Matches thread- Volleyball hosts Xavier Friday evening, in Fort Collins Sat. vs. Albany and #22 CSU

Looks like (per livestats) the normal starting lineup for the Buffs tonight. (Match just starting a little late due to the length of the prior match between Albany and Xavier.)

Also, link provided in the below CSU tweet looks like it may work better for the video stream than the one provided previously (and in the OP), although it's not active yet. (Direct link - https://player.watchstadium.com/47/index.html?asset_id=94693&player_id=47&type=liveevent )

15 all in the 1st after the Buffs started nervous (down 4-9 at one point). Buffs trying to be VERY aggressive with the serve, and already have 6 service errors. (Hopefully a few more will start falling in.)

PAINFUL set 2. Buffs had a 21-14 lead, but Rams come back behind a 6 point run behind their setter's serve, and then finish it off with at least a couple straight Ram blocks at the end of the set to win 23-25. Buffs going to need a big comeback right now. If nothing else, should be a good character test/ learning experience heading into Pac 12 play.

NIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEE- Buffs come back and win a tight set 3 25-22. Keep it going Buffs!

Rams up 2 sets to 1.

The "learning experience" the Buffs VB team needs is to learn how to win when its a close game and they are playing under pressure and need to get a kill.

Well, winning the game with a service ace does prevent the need for getting a kill. Way to close in game 3 Buffs!

And the Buffs don't let the Rams even SNIFF a comeback in set 4, as they finish it off 25-14. This one is going FIVE!

That ended up being quite fine. Confidence building match coming back from 2 sets down to win 3 straight against a ranked opponent in a tough atmosphere.

Where will the Buffs be ranked? I know Nebraska got beat by an unranked team today.

This win may be enough to get the Buffs into the Top 25 heading into Pac 12 play, but more importantly hopefully some momentum as they start off playing (as often happens in the Pac 12) 3 Top 16 ranked teams in their first 4 conference matches.

I think 7 of the ten teams ranked between 16 and 25 in the 9/11 poll all had losses to unranked teams since then. So there is lots of possibilities for movement in the bottom half of the poll.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Colorado Buffaloes rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat No. 22 Colorado State (10-2) in exciting 3-2 fashion on Saturday night at Moby Arena. Set scores were 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 15-8.

The win marks the first for the Buffs (10-1) in Moby Arena since 1995 and also put an end to CSU's head coach Tom Hilbert's perfect record at Moby Arena against instate Colorado DI programs, which now stands at 51-1. This is also the second straight win over CSU for the Buffs as they defeated the Rams in 2016 (3-1) in Boulder.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffs earned their second straight win over the Rams as they also earned a 3-1 decision in Boulder in 2016. Junior Alexa Smith led the charge for the Buffs, hammering 25 kills while hitting .310. She also turned in a great defensive performance with 15 digs.

Smith had a lot of help from her entire team, including Frankie Shebbywho tallied 16 kills and 11 digs. Senior Joslyn Hayes was a force on the right side, adding 11 kills while hitting .435 to lead the match.

At the net, senior Anna Pfefferle and freshman Brynna DeLuzio each posted four blocks. Pfefferle tallied four block assists, while DeLuzio had three block assists and one block solo. DeLuzio played a great all-around game, added 55 assists, two aces, 13 digs and four kills.

Colorado State was led by Sanja Cizmic's 16 kills. Breana Runnels added 13 kills and Jasmine Hanna tallied 11 in the effort.

...

NOTEABLE: This is CU's second straight win against Colorado State…The last time CU defeated CSU in consecutive matches was in 1994 when they met in a home and away series…The last time the Buffs visited Moby Arena also went to five sets; CSU won the final set 16-14 to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16…The Buffs are now 5-15 against CSU in Fort Collins…CSU leads the all-time series 23-13…This is the start of three straight matches against ranked opponents for the Buffs.

TEAM STATISTICS: CU out-hit CSU. The Buffs recorded a .318 hitting percentage with 72 kills and 17 errors on 173 attacks, while the Rams hit .201 with 55 kills and 23 errors on 159 attacks. CU dished out 65 assists to CSU's 52. The Buffs also had the edge in blocks, posting 9.0 to CSU's 7.0, as well as aces (9-7). Both teams recorded 70 digs.

NEXT UP: Pac-12 play starts next as the Buffs travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a match on Sept. 22 against No. 16 Utah. CU will return to Boulder to host No. 4 Stanford on Sept. 24.

Highlights-

Thrill of Victory moment-

And, again, the look forward to this coming week (Stanford visiting the Keg at high noon on Sunday) -

(With the unbalanced schedule, the Bay Area schools are the one's the Buffs only play once this year, so this is the Buff's only chance to battle the defending national champions.)

Note- Not that they mean much, but the Buffs have been shut out so far in the prior 3 weeks of Pac 12 "Players of the Week" honors. With the Buff's going 3-0 and the win over the Rams being, I believe, the "best" win by a conference member this weekend, hopefully at least one Buff will get honored this week. I'd guess Ms. Deluzio for Freshman of the Week is the most obvious one. (Of course, I say this not having looked to check out individual stats of the other Pac teams.)

I have also noticed no love for the Buffs in the Players of the Week. Hopefully Alexa Smith or Brynn DeLuzio get honored this week.
