***OFFICIAL 2019 CU FOOTBALL FALL CAMP THREAD***

If you’ve been closely following college football for a few decades, there is always a bit of 2nd guessing the last staff. Even more so for the strength coach...it’s like the sun sets is the west and water is wet. I do like the things we hear out of camp about HCMT and staff, though.

I will also say that while I think former HCMM has a good football mind, his tenure at CU would probably be viewed much more negatively if it weren’t for the incredibly low bar set by the prior two staffs.
MM was the right hire at the right time. We needed a turnaround specialist. If he was going to stick around here, he needed to turn it around and then take it to the next level. He wasn’t able to take the program to the next level, but he did resurrect it from the train wreck it had become under Hawkins and Embree. Hopefully for MM, he will get another shot as a HC somewhere and learn from his mistakes here. Good man, solid coach, needed to move on.

Thank God MM really turned us around

I think HCMM has earned a reputation as a head coach you can hire if your program is a dumpster fire and you're not interested in taking certain shortcuts the NCAA might not like or could result in bad press around the off-the-field incidents. But if your aspirations for your program are above what Duke is achieving under Cutcliffe, he's not your long-term answer.

Watch out for Darrion Jones. That's the weapon that no one is expecting, but he's had over a year to learn the position, a better coach now, an offense that's TE friendly, and a coaching philosophy of calling the plays that allows the guys you have to excel rather than benching guys who can't be trusted to run the entire playbook well.

He's a physical freak and they will find ways to use him to create huge matchup problems for defenses this season.

Harris, Jones, Russell and Poplawski. I am still just baffled that we just decided not to play with a TE in the receiving game the past 3 years, which essentially eliminated 1/3 of the field for opposing defenses to defend. Just blatant incompetence from Lindgren and Chev (and ultimately MM).

I wonder how much Bisharat fits into that plan.
I read one report about him being a pretty natural receiver, more than the other TEs. He's also pretty good with blitz pickup and has shown he can be an effective runner. Isn't horrible as a lead blocker.

I think there are definitely ways he will be used that will force the LBs to account for him to be more than a lead blocker -- and if they don't then he'll be wide open off play action or a mis-direction handoff. In addition to being an excellent ST player, I expect him to do some things that help us on offense by making some big plays and keeping the defense a bit more honest. 2nd string at H, though.

I remember him making a few nice catches out of the backfield. One in particular against CSU last year that went for a TD. I agree that there should be some ways to get him involved on offense that will create some mismatches for opposing defenses. I’m rooting for the kid. He’s never lived up to his recruiting hype, but I don’t think that was due to lack of effort on his part. I’d call it hindsight, but many here thought he’d be better suited at linebacker when he came here. Thing is, he’d have a hard time finding the field at ILB on this team, too.

According to a certain offensive player who was at my house yesterday, Tucker is absolutely a fanatic for everyone knowing all of their assignments and the bold above is at the top of the list of things that are not true. Unless you weren't here this spring, you better know the entire playbook well.

That’s actually kind of good to know. That’s the attention to detail that elevates the whole team.

I didn't mean "know it", which is why I didn't say that. I was talking about being good at it. MT talks a ton about fitting the system to what the players can do well. I'm expecting MT and staff to handle Jones like the Chargers did with a young Antonio Gates who came in out of college basketball and hadn't yet developed a high football IQ. There are things that Jones can do that very few TEs can -- and things that he's going to be kind of bad at.

Too bad he took too long to make a position change. Wonder how he would look at the Star position on D

Sorry - misread that. I hear he's vastly improved. I think Pupunu may be a gem in fact.

That position is complex, athletically and intellectually. Taylor struggles big time in open practice with basics like alignment, stance and assignments. Bish? No.

Dylan Thomas: I just read for the first time on his cubuffs.com bio that he missed the last 8 games last year due to injury and then missed the spring for the same injury. Wonder if he's participating? I know we sort of wrote him off, but the above might be a factor?

He was in rare form today. Voice about shot. Seems that he gets fired up when he sees that the team needs more from him to get them where they need to be on a day. They must have responded well, because he was in a good mood on a day when I'm sure he was doing a lot of yelling. Adrenaline was still up during the presser.

In short: Dog days of camp. Newness gone and 1st game still far away. Had to light a fire under them today. Said they responded, but need more leadership from the players and they will "push, push, push".

Then there's a bunch of Q&A about position groups.

I read late last week that we had a Dylan Thomas sighting with him making some plays. He was the recruiting gem of his class at WR, so it was good to hear that he isn't a bust yet, just a guy who needed to get healthy.

That’s why they call me coach.

This is a human performance business.

If we can get production from the TE, whoever is going to step in that role, it'll open up so much.
That and the running game.

If opposing safeties have to take a peak in the backfield for a run and do a check to make sure the TE isn't going to come up the seam before they can fly over to double-team Laviska... let's just say that things could get very fun.

Sounding like John Fox today. Definitely had to push his team. I agree though, he seemed to be in a good mood so hopefully that is a good sign.
