SOCCER (5-1), 4 weeks into its season, finally has its 1st road test of the season as they head to Albuquerque to play the undefeated New Mexico Lobos (UNM, 2-0-2) Thursday night, then returns home to face the Colgate Raiders (1-4-1).

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #69 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while UNM was #149 and Colgate #299 .

The road match vs. UNM looks to be viewable on a Mountain West Conference stream, while the home match is scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Networks. (More detail and links provided near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

ALBUQUERQUE—The 5-1-0 Colorado Buffaloes hit the road this week for the first time in 2023. The team will make the short trip down to New Mexico to take on the Lobos on Thursday night (7:30 p.m. MT).

Colorado has won four consecutive matches since dropping a tight contest to Marquette on opening weekend. It marks the Buffs' longest winning streak since starting the 2019 season with six straight wins.

One of the keys to CU's early-season success has been the team's ability to find the net. The Buffs are averaging 2.0 goals per game on 8.0 shots on goal per game through six games this season. Colorado has had 10 players contribute at least one point this season, compared to 16 players all last season.

Now it's time to get it done away from Prentup Field

"I think going to a place where there's a very good support and a great atmosphere energizes both teams," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "Everyone wants to play in a good atmosphere and we're going to have a good atmosphere on Thursday. We will have to match the intensity of New Mexico and play our best soccer to get a result."

The Buffs haven't ventured south on I-25 in quite some. The last time CU visited UNM was in the 2003 season. Colorado is 2-0-1 all-time against the Lobos with the last meeting resulting in a 4-0 win in Boulder in 2015.

New Mexico (2-0-2) started the season with back-to-back draws against Texas Tech and Northern Arizona. They have since picked up wins over Cal State Fullerton and San Diego.

"They are a very good team," Sanchez added. "They compete every year for a Mountain West championship and an NCAA Tournament bid. They are especially difficult at home. They are unbeaten at home in their last 10 matches, which is probably close to one of the longest streaks in the country. It's a huge challenge for us on Thursday."

The friendly confines of Prentup Field have been good to the Buffs early on, but a change in scenery for the Buffs could be coming at the right time.

"It's going to be a different start to the game, but we're ready," fifth-year senior Amaya Gonzalez said after Sunday's win.

Thursday's match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network and CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc.

And, congrats to #ForeverBuff Ms. Sharts. Keep it up!

On a long ball, James maneuvers around a defender and puts the Buffs up 2-0 in the 59th minute (assist to McGuire.) as she slides it past the charging goalie!

(Hopefully not too major, but the Buffs lost valuable defender Dawn Maranda a few minutes earlier as she had to be helped off the field after what looked like an ankle injury.)

nice game. Is Babcock Chi hurt. Did not see that she played. The announcers did a good job. Not the best game but got the job done. More and More impressed with Eva Priest

ALBUQUERQUE— Colorado extended its win streak to five in its first road test of the season on Thursday night. The Buffaloes went down to New Mexico and snapped the Lobos' 10-game home-unbeaten streak with a 2-0 result.

The win for Colorado was its first on the road since beating Arizona 1-0 in Tucson on Oct. 31, 2021.

Freshman Ava Priest opened her account on Thursday, scoring her first goal as a Buffs. Shyra James, no stranger to scoring goals, picked up her 30th career tally and provided a bit of insurance for Colorado in the second half.

"It was a great start for us tonight," head coach Danny Sanchez explained after the win. "We got that early goal from Ava, but sometimes you score early and relax. I thought that after we got the goal we didn't push for the second goal. New Mexico had such a long streak [at home]. They're a tough team to break down. We started the second half a bit slow, but got a great finish from Shyra that really kind of took the pressure off."

The Buffaloes continued to look for chances offensively on the night. CU recorded its second-highest shot total of the season, getting off 23 shots on the night. The Buffs landed 11 shots on target and held UNM to just four shots on goal.

Sophomore Jordan Nytes made four saves, all in the first half, to record her fifth shutout of the season.

Colorado returns home for its Alumni Day against Colgate at Noon. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On finishing the weekend at home:
"It's an early wake-up call tomorrow and we'll be home in time to go to class, which is good. It's not a lot of recovery time and there's not a lot of prep time for Colgate. We need to be professional in our approach and how we carry ourselves over the next 48 hours."

Notes
CU improved to 3-0-1 all-time against New Mexico…James tied Fran Munnelly for fourth all-time on CU's scoring list…She is just the fifth player in CU history to reach 30 career goals…Colorado has now scored six of its 13 goals off of set pieces…The Buffs are now 4-0-0 in night matches this season…CU's five-game winning streak is its longest since starting 6-0-0 in 2019…Seven different players have scored a goal this season, compared to 10 players all last

BOULDER— The Colorado Buffaloes bring its five-game winning streak back to Prentup Field, hosting Colgate for the first time on Sunday (Noon).

The Buffs' five-game winning streak is its longest since starting 6-0-0 in 2019. The win at New Mexico on Thursday night marked CU's first road win since a 1-0 victory at Arizona in the second to last game of the 2021 season.

Colorado (6-1-0) added two more goals to its season total at New Mexico on Thursday night. The Buffs' scoring output is tied for second with Washington in the Pac-12 through seven games this season. Ava Priest became the eighth different player to score for CU this season. In comparison, Colorado had 10 different goal scorers all last season.

CU has continued to push offensively in 2023, leading the Pac-12 with 127 shots. The team's 59 shots on goal also top the conference. Conversely, Jordan Nytes has been stellar in net for CU, totaling a Pac-12-leading five shutouts in seven games. Nytes, a transfer from Oklahoma State, had six shutouts all last season for the Cowgirls.

Colgate (1-5-1) conceded six goals to Denver on Thursday night. The Raiders have been outscored 14-5 this season, giving up 2.0 goals per game. Colgate opened the season with a 4-0 win at Canisius but has gone winless in its last six games.

Sunday's game will be called by former Buff football player Justin Adams on the Pac-12 Network.

The match the team's Grandparents Day. Fans who are 65+ are free.

The match with Colgate is approximately 18 minutes in, and there's no score (although the Buffs are leading 5-0 in shots taken and 2-0 on shots on goal).

Starters were -

A beautiful pass in and James is able to get some space away from any defender and she heads it in for her 6th goal of the season as the Buffs take a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.

1-0 is the halftime score. Colgate has 0 shots showing for the 1st, vs. 11 overall and 3 on goal for the Buffs.)

Highlight of the goal (Note - per the announcer, Ms. James now has solo possession in the stat of most career Buff goals, breaking a tie with Munnelly (spelling?).) -

I am NOT in ANY WAY a soccer expert, but what looked to me a VERY SOFT / WEAK / HORRIBLE foul call in the box on the Buffs leads to a Raider penalty kick, and they get the goal to tie the match up in the 55th minute.

Then, a few minutes later (as I was writing the above), Hayward with a BEAUTIFUL settle and volley shot from just outside the box gives the lead back to the Buffs, 2-1, in the 57th minute.

Buffs get the W 2-1. (After DU earned a 6-0 win over the Raiders on Thursday,, and Colgate had a player sent off after her 2nd yellow with around 25-30 minutes left (on what looked like a harsh card to me), don't know how happy the CU coaches will be with only scoring 2, but a win is a win.)

Way to go Buffs!

BOULDER — Colorado pushed its win streak to six matches in its return to Prentup Field on Sunday. The Buffaloes used a Juliauna Hayward goal to break a second-half tie on their way to a 2-1 triumph over Colgate.

The Buff statistically dominated the Raiders on Sunday. CU outshot Colgate 21-2 on the afternoon, with both of Colgate's shots coming in the second half. Sunday was the fourth match of the season that saw the Buffs launch off 20 or more shots. Just five of CU's 21 shots were on target.

The match was much tighter than the stat sheet would indicate. The Buffs hit three shots off the frame of the net, including two in the first half that could have given CU a commanding 3-0 lead at the break. Instead, Shyra James had the lone goal in the first 45 minutes and Colgate got back to even on a second-half penalty kick conversion.

"Give credit to Colgate after a tough result on Thursday," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "They could have come in here and mailed it in, but I thought they really competed and made things difficult for us. Having said that, we just were not efficient enough in the final third. We didn't get enough chances on goal for the amount of shots we had."

The Buffaloes trotted out a vastly different starting lineup that featured four true freshmen in the starting XI for the first time since 2020. Grace Thao made her first career start, joining Ava Priest, Faith Leyba and Hope Leyba.

"I told the team after the game that if you're going to learn a lesson, learn the lesson when you win the game," Sanchez continued. "We won the game. That's what matters. Now we look forward to Denver next week."

Jordan Nytes was not credited with a save for the first time this season. The lone goal conceded by the Buffs came off a penalty kick and proved to be the only shot on net for the Raiders on the afternoon.

Upcoming
Colorado will have an extra day of rest this week with the team's next game scheduled for Friday at Denver.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On responding after the Colgate goal:
"We shouldn't have to have wake-up calls, but that was a wake-up call. The goal came from a lot of pressure and was a class finish. Juliauna has been close and we really needed it today. That was the difference in the game. We had some chances to take care of the game after that and we didn't. At the end of the day, we gave up one shot on goal and that was on a penalty kick. Now we refocus and get ready for Denver."

On the extra rest: "Hopefully we get some players back to fitness. But having a single-game weekend, you can really focus on one opponent just like Denver is. It will be a big match. They'll have a packed stadium next Friday night so we really have to perform better than we did today."

Juliauna Hayward
On Colorado's overall play:
It's hard going from Thursday under the lights [at New Mexico] to coming home for a Sunday afternoon match. But it was a cloudy day and that was nice because we've been used to playing when it's been super-hot these past few Sundays. I think our lack of focus showed and it wasn't our best game. At the end of the day, we got the win and we're just moving forward."

On playing Denver: "I'm looking forward to the rivalry. We know that Denver is a good team. We know that they want to come into this game and give it all they've got. We're going to come out as a better team [than today] right off the bat. We're not going to wait 10, or 20 minutes to get into the game. It's got to be right from the start."

Notes
CU's six-game winning streak matches its longest since starting the 2019 season 6-0-0…Hayward became CU's ninth different goal scorer of the season…James' goal was the 31st of her career, moving her into sole possession of fourth on the Buffs' all-time scoring list…Rosen's assist was her first of the season…she became the 12th different player to record a point this season.
