BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team hosts Arizona State Friday at 7 p.m. and No.20-ranked Arizona at noon on Sunday to close out home play for the 2018 season.
The Buffaloes are 14-11 this season with a 6-8 mark in conference play, good for eighth in the conference. Arizona has moved to a tie for fifth in the conference with a 7-7 record and an 18-8 record overall. The Sun Devils are 11th in the conference at 4-10 and have an even overall record at 13-13.
Colorado will lean on seniors Alexa Smith and Naghede Abu to carry the team down the final stretch of the season. Abu, who is third in the conference in blocks per set at 1.32, is on pace to become the school's all-time blocks leader. The senior is just 29 blocks from tying Meghan Barkman's mark of 564 total blocks. She is averaging five blocks per match with six remaining, putting her just on pace to hit the mark in the final match of the season.
Smith continues to lead Colorado with 355 kills, moving herself up to sixth in the conference. She has hit double-digit kills in 16-straight matches for Colorado and posted consecutive hitting performances of .350 or greater before facing Stanford last Friday.
As the season winds down, Colorado looks to pick up key wins as the team is on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament with an RPI ranking of 50. With 64 teams entering the tournament and 32 getting automatic qualifying bids for conference championships, Colorado looks to be in the top-32 of teams in RPI that don't have such bids. Currently CU is 34th amongst teams not leading their conference. The Buffs have four matches remaining with teams ahead of them in this criterion; Arizona, Oregon, UCLA and Utah.
Sunday's senior day will celebrate a trio of seniors in Smith, Abu and Gabby Carta-Samuels. Festivities will begin 10 minutes before the noon start time and will be live streamed starting at 11:50 a.m. Fans can get a pair of reserved tickets for $15 to either match by going to CUBuffs.com/promo and use the code SENIORWEEKEND.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS: The Buffs defeated Arizona State in four-sets on the road last month. Since then the losing streak has continued to eight-straight, including four sweeps.
Alyse Ford, who posted a career-high 29 kills against Colorado last month, leads the team with more than three kills per set. She is just ahead of teammate Ivana Jeremic, who has more kills than Ford with 271.
Colorado's blocking will be the key just like the last matchup where CU put up 13 blocks. The team can afford to let Ford take many swings as long as CU keeps returning them with blocks and play efficient volleyball like they did in Tempe.
ASU is a strong digging team, the second-best in the conference at nearly 17 per set. Colorado will have to mix up the attacks to keep the defense guessing.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: No.20 Arizona has been up-and-down in the conference schedule. The team defeated 12th-ranked Oregon on the road, then went on a four-match losing streak against ranked teams from Washington and the Southern California areas. After beating CU last month Arizona is 3-2 with loses to No.16 Oregon and Washington, but a five-set road victory against No.18 Washington State.
The conference-leader in kills comes to town in Kendra Dahlke. She is averaging more than five kills per set and has 369 kills this season with a .248 hitting percentage. She leads an Arizona team that is 12th in the nation in kill per set at 14.28.
The Wildcats are an aggressive serving team with 99 aces, but also have double that with 201 errors. If Colorado can serve receive well the team has a good chance to hold Arizona offensively to minimal damage. In the last matchup the Buffs held Arizona to just a .151 hitting percentage, but eight service errors from CU and only two from the Wildcats was the largest difference.
