BOULDER — The postseason for the University of Colorado cross country teams starts on Friday, October 26, as the Buffs will compete at the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Championships at Stanford Golf Course.

For the second straight year, the championships will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks. The women will run a 6-kilometer course first at 11:10 a.m. PT/12:10 p.m. MT, while the men (8k course) will follow at 12:10 p.m. PT/1:10 p.m. MT. A short awards ceremony will follow each race.

The No. 1 CU women are the reigning Pac-12 Champions and have won the team title four times in the last seven years (2011, 15, 16 and 17). In 2011, the Buffs recorded 50 points to top Washington (73) and Stanford (75). In 2015, CU took down Oregon 45-51 for the title and in 2016, the Buffs recorded a 41-point margin a victory, the largest in Pac-12 history, defeating Washington 33-74. The Buffs won their third straight team title in 2017, besting Oregon and Stanford. CU recorded 53 points, while UO and SU each tallied 71 points.

The women are looking for their fifth Pac-12 title, but it won't be easy. There are four teams ranked in the top 30. Oregon is ranked fourth behind the Buffs. Stanford is sixth and Washington comes in at 16th.

"We are facing some unknowns," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "A Stanford team that we and everyone else would have expected to be a very strong team this year, so far is missing a couple of significant members. Oregon had a coaching change and a very significant change in their roster of people who came out and people who came in. They lost one of the best runners in the country who transferred along with the coaches to Washington, but the new coach came in and brought two women who had finished in the top 15 at the NCAA last year.

"So the Oregon team is a completely new team that we don't know very well; Stanford is missing a couple people who could come out at any moment. We are the favorites; I think that is a fair ranking, but we can't be overconfident or casual about it. We have to be ready to run hard."

CU's eighth-rated men have won six Pac-12 team titles since joining the league in 2011. The Buffs won by seven points in 2011, defeating Stanford 46-53 and in 2012 they defeated the field with a score of 49-82, once again with Stanford coming in second. The Buffs won the 2013 title in front of the home crowd as CU hosted the championship in Louisville, Colo. The Buffs defeated Oregon 28-54 with all five scoring harriers in the top nine. CU defeated Oregon 30-57 in 2014 and in 2015, the Buffs again beat Stanford for the title (46-57). Colorado again edged out the field in 2016, taking the title by just six points (41-47) over Stanford. In 2017, CU suffered its first defeat, losing to Stanford 41-47.

The men will be looking for their seventh Pac-12 title at the meet, but like the women, other teams look to have a say in the matter with six teams ranked. Stanford is the top-ranked Pac-12 men's team at fourth, but Washington is seventh, just ahead of the No. 8 Buffaloes. Oregon is just out of the top 10 at 11th, while UCLA is 12th. Washington State is the final team in the rankings at 29th.

"The men will go into the race ranked third behind Stanford and Washington," Wetmore said. "Each one of those teams has a reasonable chance to win the race if they execute it correctly. So that is our goal: to make no mistakes and have everyone completely healthy. We need to trust our race plan and maximize our chances."

Following the conference championships, both rosters will be cut to seven over the next couple of weeks before the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, November 9, in Provo, Utah, and the NCAA Championships, November 17, in Madison, Wis.

TV INFORMATION: Jim Watson will serve as the play-by-play and Dwight Stone will provide the color. Lewis Johnson joins the duo as the on-course reporter.

RESULTS: Results will be posted on pac-12.com/xcchamps upon the conclusion of the event.

Live Video - As noted in the article quoted above, the Pac 12 is (awesomely), for the 2nd straight year, showing the races live over (I believe) all their Network channels. For those whose Cable/ Satellite/ Cord Cutting subscription includes access to any of the Pac 12 channels, believe the races can also be streamed through a link at https://pac-12.com/cross-country/championships and/ or https://pac-12.com/live .

Entries and Live Results - http://www.rtspt.com/events/pac12/xc2018/
(One thing I love about these conference championships is that, unlike the NCAA's, and even the larger earlier invitationals, more than 7 runners per gender per team can tow the lines and race and represent for their teams. I don't know what (if any) the limit is for actual racers per gender for Pac (last year the Buffs ran 10 women), but the entries list (http://www.rtspt.com/events/pac12/xc2018/entries.pdf) has 12 women and 9 men entered for the Buffs this year.
Note- The scoring is still the same at the Pacs as the other races like NCAA's, with the top 5 finishers making up each team's score, while the 6th and 7th finishers can still help the team by adding points to other teams score if 6 and or 7 finish ahead of any of the other teams' top 5.)

(Obviously, like in all sports, VERY hard to know what happens in any given competition, and even more so in a sport like cross country where it's hard to ever know what any team's agenda is or priority given to ANY regular season race, but they're calculating (guessing) the Buff men tie for 2nd with Washington behind Stanford, while the women eek out a 1 point victory over Oregon.)

The live scoring was completely messed up on several of the runners, had a whole horde of them moving up 80+ positions between splits.

Yep- even now, they look very suspect, at least through 4K, with the time differences at that point from 12th place back vs. the leaders looking suspectingly large vs. the final results.

And, the men's telecast is now on.

See if the splits (click men's 8K tab at the same https://live.recordtiming.com/meets/1644/xc-scoreboard link) are more accurate this time.

STANFORD, Calif. — For the second straight season, University of Colorado senior Dani Jones is the women's individual Pac-12 Conference Cross Country Champion, as she won her title here today at Stanford Golf Course.

The CU women recorded a runner-up finish at the meet, while the men's team placed third overall.

PAC-12 CHAMPION: Jones, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., won her second title in as many years on Friday afternoon to become the first Buff since Molly Austin (2001 and '02) to win back-to-back individual conference titles. She won the 6-kilometer race in 19 minutes, 24.5 seconds, just over one second in front of the runner-up, Jessica Hull (Oregon), who crossed the finish in 19:25.1.

"It's extremely special [to win the championship]," Jones said. "I'm a senior and this is my last go-around, so it meant a lot, particularly with this group of women who have been amazing all season."
...

THE WOMEN'S RACE: As a team, the top-ranked Buffs finished second overall to No. 4 Oregon, which defeated CU 32-48. The Buffs placed three in the top 10, but Oregon had four runners in the top 10, which gave the Ducks a solid edge. CU defeated No. 6 Stanford, 48-81.

"Congratulations to Oregon," Wetmore said. "They had a good race. They are making steps race by race and they are a better team today than they were two weeks ago; we were a worse team than we were four weeks ago. So we have to go back to the drawing board to see what is missing and try to regather the momentum in three weeks."
...

THE MEN'S RACE: The eighth-ranked Buffaloes finished right where they were expected to on the form chart behind No. 4 Stanford and No. 7 Washington. Stanford ran an impressive race on their home course, placing three in the top five, and recorded a score of 44. UW was second with 62 points and the Buffs recorded a score of 82 for third. No. 11 Oregon was fourth with 93 points.
...

"We didn't want to be third; we didn't aspire to be third," Wetmore said. "While some of the men had good races, some of the important people did not. We lost a lot of points back after about 20th in the race. I'm happy with Gus Newcomb who was running in his first Pac-12. He rose up to be our fifth man. He is going to be a good future guy for us. John, Ryan and Joe did well. Lalo did pretty well, but I think he's a little higher than 18th on a good day, but we make no excuses.

"So, it was a good day for Gus and a pretty good day for the other guys. There were a couple of disappointing days for some of the other elders, but we will be good again next year."
...

PAC-12 NOTES: Since joining the Pac-12 Conference, CU has won at least one team or one individual title in the last eight years, although this is the first year the Buffs have not won a team title. CU has won 10 of 16 team cross country team championships since 2011.

UP NEXT: The postseason will continue for the Buffs at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships, November 9, in Provo, Utah. The women will continue to race a 6k, while the men move up to a 10k run.
