#25 (Coaches' poll)/ #15 (Topdrawersoccer poll) Buff SOCCER (10-2-0 overall; 2-1-0 in Pac 12 play) is definately starting off the home part of the conference season tough. After facing off against #5 UCLA a couple weeks ago at Prentup Field to start Pac play, they follow up (afer a GREAT 2 win road trip) with their next home match being against the other conference standard bearer in the #3 (Coaches' poll)./ #4 (topdrawersoccer poll) Stanford Cardinal (10-0-1, 3-0) Thursday night. They then follow up with a Sunday matinee match against the Cal Bears (5-3-3, 2-0-1), with I'm sure the Buffs looking to get back at the Bears after a tough 0-4 loss last season in a match competed in Berkeley. (Although unlike the Buffs the Bears are NOT ranked, they do come into Boulder with the better RPI (see next paragraph), and are undefeated so far in Pac play.)

In this week's official RPI report (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/soccer-women/d1/ncaa-womens-soccer-rpi), the Buffs are at #59 (improved from #63 last week), while Stanford is #4 and Cal #51 .

Thursday's match is scheduled to be shown on on the Pac 12 Networks Mountain Channel, while Sunday's is scheduled to be shown on a CU-provided stream. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

(Cubuffs.com preview not available as I type this.)

Leyba Twins Making an Impact

Hope and Faith asserting themselves on the pitch

BOULDER – It's hard not to notice Hope and Faith Leyba from the sidelines at Prentup Field this season. It could be the fact that they are mirror images of each other. It could be their style of play. It could also be their physical presence.

Whatever it is, it is hard to ignore.

The freshman twins from Phoenix, Ariz., are nearly impossible to tell apart when not in uniform. Hope dons No. 9 on gameday, while Faith sports No. 4. Outside the soccer pitch, it becomes a little more difficult with the only real identifier being a little mark on Hope's left cheek.

If you can't figure it out don't worry, the coaches still have their struggles 12 games into the season.

"Danny [Sanchez] is pretty bad," Hope explained. "I don't think he's ever gotten it right. I'll deal with getting mixed up multiple times every single day [in general]."

"You just kind of get used to it," Faith chimed in.

CU head coach Danny Sanchez also knows he's guilty of the confusion.

"I can't [tell them apart]," Sanchez joked. "When they are really close in front of me I can, but if they're 20 yards away I have no chance. Hopefully, one is standing in the back and one is standing in front. If they are in a small group I just kind of say the last name and see who gets closer so I can identify them."
...

Inserting Hope and Faith into the starting XI from day one wasn't necessarily the plan, but it was a decision that the twins made simple when the time came.

"Some freshmen come in ready to go physically, mentally and emotionally" Sanchez explained. "Some take time and there's no perfect formula to figure that out. I think from the day we started practice you could see how completive they were and how passionate they were about doing whatever they could to help the team win. Obviously, they're very good soccer players on top of it. When you throw that all together it was a pretty easy decision for the coaching staff."

And how about that twin telepathy?

They have that working for them too.

"We do have a connection," Hope confirmed. "I know what she's thinking. If something funny happens, we have the same sense of humor. I know she's going to laugh. I can just look at her and we'll start laughing."

"On the field, I know what run she's going to make," Faith said, bringing the conversation back to soccer. "I know which ball to play."

"She knows where I'm going to go. We can connect easily," Hope confirmed.

Hope and Faith and the rest of the 25th-ranked Buffaloes will take on No. 3 Stanford on Thursday night at Prentup Field (7 p.m. MT). Thursday is Mental Health Awareness Night and fans can claim a Chip bobblehead after the match.

Thad Anderson will have the call on the Pac-12 Network.

Match day.

with CU 0-13-1 all-time vs. SU, hope they pull the big upset and get that 1st win ever over the Trees!

And SU goes up 1-2 with about a half minute left in the 1st half with a blast after a Buff header happens to go right to a Tree player's foot at the top of the penalty box.

Now in the 69th minute and it's 1-3 Trees after a goal by them in the 62nd minute.

1-3 was the final.

Has to be considered an expected result, although it looks like the team worked hard for the upset. Need to recover and learn from this one and get ready for a BIG match this Sunday against the Golden Bears. (Looks like they tied the Utes 1-1 in their match tonight.)

The match with Cal has begun; it's 0 all early (in the 5th minute).

CU starters were -

Not able to watch this one, but based on stats the Buffs look to have had the majority of play, as they lead 11-1 in shots and 2-0 in shots on goal at the half. Unfortunatly, no goals so far.

Looks like the Buffs continued their strong play in the 2nd half, but end up with their 1st tie of the season after a 0-0 battle with the Golden Bears. (CU ends up with an 18-5 shot advantage and a 5-1 lead for those on goal.)

should of had a penalty shot late but did not get one. did not like the draw. Should have won that game imo

Buffs, Golden Bears Play to Scoreless Draw

CU picks up a point to close the weekend

BOULDER – No. 25 Colorado and California played to a scoreless draw to conclude the weekend at Prentup Field on Sunday.

It was the season's first draw for the Buffaloes, who sit at 10-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Pac-12. California moved to 5-3-5 on the season and 2-0-3 in conference play.

The draw brought an end to senior Shyra James' consecutive goal-scoring streak, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. James fired off a career-high eight shots on the afternoon. She had recorded a goal in the seven previous matches.

"Obviously, she's going to be the focal point of our attack," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "But we have other players that created good opportunities [today]. We were just missing that final piece today."

The Buffs controlled just about every aspect of the match on Sunday. CU outshot Cal 18-5 and held an 8-6 advantage in corner opportunities. The Buffs landed five shots on target while limiting the Golden Bears to just one shot on goal.

"I thought we came out fantastic after the result on Thursday [loss to Stanford," Sanchez noted. "I think we really continued the momentum and created a lot of shots and corners but didn't create many great opportunities."
...

Upcoming
Colorado looks to break a three-match winless streak next week in Los Angeles. The Buffs will take on No. 15 USC in the rare Saturday matchup.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez
On the second half:
"We started to press a little bit as we're trying to find that goal and we didn't quite have the composure that we needed going forward. Having said that, there's no shame in getting a draw with Cal. It's a very good team. Now all of our focus is on USC."

On playing tighter in a scoreless match: "I think it's natural to look at the clock and see that we've had a lot of opportunities. We had a lot of corner kicks. We had some dangerous free kicks. You start to press a little bit. Goals change games. We needed our goal in the first half to change the game. We just weren't able to have enough in the final third to get the goal we needed."

On getting results in Pac-12 play: "There are no easy ones in conference play, home or away. I think we left some points out there today. But we did defend well. We gave up one shot on goal to Cal, so we'll take the positives from it and just get ready for USC next week."

Notes
Colorado is winless in three matches (0-2-1) for the first time since finishing last season 0-4-2 in the last six games…Nytes recorded her sixth shutout of the season, matching CU's shutout total from 2022…Sunday was the first scoreless draw since a 0-0 2OT draw at Washington on Feb. 26, 2021…James' eight shots are tied for the 10th most in CU history.

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/boxscore.aspx?path=wsoc&id=16458

Watched both games in person. In both the team effort was better in the first half and devolved in the second half to a lot of individual efforts.

Against Stanford, the team did a good job with the high press early which resulted in the goal. They looked to be in good shape all the way until Stanford's first goal which came from a long unchallenged run by Jasmine Aikey who had a lot of time to find an open spot in the net. Once Stanford scored their second goal it was game over, The Buffs weren't working well together in the second half and it was clear no more goals were coming.

Like they did Thursday night v Stanford, CU started out well as a team and was able to earn a lot of corners a few of which they were close to converting. Going into the second half without a goal the individual efforts were okay, but they just weren't working well together in terms of passing and connecting so the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Current RPI is #57, ouch!
