VOLLEYBALL (8-3) opens up 2023 Pac 12 play hosting the Utah Utes (5-5) this Thursday, followed up with a Sunday matinee vs. the pre-season conference favorites and #4 ranked Stanford Cardinal (7-2).

Not that last season means much of anything anymore, but just to maybe get a ROUGH idea on the competition, CU ended up #44 in the last RPI rating in 2022, while Utah was #69 and Stanford #5 .

Both the matches are scheduled to be shown on the Pac 12 Networks. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

(Preview not yet available as I type this.)

Nice! I hoped to make it down tonight, but somehow a happy hour ended up at our house and I'm missing the match.

Buffs are up 19-13 in the 2nd after being down 3-4 points early.

To copy what I originally put in the wrong thread, the starting lineup continues to include Payne as one of the middles. The one change I noticed was Ana started in the back row taking the right-sides back row rotatations. (She tried 2 back row attacks in the 1st set, so would GUESS that's themain reason she may have gotten the start. Dwinnell is still getting the front row rotations.)

Starting lineup was

Since i also (brillisntly)had this weekend's preview in the wrong thread, wanted to paste it here.

BOULDER -- The Colorado Women's Volleyball team (8-3) is set to open up Pac-12 conference play at home this weekend. They will play Utah Thursday night in the CU Events Center at 7 p.m. MT, followed up with nationally-ranked No. 4 Stanford on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT.

The Buffs are coming off a 2-1 weekend, splitting the series with CSU and taking down Denver in four sets this past Sunday. They enter conference play with an almost identical record they had last season before their first Pac-12 matchup, suffering just one more loss in the 2023 campaign.

Lexi Hadrych is coming off an impressive performance against the Pioneers, tying a career-high in kills with 22 and currently leads the team with 133 kills through 11 matches.

CU is out-blocking their opponents at an impressive rate with 113 total blocks so far, to their opponents' total of 71, a plus 42 differential. Skyy Howard is responsible for nearly half of those blocks, currently sitting at 51 before the weekend.

OPPONENT OVERVIEW

UTAH

It's been a rollercoaster of a ride for the Utes through the first ten games, as they lost the first match of the season and then would go on to alternate between wins and losses to bring them to their current 5-5 record. Their most notable wins include UNLV and NC State. Utah has two players, Lauren Jardine and Kamryn Gibadlo, who lead the team in kills on the young season.

Colorado is night-and-day when playing Utah at home versus on the road. CU is 10-4 at home in the series but a measly 3-11 when traveling to Salt Lake City.

STANFORD
The Stanford Cardinal head into Boulder with a 7-2 record and are ranked as the No. 4 team in the country. They enter Pac-12 play after a gauntlet of a non-conference schedule, facing six ranked teams in nine matches. They recorded impressive wins over No. 2 Louisville, No. 7 Texas, No. 10 Minnesota, and No. 15 Ohio State while surrendering to No. 4 Nebraska and No. 8 Florida at home.

As far as the all-time series goes between Colorado and Stanford, the Cardinal have made it a lopsided series up to this point. Stanford is 26-1 against the Buffs, suffering their lone loss in 2015 at the CU Events Center.

And, here is the weekly player review and preview show -

Buffs can't convert on any of their 4 set winning chances while serving, while Utah converts on their 2nd. It's going 4 after a long 28-30 set.

Phew - guess nothing can be too too easy in the Pac 12.

Utah looked in control for more than half the 4th set, with their defense seemingly not letting ANYTHING hit the ground. However, the Buffs kept on fighting and slowly erased separate 5 and 6 point Ute leads and control the set late for a 25-19 4th set win and 3-1 match win.

Way to go Buffs!!!

nice match. disappointed they did not sweep. I like putting in Anna B in the back row. I think she is more consistent at passing the ball than the others. They severed her alot and she did a good job. Utah got a lot of the junk points especially in the 3rd set and then found some rhythm. Need to play better on sunday but so glad they did not go to 5 tonight

BOULDER - The Colorado women's volleyball team defeated Utah in a four set (25-15, 25-19, 28-30, 25-19) match here Thursday night to start out conference play in the win column.

The Buffaloes (9-3, 1-0 Pac-12) cruised by the Utes (5-6, 0-1 Pac-12) in the first two sets, but lost their way a bit in the final two. Despite matching its second most errors in a match this season, Colorado was able to get the job done when it mattered most down the stretch.

Maya Tabron and Lexi Hadrych were the scoring leaders for the Buffs, combining for 24 total kills. Tabron added 19 digs and four blocks as she earned her third double double in the last four matches and her fourth of the season.

Freshman Avery Bolles had a great performance serving tonight, racking up five aces. She was a huge reason why Colorado set a new season-high in service aces with 12. The previous season-high was nine which happened twice this season, once at Wichita State and once at Colorado State.

Skyy Howard led the defensive front with six blocks. She now has 57 blocks on the season which is 20 more than the next most on the team. The Colorado defense was able to force the Utes into committing 33 errors, the most errors made by a CU opponent this season.

The Buffaloes will look to keep its winning streak alive on Sunday as they face a tough test in No.4-ranked Stanford at home.

Opening Statement

"Nice win. I'm really happy with the execution that the team had in this match. At the end, I said there are not a lot of sweeps in the Pac-12. And I think that's true. I think everyone is good. And Utah got better as the match went on. I think in that third set, we felt like we had it closed out, and that's the worst way to feel sometimes. And really happy with how we responded in that fourth set and we had to claw our way back into the set and close out. So, really hard-fought match and victory that everyone and we made a couple of changes in lineup and philosophy and got a little bit more serving more point scoring from the online which I think really helped especially in the first two sets and then bringing us back, in the fourth so we'll take a day to enjoy it. And then we're on to Stanford on Sunday."

On Fourth Set
"I mean, it's a little bit of human nature, right, it's absolutely true four set-for-set victories are always win the first two and lose the third and hopefully, we can learn from that as well as we played in the start of that third set. We relaxed, and you know, frankly, I relaxed a little bit as well. And we ran out of subs and we had to work in a place to close that set out. So luckily, it didn't bite us this time. And next time we're up 2-0 hopefully, that happens again, we're up 2-0 and we'll talk about this match."

If they had continued playing in Set 3 like they played in the first two sets, they could have swept. Utah made a lot of adjustments and got their act together. I shudder to think of what a 5th set would have looked like.

Kuehl played more and they brought her in when it got tough.

Impressed with Ana. As she learns the CU system, she is going to play a lot more.

Sunday will be tough. No way around it.

Stanford will be tough. I enjoyed watching AK celebrate after she got that clean spike on that overpass. Seemed like it was a mental thing for her and she knew she was back form her injury. Anna B has always impressed me. I think she has a whip of an arm and a very good serve. Utah served her alot and she did a great job on the pass imo. I think the combo of her and Lily and how Jesse used them give them a really good combo on the right side. Lily had some big kills in that final set as Utah was not going to let the left side beat them and really went to that after the second game. Need to learn how to finish the match.

Match day, with the opening serve less than 2 hours away!

(Edit - And bummed that this is the last time CU volleyball will ever face Stanford in a conference match. F*** ESPN, Fox, USC and UCLA.)

Much closer set (until the end) with CU getting up 4-5 points early before Stanford evened it up by the mid point. Unfortunately, SU ended up going on an ~4 point run late and go up 0-2 after a 21-25 2nd set.

Stanford gets the match after a 20-25 3rd set.

In what turned out to be a common story for Buff sports this weekend, teams are almost always ranked high for a reason - they're GOOD.

rough weekend for the buffs abasing ranked teams. CU is just a class down from those teams and while this match was close in points I never thought Stanford did not have control or wold lose. CU has a good team but not a top level team and it is a razor thin line for them to win. Still can make the NCAA, have to continue to get better and find ways to pull out some wins against some ranked teams.

Great effort by the Buffs, but they would have to play absolutely PERFECT volleyball to beat Stanford. The Cardinal are legit title contenders year in-and-out. They always have one of if not the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, and their teams typically improve throughout the season. There are a lot of games left to play, and I think CU can win a lot of them...if they can play to the best of their ability on a consistent basis, the Buffs are absolutely a tournament team. Go Buffs!

Team played well against a more talented Stanford team and did not get blown out. Yes, Stanford is already battle tested and we played some nobody teams.

I agree that we are going to beat a lot of teams in the Pac this year. Always with the caveat of injuries.
