BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team has a heavy task ahead of itself with a midweek trip to the Bay Area to take on Cal and No.2-ranked Stanford.

The Buffs (13-10, 5-7 Pac-12) will take on California (12-11, 4-8 Pac-12) Wednesday at 8 p.m. MT, then move on to No.2 Stanford (20-1, 12-0 Pac-12) Friday evening at 8 p.m. MT.

Naghede Abu has been on a tear for the Buffs, resulting in top-35 rankings in the nation in blocks per set and hitting percentage. The senior is 28th in the nation in blocks per set (1.34) and 35th in hitting percentage (.372). Those marks are good for third and second in the conference, respectfully.

Alexa Smith continues to lead the team on the offensive end. She is ninth in the conference in kills per set, sixth in points, sixth in attacks and sixth in total kills. She is top-85 in the nation in all of those categories, peaking at 66th in the nation in points per set.
...

The Buffs continue to rise in the national standings in blocks per set, now at 29th in the nation and second in the conference behind Stanford. CU is also top-100 in the nation in hitting percentage (69th) and kills per set (82nd). Colorado is second in the conference in total blocks as well, just two behind Stanford.

Friday's match will serve as the 1,000th match in CU's history. The Buffs have never won at Stanford or forced the Cardinal into a fifth-set. Colorado has a 7-1 record against Cal in the past few seasons.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS:
Cal came to Boulder earlier in October and scared Colorado in a five-set match. Since then they have been upsetting teams throughout the conference, including ranked teams Washington State and UCLA. The Bears defeated the Bruins in a sweep on the road. They are middle of the pack in nearly every statistical category in the national rankings, with the weakest spot being attacks per set at 194th. Their best attribute is hitting percentage, .232, in which they are 80th nationally. The Bears have hit greater than .225 in six-straight matches, including a season-best .384 against Oregon State

Preslie Anderson leads the conference with a .393 hitting percentage, while Lauren Forte is 11th in the nation in blocks per set at 1.46. Forte is also ninth in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage at .351. Mima Mirkovic leads the team with more than three kills per set, while the Bear's 6-2 system places Isabel Potter and Jade Blevins in the setter roles with 544 and 403 assists, respectfully. Mirkovic also leads the team in digs at more than three per set, while Forte has 89 blocks to lead the team.

SCOUT THE CARDINALS:
When Stanford came to Boulder earlier this month Colorado had one of its best hitting performances and lost by way of a sweep in just seven combined points. The Cardinals have only played in a single five-set match this season, the loss to eventual No.1 BYU. Since coming to Boulder the Cardinals have swept both sets of nationally-ranked Washington teams and southern California teams. Stanford has only let up four sets in conference this season, two of which came against the Oregon schools two weeks ago. Stanford leads the nation in blocks per set at 3.22 and is second in the nation in assists per set (14.20) and hitting percentage (.311). The Cardinals are third in the nation in kills per set at 15.20.

Setter Jenna Gray may be the best setter in the nation as she is ranked second in the nation in assists per set with 12.56. She is joined by the national-leader in blocks per set in Tami Alade at 1.67, while Kathryn Plummer is seventh in the nation in kills per set (4.87) and sixth in points per set (5.53).

Match is on Pac-12 Network so I get to watch this one on television after watching the B1G match.

Buffs had a 4 point lead at one point but gave up a little scoring run - still VERY close at 14-15 bears at the 1st set media timeout.

By the way, Buffs playing a 5-1 with Ewert setting all rotations so far.

Also, great to see Carta-Samuels able to play tonight.

Buffs win (on a successful challenge at set point) the 2nd set 25-18. (Interesting using a 2nd challenge with that big a lead.)

Note- re the 5-1 tonight, announcers say Brynna Deluzio is back in Boulder with an injury. Best wishes to her.

Buffs have been down 3-4 points a lot of the 3rd set, but have it down to one point (14-15) at the media timeout.

bear timeout as the Buffs take maybe their 1st lead of the set 21-20 after the Cal setter is called for their 2nd or 3rd double contact of the set.

I was nervous about this one- great to take it against an improving, lately ranked team-beating Bear team in their house; bonus that it was a 3 setter so as to have as much left as possible when facing the #2 trees on Friday.

Fun game to watch. Buffs looked very good all around with some big play from young players. Smith and Abu were great (as usual).

Nicely played match. Congrats to Alexa and Jenna, as well as all the Buffs.

Get well soon, Jenna!

I don't think I have ever seen 2 sets in one match won by a challenge.

Article on last night's win-

"
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team put down a commanding sweep (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) on Halloween night in Berkley, California, Wednesday night with senior Alexa Smith tying the school record for errorless attacks in a match with 33.

The record performance was nearly ended as Smith had 32 flawless swings and swung into a block that ricocheted out of bounds and gave CU match-point. The Cal coach challenged the line-hoovering play, temporarily pausing the record with the possibility of an error on swing number 33. After confirmation from the down ref, Smith joined Rachel Wacholder and Kristin Engelking as the only Buffs to accomplish the feat, first done by Washolder in 1996 and last done by Engelking on the last regular season match in 1999.

Smith's performance wasn't just a bunch of swings that didn't get blocked or go out of bounds, she also had her second-highest hitting percentage of the season with a .394 mark and 13 kills. This is the first time this season she has had consecutive hitting performances greater than .300, with the last time such an occasion occurred being the end of last season before entering the NCAA tournament.

"Anytime you can hit over .300 on the road in the Pac-12 you are doing a lot of things right," said Head Coach Jesse Mahoney. "To have Lex take over 30 swings without an error is pretty impressive. I felt like we were low error in general tonight, and so when you are not giving points away it makes it harder on the other team. Really efficient tonight, I thought our block was really good at times as well."
...

With the win the Buffs improve to 14-10 overall with a 6-7 record in conference play. Cal returns to an even 12-12 overall and a 4-9 record in the Pac-12. Colorado will look to keep momentum moving with a pair of consecutive wins in conference as they head West across the San Francisco Bay to take on the No.2 team in the nation in Stanford Friday evening at 8 p.m. MT.

Buffs were tied pretty late at 18, but trees get next 3. Timeout Buffs down 18-21.

Buffs hold on for quite awhile but then give up a late serving run by stanford's setter. Down 0-1 sets by a 19-25 score.

Edit-

Bufffs take a timeout down 25-26. (Buffs of course have to serve tough to compete with the best team in the country, but had 3 straight service errors late which had to hurt.)
