I've been really impressed with the job he has done as a 1st year DB coach. Sure, he inherited Jimmy and Jalil so he had a lot to work with. But those guys have also improved a lot since last season.
Considering that we have had no pass rush and the DBs have been relied on to make the bulk of the tackles in run support, Ash has had his hands full. Throw in the injuries. Ewing, Orms, Sandersfeld, Vigo, Perkins. He had Jimmy playing through post-concussion issues last week. He's had to play guys like J Hawk, Mahnke, and Ussery. He has had to turn Olatoye into a safety. He has even played Jered Bell out of position there. He has had to burn the redshirt of a 5'8" true freshman, Terror Smith, that no one else in D1 even offered a scholarship.
And everyone he has plugged in has made plays without us seeing major breakdowns and blown coverages for big pass plays against us.
Ash is at the top of my list of coaches I wouldn't mind seeing retained on the next staff. Especially since he's also proving to be an energetic and capable recruiter.
