Official 2022 Cricket Celebration Bowl Thread

I think we’re all overestimating Trevor woods ability as a coverage safety. We all remember the big hits and knocking the ball loose with a perfectly timed hit. But it seems like getting beat over the top or in cover two to his side of the field is being forgotten. Things he can learn and improve on. But right now, it’s no question in my mind that Shilo is a better overall safety.

It sounds like our scheme may be similar to 2016. If so, Woods would be fantastic imo if he's in that hybrid OLB/NB role Moeller played.

For the sake of the kids and of the story it would have been great for JSU to win that game. Having Coach Prime involved probably brought more eyes to that game that they ever would have otherwise. NCCU winning shows that the HBCUs play some good football, it wasn't just Prime.

Also hope and expect him to take a lesson from this game. He had better talent at most positions but ultimately lost because NCCU flat dominated the LOS. They controlled the ball on offense running right at JSU and their defense stuffed the run and had Shedeur on the run all day when he wanted to pass.

Agree if that’s true. He would absolutely thrive in that role.

I like him as a safety if that is where this goes. His athletic ability compensates for a lot of his occasional mistakes and he is playing two ways. The big thing that jumped out at me for the elite guys we saw today— they don’t need to stay in form on every play to succeed at this level. That will be less true at the p5 level but there will still be some guys who can do it, just far fewer. we have a staff coming together that seems to clearly understand the distinction.

Also, the game is still won or lost upfront of course and that is what we saw today. It may take a bit of time for us to get elite upfront again.

I think you’re talking about JSU’s Travis Hunter (who will be transferring here). We’re talking about CU’s Trevor’s Woods because Trevor does not play both ways lol

Yes and yes. On vacation which isn’t honestly too different than not vacation but I did misread. I am good with all of it.

Shilo is probably a better safety as are a couple of the other guys reported to be likely transfers in.

Unlike most of the guys on our defense though I think that Trevor Woods is a legitimate P5 safety.

Yes he trailed some guys into the end zone, I've seen that from some very good DBs in the past.

What we don't know is how often that wasn't even supposed to be his coverage and he was trying to make up for somebody else's mistake. We do know that deep passes were available for our opponents all year because we couldn't rush the passer to save our lives so WRs had all day to finish their patterns and QBs got lonely in the pocket waiting for guys to come open. Don't care how good a DB is he can't cover the whole field and he can't cover forever.

Shilo Sanders is a better safety. Not to take away from Woods. But Shilo is better

Argument could be made that Shilo was just as much of a goat as that TE. His absolutely awful PI on NCCU's last possession in regulation extended the drive and made it to where JSU's last possession was to catch up instead of gp ahead.

Is that why Prime's entourage is always wearing those "goat" sweatshirts? Because of Shiloh?

Shilo generally pretty good in coverage and terrible at tackling. He was awful in coverage and very good in tackling against NC Central. This is the 2nd straight national championship game he stunk it up in coverage. He's a good coverage hover but terrible 1v1 defender in my eyes.

I got a chance to watch the game again this morning.

Notes:

QB: Sanders had his best game as a QB to me. I know grades will say the FAMU game was better but so much was going wrong going into the game for FAMU from an administration POV and it lead to them being disorganized. In this game, Sanders was dealing with a dirty pocket, he had to make throws under duress and make good reads. I tracked 3 bad or missed throws. 7 other incompletions were drops and throwing the ball away. I did think he took too many risks that led to some sacks and he did escape the pocket too soon at least 6 times which led to some amazing catches from the offensive player or it lead to him throwing the ball out of bounds. Overall, this was a good performance. Shows if you get him an OL, he could dominate the next level but he's not a guy you need to take over ala Cam Newton or Steve McNair style to win games. I did have a lot of issues with playcalling this game which I will talk about later.

RB: Rough outing from the RBs but it wasn't their fault. The left side of the OL got dominated in run blocking and the center and RG didn't do much better. That said, Patrick Willis had a strong game from a draft perspective and should get a lot of love from O'Boyle and Lewis as he is likely to join Colorado this upcoming week. Run blocking wasn't much better for the RBs nor was the passing game. Just a rough day.

OL: Since I am already on them, I felt they did really well when it was a 3-man or 4-man rush. All of them. But if the blitz came to the Left or up the middle, it was a terrible experience for Sanders. I really hated what I saw up the middle on the blitz. As for run blocking, everyone but Willis got dominated. Nothing else needs to be said.

WR: This wasn't a great game for the WRs but I felt they played very well. Kevin who got knocked heavy by PFF for reasons I have no clue was a stud today. Hunter who PFF said had his worst offensive game which is crazy as most JSU fans will say this was by far Travis's best game got likely killed because of the fumble and drop which he made up for literally a play later. PFF is full of ****. Anyway, Daniels played well, as usual, and always got open. Hooks was reliable but let's be clear, that was a fumble the refs missed before halftime which ended up a Sanders rushing TD. Rico Powers dropped a TD but it was a poor throw from Sanders. The best game from the WRs to me is still the FAMU game which was elite by the WRs.

TE: Stevens had the best game of his JSU career but the other TEs did not come through and man, that Hagler drop was awful. He had an excellent spot against FAMU but in the same play, he dropped it against NCCU. Tough! He's a much better player than this game showed. Tough way to finish the season for him.

Offensive Coaching: I felt the players were well-prepped so I'll give prep work an A-. Playcalling was bad for the most part, I give it a D+, and here is why. The best play JSU has out of the backfield isn't even for an RB, it's the jet sweep to Gaines that's usually 8 yards. Man, the running game was dead because the OL couldn't get any push, why were there no constant jet-sweeps to Gaines or Coleman? This is why I gave the coach a D+, the offense was so overpowered, they should have scored at least 50 against this defense but bad playcalling kept this game close. Coach Brett is a fine coach and has HC potential but he's not a play-caller. That's not his thing.

Next: Coming soon - Defense

Defense

DL: On 2nd viewing, they got dominated worse than I thought but since I knew who played and didn't play on 2nd viewing, I understood why. Nyles Gaddy and Tru Thompson are by far the two best players on the DL and are superior run-stoppers compared to the rest. Neither played due to injuries. Their rotational players are just specialists. Three of those guys have real size, Williams, Gattis, and Evans. Evans and Gattis entered the portal. Basically, Williams was the only rotation player with size that played. Against a run-heavy team with a big strong mobile for this level QB, that's a recipe for disaster and boy was it a disaster. This reminds me of Alabama-UGA in last year's title game. Injuries killed their WR core and J. Williams got hurt early in the game, so the team that dominated UGA in the SEC Title game with Metchie and Williams, was basically playing Bryce Young hero ball in the national title game. Injuries are a part of the game but if bookies knew about these injuries, I believe many would have said this game would be a toss-up instead of a 13.5 point spread for JSU.

LB: On 2nd viewing were better than I thought. They missed more tackles than previously but their coverage was pretty good and they took away a lot of EASY throws from Richard. Their run stopping was underwhelming but they had to do a lot more than what's been previously asked of them. Miller was much better on 2nd watch than I thought.

CBs: On 2nd viewing, they did get beat a couple of times. Hunter and Bolden both once. But most of the completions were kept in front of them or within the scheme. I felt they played very well.

S: Huggins had an excellent game but Shilo Sanders and Cam struggled BADLY. On 2nd viewing, Cam got put in some terrible situations thanks to the depleted DL as a box-to-box safety and his lack of size was exposed but Shilo was worse on 2nd viewing. His tackling was sound but he wasn't in the right spots. Then he was heavily picked on for both the running and passing game. Especially passing. They wanted as much 1v1 on Shilo and usually, Shilo is protected so he can hover but when the running game is killing you like it was, you get better matchups with 8 in the box and Shilo was getting picked on badly. He might have been just as exposed as the DL but the DL has a good reason, most of their personnel fits for this matchup were out. Truth is, Huggins should have got all of Sanders's PT and maybe JSU would still win regardless of DL being depleted.

Coaching: Was the defense prepped, honestly, I don't feel like they were. D-. Playcalling was D- as well. It just felt like the defense was bad and had no organization and was constantly bickering with each other. By far, JSU's worst defensive game this year and the 2nd worse of the Prime era. 1st was Alabama A&M who won the Black National Title in the Spring and dominated JSU badly but that defense had no DL talent yet and was still using the previous coach's roster. Deion cut most of those guys. This was his worst game by a mile with Deion's roster. A big part of this lost is on Prime. He shouldn't have talked trash after Evans and Gattis entered the portal saying no one who's a starter entered the portal. Well in this game, they would have been starters and would have clearly helped A LOT. Losing them also had an impact on this game so Prime gets the defensive blame for this game even more than Thurman.

Special Teams: You can't allow a trick play. That right there drops the ST grade to a C but otherwise, it was good for the most part.

I felt NC Central outcoached JSU and did whatever it took to win. JSU kept it more basic than usual and they are normally the aggressive ones. Today, that was NC Central. Prime got out-coached. Must learn from this when he goes to Colorado. I do think NC Central having a month to prep for this game is a massive advantage. If Richard had to play two weeks ago in a championship game, he would have likely had to play with a broken finger this game could have been far less effective and they could have had other injuries. JSU and the SWAC gotta change that. If the SWAC has a conference title game, so should the MEAC. It's only fair.
