#5 seed and #17 ranked (in both major polls LAST WEEK) Women's basketball (24-9 overall; 11-7 in conference play) aims to go at least one step farther than last year, to the Elite 8, and once again standing in the way it's the (#2 ranked right now) Iowa Hawkeyes (31-4, 15-3), the #1 seeds this year in the "Albany 2" region. The game will be at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY, with the tipoff scheduled for 1:30 PM MT.

The game is scheduled to be shown on ABC. (Further info and links for media options available near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

A couple notes:

1) Time and network are based on the below Brian Howell tweet. (Both the NCAA and ESPN brackets have game as TBA.)

2) Per an earlier tweet he made, the CU- Iowa game follows #3 seed LSU - #2 seed UCLA, which is scheduled to start at 11:00 and is also in Albany. Therefore, I wouldn't be shocked if the CU tipoff isn't later than 2:30, as my impression (no data to back it up) is that the 2nd games when there's a 2-1/2 hour scheduled gap between game starts often seem to start late.

For newer fans or fans who (like me) have crappy memories - The Buffs, as a #6 seed, fought HARD against the #2 seed Hawkeyes last year, and had a 1 point lead (40-39) at the half. After going down 11 after a tough 3rd quarter and going down 14 early in the 4th, CU got the Hawkeye lead down to 4 (74-78) with 1:49 left in the game before Iowa pulled away for a 77-87 win.
(This is all from the cubuffs' box score for the game available at https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2022-23/iowa/boxscore/16330 .)

The money machine wants to see a LSU vs. Iowa matchup. LSU shot 27 free throws and Iowa shot 30 free throws their last games. A lot of fouls that were called on W. Virginia were straight BS. We will have to overcome a more than just Iowa.

We got this if the Buffs decide to play the 4th quarter. Our defense is excellent except against the 3. If they can stop a few of the 3's Clark shoots and defend the other 4 players, we can win this game. Go Buffs!

Keep it low scoring like last nights game. We know how to grind them out. That isn't Iowa's style at all. They went to shoot and shoot and shoot some more.

I dunno. WVU decided the best way to play Iowa was to be physical. We saw it from the opening whistle. It almost worked. I didn't see the LSU game, but the Iowa FT numbers seemed to reflect the way WVU decided to play Iowa more than any biased refereeing. JMO.

I am super concerned that ESPN is super engaged in having CC in the Final Four, and perhaps last night's close call will have them making some calls to the NCAA and putting pressure to put a thumb on the scales, so to speak, but as of right now, if our kids play their game, I don't see the FT numbers being as inflated for Iowa as they were last night.

I don't care if you respect and appreciate CC's game, for the rest of week she sucks, Iowa sucks , their fans suck, and we rule. Go Buffs

All I know is that I hope LSU goes down before the Final Four. I'll be rooting for their Sweet Sixteen opponent. If they win, and we're not their competition, I'll be rooting for Iowa. Kim Mulkey and Angel Reese suck, and I hope they get herpes from an Albany toilet seat.

I could have gone much worse with Mulkey, but I wouldn't wish that on Reese. I actually feel bad wishing herpes on her. Maybe just the clap.

Mulkey can choke on a BOD's. Never had a problem with Reese.

I still don't like what she did at the end of last year's finals. A lot of people tried to excuse Reese's behavior by saying Caitlyn Clark was just as bad, but the idea that Clark is a jerk doesn't make Reese any less of one. I've still never seen anyone else celebrate a championship by seeking out an opposing player and taunting them.

ETA - being a general asshole on the court though shouldn't warrant an incurable venereal disease though. Like I said, maybe just the clap. Mulkey, on the other hand, is just the worst, and I'm really hoping this WaPo expose destroys her.

Congrats to the 4!

BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball's Jaylyn Sherrod, Frida Formann, Aaronette Vonleh and Kindyll Wetta were named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District, the association announced on Tuesday.

The 2024 Academic All-District Women's Basketball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on April 16.

Sherrod, the 2024 Women's Basketball Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leads the Buffaloes with 4.9 assists and has a career-high 12.9 points per game this season. She has started all 33 games this season, ranking second in the conference in assists per game and third in total assists (162). Sherrod has scored in double figures in 21 games this season, including a career-high 34-point performance against then-No. 12 Utah that earned her multiple national Player of the Week honors. She handed out a career-high 13 assists against UT Arlington and has had 15 games five or more assists this season. Sherrod is a three time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection and has been named AP All-America honorable mention, All-Pac-12 and All-Pac-12 Defensive Team selections this season.

Formann, an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection, leads the Pac-12 and ranks 18th in the nation in 3-point field goal % (min. 2 made per game), shooting a career-best 42.2%. She has a career-high 79 3-point field goals made this season, three shy of tying the single-season school record (82). Formann is also on the verge of setting the school record for career 3-pointers made (men & women) as she's currently tied with Blair Wilson and Bianca Smith at 257. She has twice tied the school record with seven 3s in a game this season and has twice posted a career-high 27 points. The sharpshooter from Denmark is a two time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection who has been lights-out from the free-throw line, hitting 91.3% (63-69) this season.

Vonleh, an All-Pac-12 selection this season, leads the Buffs with 14.0 points per game this season. She has scored in double figures in all but seven games this season. She started the year off with a 24-point performance against then-No. 1 LSU and has totaled six 20-point games on the year. Vonleh has shot 70% from the field or better in seven games, posting a career-best 88.9% (8-for-9) earlier this season against Boston U. She has three double-doubles this season and set the CU record for steals in a half with a career-high seven against Kansas State. The junior post player ranks fourth in the conference with a 54.6 field goal % and has a career-high 170 rebounds this season.

Wetta, an honorable mention All-Pac-12 Defensive Team selection, ranks 23rd in the nation and third in the Pac-12 with a 2.37 assist/turnover ratio. She's eighth in the conference with 1.67 steals per game and is second on the squad with 55 swipes this season. Offensively, she scored a career-high 16 points in CU's first-round tournament win over Drake. The Colorado native has seven double-digit scoring games this season and is averaging a career-high 5.9 points per game. Wetta has handed out a career-high 128 assists this season, averaging 3.9 per game. She has two starts this season and is averaging 23.6 minutes per game.

In order to be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's matches or must start in at least 66 percent of the matches. Additionally, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA).

Now that Iowa fans are trolling CU fans, bring it on. I still think our defense can beat them if they can manage to disrupt Clark.

WV stayed in the game so long because it was low scoring. Iowa wants to outscore you. That is what they do best. They are not known for defense. Netty is stronger and more talented than any post player they have. Losing Cizano from last year's team has really hurt them. Clark and Cizano had played together for so long, that it was an automatic layup if Clark passed to her down low. They don't have that this year.

Steulke is young and learning. She may be just as good by the time she is a senior, but she isn't at that level yet.

From looking at Iowa's box scores in Iowa's losses and 2OT win v. Nubs (Nubs beat them twice in the regular season), it looks like the teams that beat them used depth off the bench. CU has played a bunch of players this year. Clark gets her's, but it looks like they need a defense by committee to make her work hard all over the court. CU is a huge underdog and JR will have to pull a rabbit out of the hat, but this is why they play the games! Also, who knows how the longer lay-off will impact the teams.

I'd think she's gonna get hers, don't let the others beat you. Hard either way you look at it really. If they can play physical like West Virginia's women did, they have a good shot. She's gonna put up numbers no matter what.

Mulkey can choke on a BOD's. Never had a problem with Reese.
Heh, watching Reese play frustrates the crap out of me. She just stands around, then is bigger than everyone. Really not athletic at all IMO. Next time they are playing, just watch her, then get frustrated

Yeah, that's gonna be a issue when she plays Lauren Betts and UCLA next round. (She's 4 inches shorter than Betts)

I fear the refs may be a big problem. They will want #1 and CC to win.
We just have to be that much tougher.
The refs got called out in USA Today (sorry no link) with the question, "Can the Buffs Overcome Caitlin Clark (and the refs)" which is exactly what an earlier poster was hoping would happen. Spotlight will be on officiating.

I'm hoping there is enough focus on it, that the refs have to be fair. I doubt it though.
