VOLLEYBALL (2-1) has a couple 1sts for the season starting Friday as they (1) begin their 1st overnight road trip of the year (they visited Greeley last week in their only other road match so far this season) and (2) are going up against their 1st (of MANY once conference starts) match against a ranked opponent as they head off to Wichita to compete at the "Shocker Volleyball Classic". 1st off is a Friday afternoon battle with the #22 ranked Kansas Jayhawks (KU, 4-1), and then host Wichita State (WSU, 3-2) is scheduled to face-off against CU Saturday evening. (The KU-WSU match is scheduled to kick the tourney off on Thursday beginning at 6:00 PM MT. I believe this was originally going to be the more normal 4 team tourney, but the Shockers couldn't find an appropriate 4th school to attend and compete.)

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #44 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while KU was #28 and WSU #60 .

As of now, it looks like no stream is planned for the CU-KU match, while Saturday's against WSU is scheduled to be viewable for those who have an ESPN+ subscription. (More info and links provided near the end of this post. Feeling so bummed as a CU fan that the CU-KU match is NOT going to be streamed is why I am (empathetically) happy that CU DID begin to stream all tourney matches, not just those including the Buffs, at their home tourneys this season.)

Go Buffs!!!

(As I type this, no cubuffs.com preview is available.)

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (5-1) will hit the road for just the second time this season, traveling to Kansas for the Wichita Invitational.

CU is coming off back-to-back tournament wins at home, and have won five straight matches via sweeps since dropping their season-opener to UNLV. The last time Colorado has swept five matches in a row, was 30 years ago during the 1993 campaign.

The Buffs will play on Friday at 2:00 p.m. MT against Kansas, followed up with another match Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. MT against the tournament host, Wichita State.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW

KANSAS

KU is currently 3-1 on the season, with wins over Omaha, Pepperdine, and Marquette while dropping their only match to Purdue this last weekend. They will square off against Wichita St. Thursday night before their match against the Buffs.

Colorado is 35-15 all-time against the Jayhawks, but dropped their last matchup all the way back in the 2010 season. The Buffs once had a 26-game win streak against KU from the 1987-1999 season, and will look to recapture that success once again this upcoming weekend.

WICHITA STATE

The Shockers are 3-2 through five contests this season, and have proved victorious over Houston Christian, Illinois and Illinois State. They fell short in matches against Notre Dame and Texas Tech during the Under Armour Challenge.

There is just one matchup all-time between Wichita State and Colorado, dating back to 1986 when the Shockers swept the Buffs in three sets.

Buffs going to need to bounce back after this one as KU completes a 1-3 win after a 20-25 4th set.

Too many service and serve-receive errors. KU took advantage. I wish our hitters would get subbed out of the back row positions more often. Oh well, move on and get better. On to the Shockers. Go Buffs!

The match has begun, and it's 5-4 CU early.

Edit - Looks like it was the normal Buff starting lineup, namely -

A 7 point scoring run (with Torstenson serving for most of them) midway through the set gave the Buffs some breathing room, and although they immediately gave a 4 point scoring run up to the Shockers, the 1st set ended with both teams largely siding out effectively, which equals the Buffs getting set 1 by a 25-21 score.

The Buffs run away in the 2nd set, with their serving, blocking, hitting and passing all helping lead to a 25-11 win and a 2-0 set lead.

WICHITA, Kan. - The Colorado women's volleyball team (6-2) defeated the Wichita State Shockers (3-4) in three sets (25-21, 25-11, 25-23) in the final match of the Wichita State Invitational tonight.

The Buffs' offense had an excellent night with Maya Tabron, Skyy Howard, and Lily Dwinell leading the way. Tabron had 12 kills to hit .310 while Howard and Dwinell earned seven kills each for a .636 and .238 hitting percentage, respectively. As a team, CU achieved a .247 attack percentage while holding the Shockers to .100. Junior setter Taylor Simpson was integral to the Buffs offense with 30 assists.

On the defensive side, CU picked up 43 digs compared to Wichita State's 35 digs. Libero Morgan Riddle led the Buffs with 14 digs.

Riddle also led the team in service aces, setting a new personal career high with four. As a team, the Buffs earned nine aces.

After the match, Howard and Tabron were named to the All-Tournament team. For the weekend, Howard hit .500 with 15 kills on 26 swings and led the team in blocks with seven. Tabron picked up 22 digs and achieved a .268 hitting percentage with 28 kills on 71 attempts.

"I am proud of how we responded tonight; it was a great team effort," head coach Jesse Mahoney commented. "Wichita State is a good team and this is a tough road atmosphere to compete in. We struggled again in the serve and pass game, but we righted the ship at the end."

The Buffs return home to face Colorado State University Thursday at 7 p.m. MT in the first match of the Golden Spike.
