VOLLEYBALL (9-6 overall; 1-3 in Pac 12 play) heads back to the friendly confines of the CU Event Center this weekend to face off against the Oregon schools. 1st up is a TOUGH Friday night matchup with the #5 ranked Ducks (13-2; 3-1), followed up with a Sunday noon matinee against the OSU Beavers (5-9; 0-4),

Looks like the 1st official RPI report has been released for the 2023 season (https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/volleyball-women/d1/ncaa-womens-volleyball-rpi). In it, the Buffs are at #56, while Oregon is #4 and OSU #170.

Buffs to Host Oregon Schools

BOULDER – The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (9-6, 1-3 Pac-12) is gearing up for two home matches this weekend against No.5 Oregon (13-2, 3-1 Pac-12) and Oregon State (5-9, 0-4 Pac-12). They will play Oregon Friday night at 7 p.m. and Oregon State Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.

Colorado is currently on a three-game losing skid, dropping both matches against USC and UCLA this past weekend.

Maya Tabron led the Buffs in kills over the weekend with 17, Lexi Hadrych finished shortly behind with 16 and still holds the lead for the season with 169. Skyy Howard joined the two in the century mark for the season, and has 101 kills headed into this weekend.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW
Oregon

The Ducks are ranked No. 5 in the country with a 13-2 record. They just snapped an 8-game winning streak after losing at home to Washington State in four sets this past Sunday. It was their first conference loss so far and are now 3-1. Their top wins so far include San Diego, Ohio State, and Pittsburgh who are all ranked inside the top 25.

CU will look to take down Oregon for the first time since the 2019 season, when they won at home in three sets. The Buffs are 7-19 all-time against the Ducks and have won four of those matches inside the CU Events Center.

Oregon State
The Beavers hold a 5-9 record on the campaign but have yet to record a conference win. They've lost seven in a row and last won in the beginning of September against UC Riverside.

I hope this team can return to the Friday night upsets in Boulder. That was under Liz.

I don't know if this team even has a clue of that streak.

I don't have a lot of hope for Friday but I think they can beat Oregon Statel

rough stretch. won 1 set in the last 4 games. Sunday's match is big. CU has to find a way to get their offense going outside of Lexi and Maya. Every team is sitting on those players and making the other players beat them and they cant. Our opposites have been bad against good teams.

You have described exactly what is happening. If it doesn't change for Sunday's match, this is going to be a long season.

Not watching, but from live stats an UGLY 1st set sees OSU get the win 16-25, with the Beavers hitting an obscene .727 for the set.

(Given what OSU has done for the season (indicated by their #170 RPI), interesting if this might cause Coach Mahoney to start experimenting with the lineup a little bit more.)

(Good to see a lot more versatility from the Buffs' offense. Although it started changing Friday, the middles were able to contribute well today, combining for 19 kills against only 5 errors in 30 attempts (led by frosh Payne's 9 kills and .583 hitting %). In addition, right-side frosh Dwinnell contributed 8 kills (along with 8 block assists). Of course, not to be ignored, Hadrych was probably the offensive player of the match with 17 kills and a .404 hitting %.)

Game Recap: Volleyball | October 08, 2023 | by Lauren Cawley, Athletic Communications Office

Hadrych's Offense Led Buffs' Five-Set Win Over OSU

BOULDER - The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (10-7, 2-4 Pac-12) won in five sets (16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11) against the Oregon State Beavers (5-11, 0-6 Pac-12) here Sunday afternoon in the CU events center.

Despite losing the first set, Colorado fought hard and was able to pull themselves back up in sets two and three to secure the wins. A tough fourth set challenged the Buffs; however, they got the job done in set five and showed out when it mattered most.

The Buffs were once again led by outside hitter Lexi Hadrych in kills as she posted 18 on 33 attempts with a .424 hitting percentage.

Cayla Payne was also a leading contender in Colorado's victory, earning nine kills on 12 attempts with a .583 hitting percentage. Skyy Howard led the defensive front in blocks with a total of 11.

Ana Burilović played an important role as she racked up four aces to help the Buffs bounce back after a tough first set and clinch the win in set two.

Colorado will look to start a winning streak as they face off against the University of Washington Huskies on Oct. 13 at 8:00 p.m. MT as well as the No.4 Washington State Cougars on Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. MT.

Head Coach Jesse Mahoney

Opening Statement

"There are no bad teams in this league, and Oregon State played really well. They hit 330 for the match. That being said, we have not played a volleyball set as bad as that first set all season. And that really just comes down to me not preparing our team in the right way to play volleyball, so I will take full responsibility for that. Kudos to our team for regrouping, and in Set 2 from the middle of that set through the rest of the match I thought was perfect. Unfortunately, we gave away the first one, so we had to enter the fifth set. But we played well at the end, and I hope that we use this as a learning experience to understand some of the things we talk about day in and day out in terms of making the most of our practice opportunities. And the the knowledge that the margins on this game are really thin and when we have an opportunity to be disciplined, we need to take it. So I'm happy for the win, but we have some work to do, especially going on the road against a top 10 team (Washington St. and another top 30 team (Washington)."

Outside hitter Lexi Hadrych

On Changes Between Sets 1 & 2

"We just had to make a change because that first set was not us. And we said we have to restart our mentality. We must get the energy going because that first set does not reflect how we should play. So we just had to change our mentality about that."

On hitting over .400

"I think we got into a groove of getting good passes and good sets, and Taylor can locate us like no other. She just put it up there. I think we both did a really good job of just doing our jobs and hitting the ball."

Middle blocker Cayla Payne

On Changes Between Sets 1 & 2

"It just really was an individual game for every person in the first game. We weren't really playing together as a team. And I think, as Lexi said, a mentality change needed to happen, and it needed just to be everyone getting 1% better and doing their job, and I think we ended up doing that but still taking it to a fifth set. We didn't, you know, execute how we should have executed."

On hitting over .400

"Yeah, a big focus of mine has been hitting high hands, especially on my slides. And so with Taylor finding me and just being able to locate that set really well, it's been just easier."
