Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

Looks like soccer has two more verbal commits. Don't know who they are yet.

Topdrawersoccer (https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/col...women/colorado/clgid-205/tab-commitments#tabs) now showing a new 2020 Buff soccer commitment from forward Rachel Rosen, who lives in Hermosa Beach California and currently plays her club ball for the LAFC Slammers.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her club's page for her - http://lasl.ussoccerda.com/sam/teams/index.php?team=3951640&player=264465399

(Based on the timing, I'd GUESS she is the 2020 buff soccer tweeted about a few days ago.?. Still no new 2021 showing in topdrawersoccer.)

Looks like the new 2021 soccer commit tweeted (generically) about by the team back in late April (see post #388) may have been identified. Per the below, assume it may be 5'8" defender Phoenix (AKA Phoenix Dawn) Miranda, who is from Hawaii, and looks to attend Aiea HS (Island of Oahu) while playing her club ball with Leahi Soccer Club. Also, per one link I found, she may also play with Hawaii Surf Club's boys team. (Looks like the one's tweeting below (Phase 1) are a strength and conditioning group, so assume she also works with them.)

Welcome and congrats to her!!!

A few things I could find about her-
Was one of a select few players (2 defenders, 9 players overall) who were part of all 5 U15 teams/ camps held in 2017 per https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-soccer-articles/us-u15-gnt-player-list-2017-2018_aid42898
Was also at a U15 training camp held this past March per https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/clu...gnt-heads-to-norco-for-training-camp_aid43856

Not much info on it, but her ussoccer page - https://www.ussoccer.com/players/m/phoenix-dawn-miranda#tab-1

Also not much info on it (her team didn't report stats), but her Maxpreps page - http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/phoenix-dawn-miranda/UxXdheBBEeeT-Oz0u-e-FA/default.htm

richkern.com*** has a new Class of 2018 commitment showing up for the volleyball team in 5'10" Defensive Specialist (DS)/ (L)ibero/ Outside Hitter (OH) Zoe Neverdowski, who attends / attended Katy Taylor HS in Katy TX, and also plays for the Texas Tornado (18 Mizzuno) club team. (***As noted previously in this thread, http://www.richkern.com/vb/recruits/indexsub.asp?Div=DI&VBYear=2018, a free web page in a largely premium (and great for serious volleyball fans) website, only shows commits it newly knows about for 3 days.)

Welcome and congrats to her!!!

A few links I could find for her-

  • Maxpreps stats page - http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/zoe...S00gAmVebEWg/gendersport/volleyball-stats.htm (With her height, my (VERY UNINFORMED) guess would be she 1st gets looked at as a DS/ L contributor. However, this past season, she led her team in kills/set (3.5), while also being second in digs (2.0/ set) and serve receives (4.0/ set), so has been a BIG contributor on both the offensive and defensive parts of the game.)
  • The longest (~4 minute) highlight from the above link (videos in above link also look to be available on Youtube.)-

Per the below Instagram, looks like men's track and field has picked up a 2018 commitment from middle distance runner Jonathan Horton, who attends/ attended Metro Christian Academy in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Welcome and congrats to him!

His track results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=7479872#!/L0 (Hardly any senior season results are listed. He won the 800 meter at the 2017 3A Oklahoma State Championships after finishing runner-up as a sophomore (where the team competed at 4A). Showing nice range, he also contributed points to his team at those two Championships with a 3rd place in the 400M in 2017 after finishing 6th in 2016 in the 1600M.)

Cross country - https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=7479872#!/L0 (He finished 14th at the State Championships as a junior after ending up 12th as a sophomore.)

Looks like the men's cross country and track and field teams has picked up another nice 2018 commit in middle distance/ distance runner Jericho Cleveland, who attends and runs for Volcano Vista HS in Albuquerque, NM.

Welcome and congrats to him!

Volcano Vista star runner Cleveland chooses Colorado

By James Yodice / Journal Staff Writer

Thursday, May 10th, 2018 at 7:42pm

Among the metro area’s top male high school athletes, Volcano Vista’s Jericho Cleveland was one of the last to commit to a college.

But on Thursday, the Hawks’ stellar distance runner made a verbal commitment to national power Colorado, and expects to sign his national letter of intent perhaps as early as today.

Cleveland will be one of the featured athletes at this weekend’s Class 6A state meet which begins today at the University of New Mexico. He has had a terrific spring at the 1,600-meter distance, putting up some of the best outdoor times in the country, especially at meets in Arizona and California.

He will run the 1,600 and 3,200 this weekend at state. The 1,600 is today, the 3,200 is Saturday. He also is expected to run the 800 on Saturday and attempt the rare distance triple.
"
____________________________________________________________________________________________

His track results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=7517707#!/L0
(Definitely looks like a VERY talented young man, with his 4:09.42 mile time from last month currently showing as the 3rd best high school time in the country this year per https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Division/Event.aspx?DivID=89120&Event=58 , while his 800 meter time is also very solid (20th best HS time in the country so far this year). As noted in the above quoted article, this year's state championships in New Mexico are this weekend, where it sounds like he is primed to defend his 1600M and 3200M titles from last season, as well as running in the 800M for the 1st time at States .)

Cross country results - https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=7517707#!/L0
(Not QUITE as dominating as his track results, but he's still very impressively finished 3rd, 4th and 2nd in his (6A) state championships the past 3 seasons.)

Interview with the young man (after he won a big invitational race in California last month which, among other things, qualifies him for one of the biggest prep races of the year "June 8 at the Brooks PR Invitational in Shoreline, Wash." ) - http://mtsacrelays.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=69&do=videos&video_id=240500

The laxpower database is now showing a new 2018 lacrosse commit from attacker Rhianna Baca, who per the database attends Columbine High School in Littleton, and looks to play for the 3D lacrosse club in Denver.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Maxpreps page for her - http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/rhi...A2nzwbTA/gendersport/girls-lacrosse-stats.htm (Not showing any stats for 2018 season.)

Denver Post list of Feb. 2018 signers - https://www.denverpost.com/2018/02/07/national-signing-day-colorado-class-of-2018/

Not much info in it, but her player page in her club's website - https://3dlacrosse.com/selectplayerprofile/rhianna-baca

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Also, not a new commit to this thread (see post #247 from back in August 2016 for more info on her), but since it was just posted today, thought I'd paste the below instagram from her club confirming (???) Aurrora "Roo" (Sometimes Yarnell-) Williams commitment to the soccer team (HS Class of 2019).

Confirmation on the latest two 2018 volleyball Buffs being officially signed.

Again, welcome and congrats to Taylor DeProsse (see post #375 for more detail) and Zoe Neverdowski (post #393)!

In the laxpower recruit database (queried college "Colorado" at http://www.laxpower.com/recruits/recruits.php?db=wrecruits2019&action=view ), it's listing a new 2019 lacrosse verball commit in defender Karly van Leer, who attends Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, Sudbury Mass., and looks to play her club ball with Mass. Elite. (Note- From a couple other web pages I've now found, looks like she probably has been a Buff verbal commit for a year or more.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few other things I found regarding her-
"
...
Karly van Leer, Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.), Defense, 2019 — Colorado
She has a strong presence on ball and smart stick position. Van Leer communicates well off ball as well and is not afraid to mix it up near the midfield for a loose ball or push forward to start the attack.
...
"
  • Per https://events.r2it.com/lacrosse/UnderArmour/Roster/Division/Underclass , she was selected to the "NEW ENGLAND GIRLS - HIGHLIGHT" all-star team (I assume off the tryout noted in the prior bullet point).
  • An athletic bio for her is also available via link in the roster shown in the last prior link. A few things from that- Her listed lacrosse accomplishments there are "US Lacrosse National Tournament MA/RI team 2 in 2016. Under Armour Underclass New England Highlight team 2018. 3 year varsity defender. " A 2 sport athlete, She's also played on her high school's varsity basketball team (sounds like a point guard) for 3 years. She's 5'5".

Can't admit to knowing ANYTHING special about youth soccer, but can only assume it puts a young player in ELITE company to be named to a national team training camp. Per https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...nsas-city-after-qualifying-for-2018-world-cup , looks like TWO verbally committed Buffs are part of a 28 player national U-17 camp being held right now.

Congrats to goalie Rachael Black and defender Lawson Willis (both part of the 2020 incoming Buff class) for the recognition and opportunity to impress at a national level!

Note- per the article, this recent team was selected to help evaluate some additional players*** with an eye of selecting THE "big" "team that will play in the U-17 World Cup that starts this November in Uruguay. Be interesting to see if any future Buffs get selected to THAT major team. ***It says only 10 of the players in this camp were part of the 20 player team (https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...rr-names-20-player-concacaf-qualifying-roster) that qualified the U.S. for the World Cup.

Also in the soccer realm, wanted to mention that 2021 verbal commit Phoenix-Dawn Miranda (a defender) was today named to yet another National Training Camp for her U-15 age group. (She's been named to seemingly (or possibly literally) EVERY U-15 U.S. national team roster the last year or two.)

As with the two U-17 players I noted in the last post, congrats to her for the U-15 opportunity!

With the 2018/19 tennis team roster having been at a bare minimum 6 players for awhile after losing 3 players to graduation and a couple more to transfer, I've been assuming they were looking for at least two more players to join the team this season. Just looked at the roster again this evening, and looks like new Head Coach Steinberg AND company*** HAVE now added one more young student-athlete in 5'10" freshman Vera Markovic, who is from Belgrade, Serbia.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Her CU roster page - https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11951
(Among other things, it says she's been Serbia's age group champion at both the U-14 and U18 level.)

(*** Per her tennis profile at https://www.tennisrecruiting.net/player.asp?id=871909, she was a signed (NLI) Arkansas commit. However, I looked at the Razorback women's tennis web page, and they had a coaching change mid-season earlier this year, which I assume re-opened her recruitment. Since new Buff assistant Jovan Parlic was an Arkansas' assistant coach (and even interim head coach for awhile) last season, AND is also Serbian, I would guess (???) he helped quite a bit in getting Ms. Markovic to Boulder.)

Found some more nice recognition for many Buff soccer verbal commits and signees.
Congrats to all 6 for their (I'm sure WELL-EARNED) honors!

The ski team announced its newest class (for of course this coming 2018/19 academic year) at https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/7/30/skiing-buffaloes-add-seven-skiers-to-2018-19-roster.aspx .

There are 6 listed as freshmen and 1 listed as a junior in the roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=ski&roster=447&sort=class) (below quotes pulled from the article linked to above) -
  • "Filip Forejtek from the Czech Republic National Team will be coming to CU fresh off his 2018 Winter Olympic experience in PyeongChang where he placed 31st in the slalom and 34th in the giant slalom. He and another men's alpine skier, Teddy Takki from Finland, both have previous FIS World Cup experience under their belts. "
  • "Gerrard and Harsch aren't the only two coming from the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. They are joined by Max Bervy (alpine) on the men's side, and another Colorado product, Wyatt Gebhardt (Nordic), comes to CU from the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club."
  • "Erik Dengerud – Men's Nordic
Comes to CU from Norway and ski club Kjelsaas II … In the first cross-country FIS points list for 2018-19, he carried 83.04 points in distance and 199.69 in sprints … Placed 27th in the 15K freestyle in Vang, Norway on Jan. 12, 2018 at the National Championship race … "
Welcome and congrats to all!

Found a couple probable Buff commits- one for volleyball and one for men's golf. (I haven't gotten confirmation for either one from any of the listing services I typically use, so these might be considered at least a little tentative at this point.)

  • For volleyball, as @Buffnik mentioned in a Volleyball-specific thread, Head Coach Mahoney made the below tweet. Per a couple instagram posts I found (1st from her mother, then the student-athlete herself), looks like the 2019 verbal commit may be 5'3"-5'4" libero/ defensive specialist/ setter Savannah Perry, who looks to attend Ames High School in Ames, Iowa, and plays club ball for Iowa PowerPlex (currently their Under 17 team).

  • For men's golf, the below tweet indicates they also received a 2019 verbal commit, from Jack Hughes, who looks to be from the Aspen/ Snowmass area, but has evidently been at Montverde Academy, Montverde Florida the last couple years.

Welcome and congrats to both!
____________________________________________________________________
A little more on both-
Regarding Ms. Perry-
(She doesn't show up in the volleyball roster for 2017 (after being listed in 2015 and 2016), but does look to be a 2 sport athlete, also playing softball at her high school the last 2 seasons.)

  • A highlight video from March 2017-

Regarding Mr. Hughes-

Perry is from Ames, Iowa. I hope this means CU will add Iowa State to their volleyball schedule while she is playing. Iowa State has a ranked program this year so I am excited that she chose Colorado. I do realize the PAC is much more competitive in volleyball than the Big 12.

Just noticed that the Cross Country (running version) roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=cross&roster=446&sort=class) has been updated with the 2018 incoming freshmen,7*** of 8 of whom having already known about and posted about previously in this thread. The one who was NOT known about previously is distance/ cross country runner Josh Torres, who attended Northridge High School in Greeley.

Welcome and congrats to him!

A few things on him-

Cross Country times and results - https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=8521347#!/L0

Article on him - https://www.greeleytribune.com/spor...-experience-as-daniels-scholarship-recipient/
(Has more on him, and specifically discusses how he ".,,, earned the Daniels Scholarship, which gives him a full ride to any college in the country.....")

***Also want to give a formal welcome and congrats to the other seven now- rostered true freshmen, namely Jericho Cleveland, Gabe Fendel, Jonathan Horton and Al Scales on the men's side, and Elizabeth Constien, Annie Hill and Bailey Nock on the women's!
(As I try to do for all sports, the original post of this thread on page one includes a list of all the incoming track and cross country Buffs over the last few years, as well as a column which references which post(s) discussed them and their commitment to the Buffs.)

Sounds like a potentially very nice late pickup by the ski team. (Note- on the Buffs' roster (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=12024), looks like she's coming in as a junior for eligibility purposes.)

Welcome and congrats to Mikaela Tommy!

Direct link to article - https://cubuffs.com/news/2018/8/21/skiing-mikaela-tommy-added-to-ski-roster.aspx

"
BOULDER — Mikaela Tommy, one of the top giant slalom skiers in the world, will join the University of Colorado Ski Team, coach Richard Rokos announced Monday. Tommy joins seven other student-athletes who previously committed to skiing and continuing their education at CU.

Tommy, currently the No. 31-ranked giant slalom skier in the world, is the defending Nor-Am Cup Giant Slalom Champion. She comes to Colorado from Edelweiss Ski Club in Wakefield, Quebec, and has been a member of the Canadian National Team for the past five years. She made her debut on the Nor-Am Cup in 2011 at the age of 16 and raced her first World Cup race at Maribor, Slovakia, in 2013.

"She's very experienced," Rokos said. "She's an older athlete, she's been on the Canadian National Team for a number of years. What I'm expecting from her is leadership. She will be a mentor and it's something I'm excited to see and try. She's 23 and some of our other incoming freshmen are 17 and we've never had that big of a gap before, this is a new situation for me."

She has 40 World Cup starts to her credit with six World Championship starts and 17 Europa Cup starts to go along with 120 Nor-Am Cup starts. In Nor-Am Cup action, she has three season championships, the giant slalom in both 2013 and 2018 and the Alpine Combined in 2014. In the overall standings, she finished second in 2015 and third in 2018 and has finished in the top 11 five times, including fifth in 2014, seventh in 2013 and 11th in 2017. The only season she did not finish in the top 11 was in 2016 when she injured her knee.
...

Tommy and the rest of the Buffs will report for the start of the fall semester later in August to begin dryland training. The 2019 season will kick off with the CU Spencer James Nelson Memorial Invitational with alpine action starting Jan. 9 at Eldora and Nordic action at Steamboat Springs starting Jan. 12. Due to extenuating circumstances that include hosting the NCAA Championships two of the last three years, the alpine squads will race for the first time at Eldora since the 2015 season, the Buffs most recent NCAA Championship.
"

Asst. track and field coach Lindsey Malone posted a tweet (see below) featuring four new freshmen in her group (jumps and multi-events), and one of them had not been identified yet as a 2018 Buff in this thread. That person is men's multi-eventer (Decathlete) Ryan Charles, who looks to have attended Christ Presbyterian Academy HS in Nashville TN.

Welcome and congrats to him on becoming a Buff, and a formal Boulder howdy and welcome to all 4 new Buffs pictured in the tweet!

More on Mr. Charles:
His high school results (as usual, you need to sign up (for free) to see beyond last season's results on athletic.net.) - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=10120763#!/L0
And a few (mainly indoor) results from his track club - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=12573000#!/L0

(In high school, he won Tennessee's Division 2 Class A decathlon championships the last 2 years. His highest point total in 2018 (6,416) puts him 17th in the nation among high school decathletes last season per https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Division/Event.aspx?DivID=89120&Event=103 , with the other new Buff decathlete in the photo, Mr. Farmer, being in 7th. Overall, looks like a great potential duo of freshmen decathletes (along with a transfer) to join the roster in what was probably one of if not THE Buffs biggest point producing events at last season's Pac 12 Championships.

In addition to the decathlon, looks like Mr. Charles produced MANY points for his team at the state meet in individual events. If I'm reading them right, last season he also finished 3rd in the 110M hurdles, won the high jump, and was 2nd in the pole vault.)

Re volleyball, wanted to mention that, at least based on the main ranking service for prep and club players, looks like the 2019 CU class is shaping up to possibly be the deepest since I’ve been following recruiting very closely. Prepvolleyball.com is doing its annual countdown of its top 100 players (“Senior Aces”) going into their final year before college, and for the first time I can think of, three Buff verbal commits are on the list, ranked #92, 82 and 54 in the country.

My 1st source for these rankings, since Prepvolleyball.com is a largely premium paid subscription site and doesn’t allow names to be publicly announced immediately***, was a public Volleytalk thread (http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/74420/2019-senior-aces-top-100) Prepvolleyball DOES allow that lists the colleges (only, no names) to which the various #’d senior aces have committed. This is where I saw the rankings of the verbally committed Buffs listed. (Prepvolleyball announces 10 “Aces” per day, and haven’t announced the Top 20 yet, but I wouldn’t anticipate any future Buffs to be in that group.)
*** (it does seem like colleges often include a player’s “Senior Ace” number in their bios, so must have permission, as do, based on the below, evidently at least some clubs and high schools.)

Although prepvolleyball lists are premium, I have since found a public tweet and a couple facebook posts (see below) that indicate:
  • Senior Ace #92 is 6’6” middle blocker Alexia Kuehl.
  • #82 is 6’3” Outside Hitter/ Opposite Elissa Alcantara (both from Florida).
  • From the instagram below saying she's somewhere in the 50-60 range, I’d assume #54 is 6’0” outside hitter Jill Schneggenburger (From California).
Congrats to all three for the honors. Hope they (and all the other 2019 Buff commits) have great and healthy final high school and club seasons!

Since I haven't seen the usual generic tweet from any of the Buff coaches indicating a new commit, put this in unconfirmed status right now, but per the usually reliable topdrawersoccer.com (and the header of her private Instagram account), looks like soccer may have received a new 2020 verbal commit from defender Jayden Newkirk, who looks to attend and play for California's Los Alamitos HS, and the Strikers ECNL club team.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Couldn't find much on her:
Her team's Maxpreps page - http://www.maxpreps.com/high-school...os,ca)/girls-soccer-winter-17-18/schedule.htm
(Unlike most schools, they don't even list their roster, let alone stats, so no confirmation she plays with them. However, per the below she does, and per Maxpreps her team ended up ranked #15 in the nation and #5 in California last season.)

Her being named to 2nd Team "Dream Team" from the Press-Telegram (assume local newspaper for her) last season as a sophomore - https://www.presstelegram.com/2018/04/05/press-telegram-girls-soccer-dream-teams-for-2017-18/

A page for her apparent club team - https://home.gotsoccer.com/rankings/team.aspx?TeamID=909311&History=yes&compact=
(It lists her being on the roster, but not much individual info. Like with her high school's team, her club team is pretty highly ranked, being, per this link, #14 nationally and #2 in California.)

that is the type of class I like to see Mahoney get. some height and talent. hard to win in the pac 12 with middles and outside hitters under 6'

With September closing out- it means we're almost to October, and after October it is, of course, November, which always contains the 1st NLI (National Letter of Intent) signing day.

Thought I'd update, as I always do, the bottom of the original post with 2018's signing dates (for 2019/20 academic year), and wanted to note there's a couple big changes in the Olympic sports this year (from the dates at http://www.nationalletter.org/signingDates/future.html )-

  • They've done away with separate "early" and "regular" signing periods. Previously, Olympic sports had 2 separate signing periods, one starting in November, the 2nd in February. There's now just one long signing period, this year going from November 14th, 2018 through August 1, 2019. (Note- the "major" sports, basketball and football, still have 2 signing periods.)
  • Previously, soccer had had only one signing period, starting in February (like football used to be). Soccer is NOT broken out in the above link this year, so looks like that sport will be the same as all others from this year forward, with the young women allowed to sign starting November 14th (this year) if they wish.

Per the below, looks like we have our 1st new 2020 lacrosse commit after their rule change***. It is Sydney Zimmerman, a 5'6" midfielder / attacker who attends and plays for Rockford HS, Rockford Michigan, and also plays for Summit Lacrosse (out of Denver) for club.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I found for her:
__________________________________________________________________

*** As I noted in a thread ~1-1/2 years ago (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/bi...er-olympic-sports-follow.126064/#post-2209166), the NCAA approved some of if not THE toughest rules for any NCAA sport attempting to curb early recruiting in lacrosse (based I believe on their coaches' association recommendations), as it disallows any direct and indirect (through high school and club coaches, etc.) recruiting contact between college coaches and potential recruits before September 1st of a student-athletes junior year of high school. (If I remember correctly, I believe softball chose to adopt similar (stronger) rules this summer.)

With my only having found two 2020 commits before the rule change, and typical lax classes so far being around 10 if not more signers, assume we should see quite a few new 2020 lax commits pop up in the coming months.
