1. CU is one of 16 programs that ESPN is covering live.
Kris Budden will be reporting live from Boulder, with interviews to be conducted with CU head coach Mike MacIntyre and select players, including some of Colorado's 12 early enrollees.

ESPN's extensive multi-platform coverage will span all of its networks as well as ESPN.com. The 12th annual event provides the latest news and information on college team's recruiting classes as top recruits make their official commitments. The day gets underway with an ESPNU special at 6 a.m. MST before jumping to ESPN2 at 10 a.m. The final two hours (3-5 p.m.) will then wrap up on ESPNU. Coverage will include contributions from reporters at all 16 campuses, with more than 25 interviews with head coaches and 12 on-air announcements.

Hosts Matt Schick (a Colorado graduate) and Joe Tessitore will keep fans up to date on all the news surrounding the day, led by national recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill, recruiting analyst Craig Haubert, and college football analysts Mike Bellotti, Mack Brown, Joey Galloway and David Pollack. The crew will be joined by former LSU head coach Les Miles (also a former CU assistant in the 1980s), who will contribute to coverage throughout the day as a guest analyst, sharing his insight and experiences on the recruiting process.

3. Signatures to watch
  • Nate Landman - took OV to Cal the last weekend
  • Chris Miller - took silent OV to Baylor & then another OV to Ole Miss in January
  • Carson Wells, Will Sherman, KD Nixon and others received late offers and strong pushes, but seem solid with CU
  • K'Lavon Chaisson (DE) - deciding among CU, Florida, LSU & Texas
  • Damion Daniels (NT) - deciding between CU and Nebraska
  • Josh Falo (TE) - deciding among CU, Oregon and USC
  • Emmanuel Flowers (S) - deciding among CU, Michigan State, Boise State and SDSU
  • Nick Ford (DT/OT) - deciding among CU, Cal, Utah and Washington
  • Jalen Harris (DE) - UA commit deciding among CU, Arizona, Illinois and Notre Dame
  • Terrance Lang (OT/DE) - USC verbal deciding between CU and USC
  • Jared Poplawski (TE) - ASU verbal deciding between CU and ASU
  • Casey Roddick (OG) - former Cal commit deciding among CU, Cal, SDSU and Utah
  • Surprises?

4. Pac-12 classes & CU's rank within the conference, particularly the South
It looks like USC is going to have the #1 class (nationally Top 10), with Stanford probably #2 and making a late push for Top 10 nationally. 3rd thru 7th in the conference looks like it will be some order of Oregon, UCLA, Washington, CU and Arizona. Arizona doesn't have momentum right now and could potentially fall out of this group. After that, Oregon State looks like it's in 8th but ASU and Utah could finish strong to pass them. Wazzu, currently around 9th, could slip to 11th. Cal seems destined for the lowest rated class. We'll see how it shakes out.

Meh, we'll see how it all turns out. Could be a lot of hearts breaking when kids go elsewhere...it's about winning to top recruits.

I doubt we lose Landman or Miller.
Roddick is a lock.
Poplawski looks like a pretty solid one, Lang is a little less likely.

In the past we had volunteers for each part of the country on Allbuffs updating info? Not doing that this year?

Good point. The thing is, there's so much info out there so fast that it seems like a waste to do more than compile as things come in via the CU site, twitter (Scout, Rivals, etc.), ESPN's broadcast, etc. This is actually the first year since 3 years ago I'll be online and on AB for Signing Day, but it has seemed to me that pre-creating more detailed profiles special for NSD, having people sleuthing, etc., doesn't seem as useful as it was. Heck, Adam isn't even bothering with trying to find out from each recruit what time he's faxing in because CU is now so quick with clearing compliance and getting the official announcements out to us.

One thing I think we could do that would be cool and I liked in the past would be if someone wanted to volunteer to update us on in-state players and where they sign. That's everything from RMAC to P5 signings. If someone wants to take the lead on that, would be a thread that got a lot of traffic.

Any other ideas?

That's right. don't you have a bag to pack and a plane to catch?

Nice write up. Best recruiting thus far has been done at WR, OL, DL, MLB's and QB. DB's will take some time to see how it plays out but there are some underrated guys that have ability. Holding Miller is key. Lose him and I'd be more concerned with this group especially at safety. TE remains a black hole to me as we haven't landed anybody and got little to no production last year. We could look at Sparaco or Oliver there but I think they are better DL players than TE players. Landing Falo/Poplawski would be great on this front, beating out USC/Oregon/Bama for Falo would really put us on the map. Picking up C. Roddick would be great and adding to what looks to be one of the best OL classes we've had in a decade or so. Honestly, no big loss with Newman going to Baylor then as it would be a wash. Landing Daniels, Ford, Harris, Lang would add to an already talented, deep DL class. I'd be happy as we've added 3 JC's there so another body would be good for long term development of the position. The only thing we haven't landed yet is a premium pass rush specialist. Harris / Chaisson would be in that class. Chaisson isn't considering us any longer so he's out. 3-4 does mitigate this a little bit though as it's easier to generate a pass rush that way but a guy like Harris could immediately step in at ROLB and given us some dynamic ability rushing QB's.

Finally, I do not want to lose Miller or Landman. They are two of the most underrated players we have in our class. Miller could play multiple positions at DB, returner and I wouldn't be surprised if we got him on offense some running out of the slot. Landman to me projects as a great MLB target. I know rivals and others have at DE but I think he will play MLB when it's all said and done. The guy has good size, speed and instincts. He's all over the field on his film and we could use that type of ability at MLB covering the middle of the field in the 3-4.

How I see the class shaking out at positions:

OFFENSE - 10 Commits

QB : Tyler Lytle - 3*
HB : Alex Fontenot - 3*
WR : KD Nixon - 4*, Jaylon Jackson - 3*, Laviska Shenault - 3*, Maurice Bell - 3*
TE : -----
LT : Jake Moretti - 4*
LG :
C :

NT : Javier Edwards - 3* (JC 3/2 years), Jalen Sami - 2* (Could also play DE, moves really well)
LDE : Shamar Hamilton - 3* (JC 2/2 years), Dante Sparaco - 3*

MLB : Nate Landman - 3*
MLB : Chase Newman - 3*, Carson Wells 3* (Could also play OLB/DE)

I agree on a lot, but Newman and Roddick are not a wash in any way IMO.

Agree.

On paper, Newman elevated to borderline blue chip in the final months. Roddick, otoh, is a solid 3* type.

I do think that Roddick may be more versatile, though, and might end up being a better fit with the current roster. Could potentially play RT in addition to his natural OG. Newman, though, I see as a natural C. We don't have the height/length we'd ideally want if Lynott stayed at RG with Newman at C.

Not a wash, but I could see how it could work out well for us regardless.

Agreed.
A flaw in the star system seems to be the wide gap between the top 3* and bottom 3* athletes. To me, the story of this class is the number of highly rated and offered 3* players: Lytle, Shanault, Bell, Jackson, Polley, Sherman, Edwards, Van Diest, Landman, Miller, etc.
It was such a big deal when Lynott (also a high 3*) committed two years ago, that I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. Where would he rank in this class?

Excited about this class.

Also very happy that 9 of the guys are already on campus. I'm a big believer in the value of guys getting an extra spring practice and the extra months in the S&C program. Even if they RS spring is big because the assistants have time to work on individual stuff they can't during the regular season while recruiting and preparing for that weeks game.

A couple things. Believe Van Diest was recruited to play in the middle and Wells on the outside. Callier will have his hand down and Hamilton will be OLB. Polley ends up at guard IMO.

I agree on a lot, but Newman and Roddick are not a wash in any way IMO.

Understand your thoughts. IMO Newman is more scheme diverse, can play T, G, C and has better feet. Roddick is massive. He's probably a guard or RT only. Decent feet, massive player, a lot of pop and power. He doesn't look sloppy in most film/photos but would benefit dropping 15-20 lbs and gaining a little bit more quickness. I see both guys being able to start at the next level for P5 programs.

Agree that both are different players and if we can't get Newman, I like the addition of Roddick as a nice fill-in late in the process. Both project as multi-year starters at the next level.

Newman prob too short to play tackle at this level. Closer to 6'3" I believe.

Newman is under 6'3". He can't play OT and is short for OG.

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out. Van Diest is probably our best pass rushing prospect from the film i've seen. Sucks that he's coming off so much surgery. If he can pick up where he left off at Cherry Creek, he could be a great edge rusher.

Wells has the athletic ability to play at several spots. I put him at MLB because I think he has the capability to play there which is tough to do. I think he could play DL, OLB, MLB. He's a very good athlete, I like how he uses his hands.

I agree on Callier. His size pigeon holes him a little bit at 6'2", 250lb. We have some big bodies coming in on the DL. With the 3-4, you need to have those big guys that can set the LOS and keep OL off your LB's. Callier doesn't really offer that right now. I think he's physical for his size, but I think his speed off the ball limits him at OLB and makes him better situated for DL. Still, the guy has tremendous stats in a good league. If I was the coaches, I'd try to bulk him up and play him on the DL.

I could see Polley at Tackle or Guard. I thought Polley did great in UA game. He played LT, was good against great competition Very strong, sturdy, stopped guy right off the snap with strong hands. The one issue he had was he quit moving his feet on plays and guys would disengage and make plays on the ball-carrier. He has the feet to play inside or outside.

Polley has everything is takes to be a dominant college guard. Hopefully he doesn't play outside just because he can.

Newman is under 6'3". He can't play OT and is short for OG.

good call. I know he played center in UA game. Wasn't sure of his height, thought he was taller. He was rock solid blocking on the inside but wasn't challenged much as most times the guards were covered or shaded and he was left uncovered to double team on pass plays. A good prospect no doubt, but not irreplaceable.
