Buff SOCCER (3-1-0) continues a long homestand to open the 2023 season as they host 2 fellow P5 schools. 1st off is another Thursday evening tilt with the North Carolina State Wolf Pack (1-0-2), followed up with a face off against the Purdue Boilermakers (2-2-0) in a Sunday noon matinee.

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #69 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while N.C. State was #36 and Purdue #186.

Thursday's match is scheduled to be shown on a CU-provided stream, while Sunday's is scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Networks. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

Around 20 minutes into tonight's soccer match, the Buffs lead 1-0 on a James goal (assist to Gonzalez off her corner kick).

Starters were -

Highlight of the lone goal so far -

Bummer as NC State ties it up on the 87th minute, also with a goal off a corner.

The epitome of a NON- bummer - James scores from Gonzalez on ANOTHER goal off a corner with less than a minute to go that gives the Buffs the lead back!!!

physical play in this one. interesting last 2 minutes. NC State ties it up, NC State gaol keeper who had been playing lights out all night gets injured in the 88th minute. CU scores on the replacement in the 89th minute. Interesting end. It will be interesting if there is any controversy over the gaolie getting hurt

Not sure NC State's could have saved Shyra's header for the winning goal. It was unfortunate that their starting keeper, Maria Echezarreta was injured, but it was just one of those things that happens.

watched some of the CSU game. Shout out to CU for getting Prenep ready to play soccer. Here is what CSU played on today as their field is not readycsu crap.jpg

BOULDER—Shyra James headed in a pair of goals for Colorado, helping upend NC State 2-1 in the closing seconds at Prentup Field on Thursday night.

The Buffs got on the board early in the 6th minute and that goal held true until NC State found the net in the 87th minute.

The winner by James came at 89:22 on the clock and just three minutes after the Pack tied the game. The goal marks a new school record for the latest game-winning goal in regulation. James also moved into fifth all-time on CU's career-points list jumping ahead of Melissa Cartmell with 62 points (29 G, 4 A).

"It was a very good start [to the night]," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "It was a good serve from Amaya and a great finish by Shyra. NC State is a very good team. That is an NCAA Tournament team. You can see their quality. I thought we conceded some possession but we defended really well. Allowing the late equalizer was disappointing, but to be fair, it was coming. On the flip side, what a great response from the Buffs. We got the ball forward and created a couple chances. To get the late-winner—I couldn't be prouder of the resiliency."

Senior Amaya Gonzalez picked up both assists on the goals, serving up the corner kicks. She now has three assists on the season, all coming off corner serves.

Sophomore Jordan Nytes was three minutes shy of recording what would have been her fourth shutout of the season. She made three saves in the second half alone, finishing with four on the night.
...

Gonzalez found James in the middle of the pack this the second time around and redirected a header back across the goal to the far post to seal off the night in the 90th minute.

"The second one [goal] I felt like there was a connection," James explained. "I felt like she [Gonzalez] knew to look for me. She knew that I wanted it so she just kicked it right at me."

Upcoming
The Buffs closeout the current six-game homestand on Sunday, hosting Purdue (Noon).

Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On in-game adjustments:
"We made some adjustments and we told ourselves we're going to push to try and get the game-winner. We've learned in the last couple of years that draws don't necessarily help you. We felt that we needed to push so we made some attacking subs after they got the equalizer and fortunately for us, we were able to create a chance and Shyra was in the right place at the right time."

On RPI games: "We knew we had to get results in non-conference and we've done well these last two games. We need to get a result on Sunday as well. Purdue is a very good team. They had a tough match with USC today. Watching that game, the scoreline doesn't indicate how the game really was. We'll rest. We'll recover. We'll train. Then we'll get after Purdue on Sunday."

On the fans: "Last Sunday was a great turnout by Buff Nation. Hopefully, we get some momentum off of football at TCU on Saturday and looking forward to having another big crowd out here on Sunday."

Notes
James' goals were No. 28 and 29 of her career…She now sits just one goal behind Fran Munnelly for fourth all-time in goals at CU…The Buffs have now scored four of their nine goals this season off of corner kicks…CU's two goals conceded this season have also been off corner kicks…Colorado is now 15-16-2 against Power 5 schools in non-conference play since 2012…James is the first Buff to score two goals in a game since both she and Emerson Layne scored two apiece against Texas A&M Commerce (Sept. 1, 2022)…Gonzalez is the first Buff to have two assists in a game since Rachel Rosen had two vs. Omaha (Sept. 4, 2022).

The ncsu goalie had some ridiculous saves in those highlights. Hats off to her since that could have easily been a buff blowout.
yeah, she was nails. Priest could of had 2 goals along with Shyra and Clark could of had goals but she kept them in the game

BOULDER—Colorado soccer caps off its season-opening six-game homestand when Purdue visits Prentup Field on Sunday (Noon).

The Buffaloes have gotten off to a 4-1-0 start to the season and have won three consecutive matches, following the team's 1-0 loss to Marquette to close the opening weekend. Two of the last three wins have come against Power 5 opponents in No. 14 Michigan State and NC State.

Sunday offers up a chance for the Buffs to go 3-0 against Power 5 opponents in the non-conference season. The last time CU beat three Power 5 schools in non-conference play was back in 2018 with wins over Missouri, Iowa State and Michigan State.

Senior Shyra James has helped lead the Buffs early on this season. She scored a brace against NC State and leads the team with four goals this season. She's flying up the CU record books, moving into fifth in goals scored (29) and fifth in points (62). James also moved into a tie with Taylor Kornieck for second in career goals per game (0.48).

The Buffs have outscored opponents 9-2 through five games this season, in large part due to the team's proficiency in set pieces. Colorado has scored four goals off corner kicks this season. Amaya Gonzalez has helped the efficiency by handing out three assists, including two against NC State, on her serves. Colorado's two goals against have also come on opponent corner chances.

Purdue (2-3-0) is coming off a 4-0 loss at No. 19 USC on Thursday. The Boilermakers lead the all-time series, 3-0-0, over the Buffs. Tessa Barton got the first goal of the match in West Lafayette in the last meeting in 2021, but Purdue scored three unanswered in the 3-1 loss.

CU football alum Justin Adams will have the call for the Pac-12 Network on Sunday.

Fans are encouraged to bring shelf-safe food and toys for donation. The donations will benefit the PorchLight Family Justice Center. Fans who donate will receive discounted tickets to a future CU soccer game.

Buffs and NC State both created chances by getting pasta high defensive line. Both sides couldn't convert. For CU it was earlier in the match with freshman Hope Leyba. In the second half State was able to do so a couple times.

With both sides unable to score from the run of play it was headers off corners that was the method of scoring for both. For the Buffs it Shyra James off service from Amaya Gonzalez. And kudos to the Buffs as a team for bot hanging their heads after conceding the tying goal in the 87th minute to score the winner in the 90th.

Highlight of the 3rd goal, as frosh forward Hope Leyba gets her 1st of the year, and joins her twin sister as goal scorers this match. (Beautiful work by fellow frosh Priest to get into open space from where she fed Leyba a pass that left the later with a wide open net in which to hit her strike.)

BOULDER- The Colorado Buffaloes Soccer team closed out its seasoning opening six-game homestand with a 3-0 win over Purdue at Prentup Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Buffs (5-1-0) got on the board early in the 24th minute off of the right foot of fifth-year senior Amaya Gonzalez to give her first goal of the season. Freshman Faith Leyba extended the lead off of a corner kick, notching her second goal of the season. Her sister, Hope Leyba, notched her first career tally late in the contest to help put the game out of reach.

"I thought it was a very good performance," head coach Danny Sanchez believed. "Sometimes when you come off an emotional win like we did Thursday against NC State there's a letdown, but I didn't see one today. I thought we controlled the tempo throughout the game and scored some really good goals, all three goals were really good. We defended really well as a team collectively and really limited Purdue's opportunities. It's a great win for the Buffs."

Sophomore Jordan Nytes picked up her fourth shutout of the season. She made two saves in the first half to keep the Boilermakers off the board, finishing with three saves on the day.

The Buffs hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday, taking on the preseason favorite in the Mountain West, New Mexico.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On the opening goal:
"It was a great cross from Ally Clark and the keeper punched it out. Sometimes you get in those spots and you panic, Amaya had great composure to settle it and smack it in the upper 90. A great goal from her, but her performance throughout the match was excellent."

On maintaining the lead: "We talked a lot about finding a third goal. Purdue is a very good team that is coached very well and if they get it 2-1, then now we're panicking and it becomes more than it needs to be. I thought getting that third goal really killed the match off which was key to us being able to settle down."

On going on the road for the first time: "We're excited, New Mexico is the preseason pick to win the Mountain West. They're a very good team and they have a great home crowd. I'm very experienced with going there from my Wyoming days. It's a tough place to go and get a result. We're going to have to be at the top of our game on Thursday."

Notes
Colorado moves to 1-3-0 all-time against Purdue…The Buffs improved to 3-0-0 against Power 5 schools this season, matching its best non-conference record against P5 since 2018…CU has now scored five of its 12 goals this season off of corner kicks…Gonzalez recorded her first career goal and assist game…It was her fourth assist of the season and seventh of her career…Gonzalez's goal was the second of her career and first since Sept. 19, 2021, at Denver…Hope and Faith Leyba became the first sisters to score in the same game in program history.

Buffs were fairly dominant v Purdue. The Boilermakers weren't able to create many chances and CU while CU got a couple of non set piece goals with Amaya Gonzalez getting the golazo volley and then late in the match Ava Priest was able to get to the dibble to the end line then hit a diagonal ball back away from goal that found a Hope Leyba open for an easy finish.
