BOULDER — It’s crunch time for the Colorado cross country teams.

When the gun goes off Friday for the Pac-12 Championships in Colfax, Wash., the Buffs will begin a 22-day stretch that will see them compete in their conference championships, the Nov. 13 NCAA Mountain Regionals in Albuquerque, N.M., and the Nov. 21 NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky.

That’s three high-level competitions in three weeks. It means the Buffs must race, recover, race, recover — and then race one more time, a stretch that requires a delicate balance of going all out and still having enough left to be at their peak in the final race.

The strategy, according to head coach Mark Wetmore, will be one that has served the Buffs well in the past:

“We try to do very well at the conference meet, do whatever is necessary two weeks later at the regionals, and then, of course, do very well again at the nationals,” Wetmore said.

BOULDER — The University of Colorado cross country program will compete at the 2015 Pac-12 Conference Championships on Friday, October 30, in Colfax, Wash. at Colfax Golf Club.

The men will run first at 11:30 a.m. MT. while the women will follow at 12:35 p.m. MT. A short awards ceremony will follow the championships at 1:10 p.m. MT.

The top-ranked CU men have won all four Pac-12 team titles since joining the league in 2011. The Buffs won by seven points in 2011, defeating Stanford 46-53 and in 2012 they defeated the field with a score of 49-82, once again with Stanford coming in second. The Buffs won the 2013 title in front of the home crowd as CU hosted the championship that year. The Buffs defeated Oregon 28-54 with all five scoring harriers in the top nine. Last year (2014), CU defeated UO 30-57.

CU’s women have also been successful at the Pac-12 Championship, winning the inaugural title in 2011 over Washington (50-73). CU enters the meet ranked third nationally and is the highest ranked league team. Oregon is listed fifth in the poll.

A Daily Camera article entitled "CU cross country: Buffs' Erin Clark moves to front of pack" featuring Erin Clark but also of course discussing the Pac 12 Championships- http://www.buffzone.com/ci_29037233/cu-cross-country-buffs-erin-clark-moves-front

Erin Clark keeps inching the bar higher and higher.

As a sophomore a year ago, the University of Colorado cross country standout finished seventh at the midseason NCAA Pre-National meet. Clark was able to parlay that performance into a fourth-place finish at the Pac-12 Conference meet, a second-place finish at regionals and a 31st-place run at the NCAA championship.

Clark wanted to set a swifter pace this year, perhaps by cracking the top five at Pre-Nationals. So, of course, all Clark did two weeks ago was go out and win the darn thing.

Now entering the season's stretch run, Clark will have the target on her back as she tries to out-kick the competition the rest of the way, beginning Friday at the Pac-12 championships hosted by Washington State in Colfax, Wash.

Race day! (I'm going to be out and about (still doing the "hard work" of vacation), so won't be around to provide updates when the races are being run in a few hours.)

A few cross country-related tweets from yesterday. (Congrats to Mr. Pearson for the Pac 12 Male XC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor!)

Congrats Buffs! Phase 1 of the mission is complete, next phase is a repeat performance in Louisville, KY next month.
