteed start or give it another try where he's given a fair chance.

Nice update on Zach Allen, sounds like he's getting genuine FBS interest. He's following Klayton Adams, CU Football, and HCMM so you have to think he's interested in us.

"I'm open to look all over the country," he said. "I'm just looking for a place that is willing to take a chance on someone."
Since the news broke Thursday that the QB who has two years of eligibility remaining, was available, Allen says his phone has been blowing up. He's already received a few FBS and FCS offers, but didn't want to name them just yet. He's also putting together a tape of his passing skills that'll be of him mostly throwing routes on air to receivers that he hopes will be ready to show college coaches by Tuesday.
"I know I don't have much of a resume, so I hope (the tape) will help sell me," Allen told FOX Sports Friday.
The 6-3, 210-pound Allen appeared in all 13 games last season for the Horned Frogs but that was as the team's holder on kicks and a back-up wide receiver. He caught one pass for eight yards. He said he switched to wideout because he's "a very competitive person, and I thought I could help the team out."

Here is my thought process in bringing either USC (realized my error) guy or TCU guy in, both were thought to be P5 players and they just couldn't adjust to their new team or played behind someone better.

Sefo may not be as ready as is hoped.
Montez looked like he needed time to develop at best
Gehrke is not good.
A grad transfer gives you another P5 level arm. A JUCO this late means he is most likely not a P5 type guy.

My hope is the staff is turning over every rock right now, even if it were for just depth purposes.

I can't believe Coach Mac didn't have a back up plan as soon as Webb started taking trips to other schools. It is gross negligence on his part if he doesn't have a backup plan. I think it is bowl game or bust for him this season. The school showed him more patience than they showed John Embree.

No doubt he did. Plus, as has happened, I'm sure they knew that there would be some QBs come on the market at the end of the semester once they had graduated after learning they aren't where they want to be on the depth chart. Not a lot the coaches could do, though, while we were at 85 scholarships committed including Webb's signed FAA.

If you can't see the difference between where the team was under Embree and now Coach Mac... Well, I am sure glad you are not Rick George!

You're an idiot. Not an Idot, that is more endearing. It's rare to get a guy in TG his situation how do you have a backup plan to great fortune?

If we don't have a backup plan then I would hope/choose to believe that they saw enough in Montez's game this spring to trust him as a backup (or starter if Sefo can't go). It's a more logical assumption than negligence.
