Yes you get it early this week, Tuesday night games are back.
It is also hard to contain the excitement in an era of unrecognized greatness. Scott Frost is building his resume for the not quite Hall of Fame.
Yes that Scott Frost who led his UCF team to an undefeated season and National Championship (well self declared and they didn’t play anybody but he has the ring and the t-shirt if he didn’t give them to some poor working girl in Lincoln or Omaha.
Now they need to start preparing the banner because he is going for another National Championship, this one of the moral victory variety. Yes, Nebraska will be awarded the 2021 MVNC (Moral Victory National Championship) Might be the only time the word moral is ever associated with that program.
First Tuesday night game of the season and we get a good one. Appalachian State (4-1) at Louisiana (4-1), each school's only loss is to a quality P5 program.
Thursday night is less interesting with a down Navy (1-4) at mediocre Memphis (3-3).
Friday starts with struggling Clemson (3-2) at Syracuse (2-3). Life is different for the Tigers minus Lawrence and the rest of the talent they lost.
Also on Friday a chance to see San Diego State (24) who has beaten two PAC teams play against San Jose State (3-3) who hasn’t beaten anyone of note.
We also get the Friday night PAC12 offering with Oregon (9) who has suffered a bunch of significant injuries hosting Cal (1-4) who may not have anybody good enough to be considered significant if they got hurt.
Saturday we only get two games matching top 25 teams.
Newly elevated Georgia (1) hosts Kentucky (11) who have confused basketball with football and gone 6-0. They might wish it was basketball facing the Bulldogs who for the first time in three games gave up points last week.
Meanwhile Texas (25) probably needs a Heimlich more than they need to see Oklahoma State (12) coming in after gagging away a victory over arch rival Oklahoma.
Auburn (4-2) might be able to pull themselves back into the top 25 with a win at Arkansas (17) who is coming back to reality with two straight losses.
Mississippi State (3-2) gets the pleasure of facing Nick Saban’s Alabama (5) coming off a loss and coming in with getting back on track on their minds.
Also coming off a loss, BYU (19) goes to Baylor (5-1.) Many of these players may meet again in the future as the Cougar players do missionary work in prison ministry. Huge contrast in these future B12 conference mates. Two church based schools with different approaches to the rules. BYU prohibits extra marital sex, Baylor uses it as a recruiting tool, even if the girls aren’t in agreement.
Other notable games Purdue (3-2) is at Iowa (2), Florida (20) may speed up Ed O’s departure at
LSU (3-3).
If you can’t get enough bad football, and we are Buff fans, UConn (0-7) managed to stay winless by allowing UMass to get their first (and maybe only) win of the season. This week they get their last reasonable chance to avoid going winless with FCS Yale (2-2) coming in.
PAC 12 has managed to redefine mediocre this year.
Most notable game this week has Arizona State (18) going to Utah (3-2) which has two wins in a row including beating USC last week. Most of the rest of the conference other than Oregon is just hoping to win enough games to be bowl eligible.
Some teams we just want to see lose. Michigan State (10) hasn’t yet and probably won’t this week at Indiana (2-3.)
Somehow Nebraska (3-4) is favored at Minnesota (3-2) Another chance for a glorious choke job and more delusion and excuses shared in the parking lot at the truck stops. Will Frost ride home in the same bus he throws his players under.
Locally CSU (2-3) takes a stab at reaching .500. Appropriate since they are going to New Mexico (2-4). As usual the Lobos are bad so the Dude has a good chance.
Air Force (5-1) plays on the Smurf turf at Boise State (3-3) who has been up and down but is coming off a huge win against ranked BYU last week.
Wyoming (4-1) who lost their first last week hopes to get back on track hosting Fresno State (4-2) Being hospitable the game is scheduled for the afternoon with temps in the 40’s for the Californians.
Weather won’t be an issue for Northern Colorado (2-4) but everything else will be. UNC which has lost their last two games by a combined 103-24 goes to Dan Hawkins UC Davis (5-1) coming off it’s first loss of the season. Eddie Mac is discovering that this ain’t intramurals brother.
The top schools of our local small colleges all won last week.
If you are digging for something good to do this week Colorado Mines (6-0, 4-0 conf. ) host South Dakota Mines (4-2, 2-2 ) trying to shore up the top spot in the league.
Pueblo (4-2, 4-0) goes to New Mexico Highlands (1-5, 1-4 )
Colorado Mesa (4-1, 3-1 ) gets their free win against Fort Lewis (0-6, 0-5 ) and Western (5-1, 4-1 ) hosts Black Hills State (4-2, 2-2 )
