Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

New lacrosse commit found- Kelly Gazarik

The laxpower.com recruit database now has another young woman committed to come to Boulder to join the lacrosse team this coming 2015/16 season- Kelly Gazarik, the 2nd person in this class from the Commonwealth of Virginia, in this case Tabb High School in Yorktown.

Welcome to Ms. Gazarik!

I wasn’t able to find out much of any information about her via Google search, especially regarding lacrosse. (Laxpower doesn’t even have a position listed for her.) It looks like she has been a 3 sport athlete, also playing on the field hockey team (2nd team all-district the past season as a defender) and indoor track. Also sounds like a great student; per (http://www.dailypress.com/dp-spt-teel-column-tabb-lax-20150530-column.html#page=1) , she “plans to major in biochemical engineering while minoring in Spanish and biomedical engineering at the University of Colorado”.

Thanks Buffnik.

Welcome to Ms. Cannon!

A few things I could find-

1) Looks like Ms. Cannon is a forward who attends West Torrance High School, and also plays with the West Coast FC (soccer club). Source- http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/kayla-cannon/pid-71421/tab-articles . (Probably largely meaningless at this point given how young she is, but topdrawersoccer has her rated as a 3 star player.)

2) Per that same source (“Soccer/ Academic honors” tab), honors for her listed include: National Team Roster - U14, U.S. Soccer Training Invite, ODP Regional Team, PDP Invite, and ODP State Teams.

3) Her high school team won the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title this past year, the 1st time for her school’s team since 1982. For what it’s worth, maxpreps ( http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/west-warriors-(torrance,ca)/girls-soccer-winter/home.htm ending up ranking her team as #49 in California and #116 nationally.

4) Doesn’t look like maxpreps has stats for her sophomore year, but it looks like stats might be complete (???) for her freshman year (2014), and she (impressively to me for a frosh) had 6 goals and 10 assists for the varsity team in 19 games played.

5) She was named 1st Team All-conference this year (http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/prepsports/2015/04/10/all-pioneer-league-girls-soccer-selections/ ) .

Nice to see that it looks like soccer uses the same tweeting ritual for new commits as football. Barring a weird coincidence of timing, looks like Ms. Cannon is confirmed as a Buff verbal!

New 2017 lacrosse commitment- Grace Gallagher

Looks like lacrosse has picked up another 2017 commitment- midfielder Grace Gallagher from Radnor High School in Pennsylvania and the STEPS Philly lacrosse club. Welcome to her!

[tweet]614760020496945152[/tweet]

(The tweet has a link to a short question and answer article- http://toplaxrecruits.com/waveonesp...nor-pa-2017-mf-gallagher-commits-to-colorado/ . Sounds like she’s recovering from an ACL injury. Good luck to her on her recovery.)

Just wanted to mention some of the Olympic sport rosters have been updated for the 2015/16 seasons.

My notes on the rosters that have updated-

1) Men’s Golf- The 4 new freshman Buffs in the original post (OP) are confirmed, as well as the 2 transfers mentioned in the separate transfer thread. One note I added to the OP is that one of the 4 freshmen Buffs (Ben Bradley) will actually be a sophomore as he started at CU this past January and already competed this past season. Biographies not yet added for any of the new Buffs.

2) Soccer- The 7 incoming freshmen listed in the OP are now shown on the 2015/16 roster, along with the one known transfer (Danica Evans, a junior from the U. of Portland) already noted in the separate transfer thread. Also of note- 2 of last year’s freshmen, midfielder Nancy Best and goalkeeper Scout Watson, are showing as red shirt freshmen, so still have 4 years of eligibility. Biographies have been added for all 7 freshmen, but there isn’t one for Ms. Evans yet.

3) Tennis- The 2 Aussies noted in the OP are now shown on the roster, with linked biographies.

4) Volleyball- The 6 incoming freshmen in the OP are now officially on the roster. Right now, there is only one with a linked biography, Aiden Lea (who was the only one who arrived and started school early at CU this past January).

She also smashes watermelons with her lacrosse stick.

Just wanted to mention there were a few honors I found Buff commits and signees received for this last high school season:

Gatorade State Athletes of the Year (Year coming to CU)-

(1) Track and Field

Minnesota- Boys’ Track- Joseph Klecker (Mid Distance/ Distance runner, 2015)
Arizona- Two honors- Both Girls’ Track and Girls’ Cross Country- Danielle Jones (Mid Distance/ Distance runner, 2015)
Pennsylvania- Girls' Cross Country- Brianna Schwartz (2015)
Georgia- Boys' Cross Country- Reilly Friedman (2015)

(2) Girls' Soccer
North Dakota- Jenny Marsh (2016)

____________________________________________________________________________________

And, USA Lacrosse has announced its 2014/15 high school lacrosse All-American Teams ( http://www.uslacrosse.org/portals/1/documents/pdf/participants/players/girls-aa-team-2015.pdf ). Future Buffs on the list are:

1[SUP]st[/SUP] Team
Caroline Perry (From Colorado, Midfielder- 2015)
Miranda Stinson (Virginia, Midfielder- 2015)

Honorable Mention
Julia Lisella (From Colorado, Goalie- 2015)

Still too early to get outside confirmation, but from multiple tweets (including some commented on and/ or favorited by her) looks like the Olympic sports may have their 1st commitment overall for 2018 in 5’5” lacrosse offensive midfielder Kate Burnside from Cathedral High School and the Indy United Lacrosse Club (both located in Indianapolis Indiana). (My main source for finding and/ or confirming lacrosse commits, the laxpower.com commitment database, doesn't look like it's started listing anything yet for 2018 class commitments.)

Assuming Ms. Burnside has chosen to join the Buffs in a few years, a big congrats and welcome to her! Hope the rest of her high school experience is only positive.

A couple notes:

1) Looks like her high school team won the Indiana State Championship this year. Very impressively to me, it sounds like Ms. Burnside, even as a freshman, was a big contributor to the team's success. From a quote in a team season wrap-up article on its webpage (http://gocathedralathletics.com/2015/06/14/girls-lacrosse-season-wrap-up/ ):

“Freshman midfielder Kate Burnside also emerged as a leader, raising the bar for older teammates.

“She played so hard all the time, and did not hold back one bit,” (Head Coach) Chrest said. “She was involved in almost every play on the field.”””

2) Some video highlights for her are available at http://www.hudl.com/athlete/5182331/kate-burnside .

I think our Ladies Lacrosse team is going to be something special. This coach... man, she good.

Following up quickly behind the lacrosse team, it looks like soccer has just received its 1[SUP]st[/SUP] 2018 commitment in Chaynee Kingsbury, a freshman forward this past year at Colorado's Windsor High School, as well as being part of the Colorado Storm soccer club.

Congrats to Ms. Kingsbury joining the Buffs!

(The 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] tweet below indicates the Buffs are confirming they did get a new 2018 commitment, although of course they can’t say WHO it is until the player is signed, which in this case will be over 2 years from now.)

[tweet]626901915138273280[/tweet]

[tweet]626911678861455360[/tweet]

Things I could find out about Ms. Kingsbury-

1) Among Colorado high school players, her 46 points (15 goals and 16 assists) were 2nd highest on her team (behind only a senior), 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] overall among Colorado freshmen, and 47[SUP]th[/SUP] in Colorado among all high school players per Maxpreps (Per http://www.maxpreps.com/leaders/girls-soccer-spring-15/,points/colorado/stat-leaders.htm ).

2) Also Per Maxpreps ( http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/cha...hlightid=53fb52c9-50fe-e411-ab38-a0369f3c18ea ), she was named her team’s player of the year, very impressive for a freshman on a team that made it to the Colorado 4A state semifinals. Per her coach, “Chaynee was a big part of the success our team had this year. She contributed to a team that scored 100 goals in 19 games and only allowed 12. While Chaynee did not lead the team in scoring, her 16 assists (tops in our conference, tied for third in all of 4A) and 15 goals demonstrate what a balanced player she was and her commitment to giving her teammates opportunities to score as a young freshman. I specifically recall her desire to play in the midfield or even defense if needed to help seal the win vs. Battle Mountain in the State Quarter Final. ….”

3) Looks like she’s also been a good contributor (3 goals and 4 assists per http://www.eliteclubsnationalleague.com/teams/68833268/38261411-68833329/TEAM.html ) for her club team (Colorado Storm ECNL Under 15) that looks to be ranked #8 in the country per topdrawersoccer in its age group in the “Grande Sports Academy TeamRank Top 25 Rankings” (http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-soccer/club-soccer-team-rankings/women/u15/3/563

New 2016 lacrosse commit- Bridget Mitchell

Looks like lacrosse has received another commitment as mid-fielder Bridget Mitchell, a member of the 2016 high school class from Shaker Heights High School in Ohio, committed to join the Buffs via twitter yesterday. Welcome to her!

[tweet]628341605288804352[/tweet]

Notes about her-

1) As a junior this year-

[tweet]611688164483313664[/tweet]

2) A short biography found for her as part of her being named to the Midwestern team for the Under Armour All American Underclass Tournament that took place this summer- https://events.r2it.com/lacrosse/UnderArmour/Roster/Division/Underclass# .

(Note- I'll edit this post when I get confirmation from laxpower or another outside source.)

Don't ever remember CU getting a commitment this early.

2 additional distance runners for cross country and track on rosters

The cross country and track teams (for distance runners only) have had their rosters updated on cubuffs.com, and a couple of the freshmen athletes listed were not included in this thread previously:

Justice Ramos, is listed on the cross country runner and as a distance runner on the track rosters. He’s from Dolores, Colo., and went to Montezuma-Cortez High School. Although showing as a distance runner and on the cross country roster, looks like he was mainly a 400 and 800 Meter runner in high school, finishing 7[SUP]th[/SUP] in the 400M and 4[SUP]th[/SUP] in the 800M in the 2015 Colorado 4A state championships per maxpreps ( http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/jus...Z5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/track-field-stats.htm ) . (I think it is somewhat common for the 800M runners to run cross country at CU; I assume to help build their base for track season.)

Abigail Regner, a distance runner who is on both the cross country and track rosters. She’s from Basking Ridge, N.J., and went to Ridge High School.
Her 2015 season ended with a 6[SUP]th[/SUP] place finish in the Group 4 (fastest) 800 meter race of the New Jersey Groups 1, 4 & Non-Public B Group Championships. It looks like her other main event was the 1,600M. She also finished 55[SUP]th[/SUP] in her senior season at the New Jersey cross country Meet Of Champions. (Her results are from http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=5993444 for track and http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=5993444 for cross country.)

Welcome to both joining the Buffs!

Note 1- It looks like the track and field roster only lists freshman distance runners at this point, so assume the omission of the other freshmen Buffs listed on this thread just means the roster for disciplines other than distance (sprints, hurdles, field, etc.) just haven’t been added yet.

Note 2- on the men’s cross country side, I assume at least partly due to their great depth the last couple years, 4 athletes are listed as red shirt freshmen, so still have 4 years to fight for a spot to help the Buffs. They are Ryan Forsyth from Severna Park, Maryland, Ethan Gonzales from Broomfield, Christopher Herrick from Missoula, Montana, and Paul Miller from Fort Collins. Mr. Gonzales is also showing as the lone red shirt freshman on the track and field side.

Thanks to the topdrawerlacrosse.com database, and the below tweet and Facebook page, looks like Buff lacrosse has a new 2017 commitment in 5’5” attacker Caitlin (or Cait) Burnham from Novato, Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield and the Stick With It Lacrosse Club in Walnut Creek, all in Northern California.

Welcome and congrats to her committing to join the Buffs!

https://www.facebook.com/MarinCatholicAthletics

(Note- I also found this website which includes her as a commitment and might have future info helpful to Buff lacrosse fans- http://www.connectlax.com/collegeteam/female-d1-at-university_of_colorado_boulder .)

Info I could find for her:

A profile page for her which includes a 2 minute 31 second highlight video from her past season- http://www.connectlax.com/profile/CaitlinB62

Per https://new.berecruited.com/athletes/2552316 , looks like she had 36 goals and 10 assists in her 21 game season this past year.

Per http://www.stickwithitlacrosse.com/club-team.php , she was chosen to represent the “Northern California Chapter on Nor Cal Team 1 at the 2015 US Lacrosse National Tournament over Memorial Day weekend May 23-24!”

Maxpreps (http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/marin-catholic-wildcats-(kentfield,ca)/girls-lacrosse/stats.htm ) also has stats for her team and her, as well as a ranking (#41 in California). (Assume with most of her team’s stat leaders this past season being non-seniors, they have a good chance of being a tough team this coming year.)

A couple tweets linking to short articles/ question and answer features for a couple of the recent Buff commitments:

Soccer 2016 commit Kennedy Yost-

& 2017 lacrosse commit Caitlin (or Cait) Burnham-

(Got to love that Ms. Burnham is impressed by all CU has to offer (Hope many recruits get the same impression, and the reality meets the expression when they get here!)- to quote one of the questions in the article-
"
Why did you choose the school? “I chose CU Boulder because the campus and the area are just beautiful; the academic offerings are exactly what I am looking for; the size of the school and resources of the athletic department are ideal; and Coach (Ann) Elliott is building a competitive lacrosse program that I am excited to be a part of.”
")

Future volleyball Buff (2016 commitment) Lauren Dorrell has been rated the #84 "Senior Ace" in the country by paid subscription site prepvolleyball.com (the preeminent source for prep volleyball team and individual rankings and info (and getting more and more college content also)).

From her club team posting (assuming they got permission from prepvolleyball before posting)-

Congrats to her, and hope she has a great senior season!

I will be removing a couple lacrosse player commits from the table of commitments for that sport appearing on the original post, as it looks like they are no longer coming to CU-

1) Texan Sophie Duchesne was and still is listed as coming to CU this year (2015) on the laxpower database, but she's not on the cubuffs roster that does now list this year's freshmen, and when I do a search on her name in the colorado.edu student search, nobody comes up. (Assume it's just one of those things where plans changed and/ or things happened.?.)

2) 2017 New Jersey verbal commit Claire Smesko was, as I noted in post #53 of this thread, listed as coming to CU on her club's page that listed their players' commitments, and she also showed up later as a CU commit in the laxpower database. Laxpower no longer has her listed as being a Buff commit, so I went back and looked at her club's page, and it now has her listed as an Elon commitment.

Best wishes to both young women.

Note- Another young woman listed on the OP table as a 2015 lacrosse commit, Kelly Gazarik, also isn't on the lacrosse roster on cubuffs right now. She does show up as being a CU student when I do a colorado.edu search, however, so I'll leave her as a commit for now, just in case the roster hasn't been updated yet, or if she's planning on walking on or trying out for the team.

Looks like soccer has picked up another 2018 commit, but no info I can find right now about who it is.

Looks like soccer has picked up another 2018 commit, but no info I can find right now about who it is.

Based on the timing, I'm thinking the new 2018 soccer commit related to the above tweet may now be known, as defender Jesse Loren from Redondo Beach CA and the Slammers FC (soccer club) seems to have just tweeted her commitment-

(Note- A 2017 defender commitment, Hannah Cardenas, seems to be from the same club team.)

As I often have written,I'm always impressed how some young athletes can contribute to and excel with their high school teams as freshmen and sophomores. In the case of Ms. Loren, looks like she was the only freshman (and there wasn't even a sophomore) named 1st team All- League as a member of her high school team- http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/prepsports/2015/04/10/all-bay-league-girls-soccer-selections/

Her profile at the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) website- http://www.eliteclubsnationalleague.com/teams/68833268/29740212-68833329/60014377.html

Her (limited info provided) Topdrawersoccer profile (of course, no CU commitment showing yet)- http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/jesse-loren/pid-75568/tab-articles

Welcome and congrats to her committing to the Buffs, and hope the rest of her time in high school is only positive!

As I mentioned in the above post, the above linked article had a few new freshmen Buffs I hadn't listed in this thread before. Listing them and quoting from the above article, the other newcomers are:
Sprinter- "Abdiel Agramonte Moreno (Las Vegas, Nev./Rancho HS)" (Stats- http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=3987287 )

Combined Events (decathlon, heptathlon, etc.)-
"Duane McClurkin (Fountain, Colo./Fountain-Fort Carson HS)
... McClurkin earned four letters as a member of the Fountain-Fort Carson track and field team, competing in the springs and jumps. The Trojans were the 2014 and ’15 Colorado 5A Track and Field State Champions. In 2015, he placed second at the state championship in the 400, finishing in 48.02 after winning the prelims in 48.22. McClurkin also placed fourth at state in the high jump, clearing 6-6. He recorded a personal best 47.97 in the 400 at the Colorado Springs Metro Championships. Earlier in the season, McClurkin jumped 6-8 at the Pomona Invitational in the high jump."
"Maja Wichhart Donzo (Cantonsville, Md./Cantonsville HS)...Wichhart Donzo was a four-time Baltimore Country triple jump champion. As a senior at Catonsville High School, she placed second at the state championship, jumping a personal best of 38-2.50. She was also third that year in the long jump, which was another PR (18-1.50). Wichhart Donzo owns CHS records in the 100-meter hurdles (15.19), long jump (18-15) and triple jump (38-2.50). She was named first team all-county all four years and was first team all-metro her junior and senior years."
"Joseph Martinez (Greeley, Colo./Greeley Central HS)" (His stats per maxpreps- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/jos...Z5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/track-field-stats.htm )

Throwers
"Dalaney Hall (Lakeview, Ore./Lakeview HS)...Hall, a javelin thrower, was ranked 19th nationally out of high school and was a two-time Oregon State Champion (javelin). Hall won the 2015 state meet with a toss of 144-10 and in 2014, she won with a throw of 137-4. Her personal best in high school was 146-1, which she threw on April 29, 2015. Hall also competed in other events at LHS. She ran the 100 and 200 meter dashes and competed in the pole vault, long jump, high jump and shot put. Hall placed third at state in 2015 in the pole vault after clearing 9-9."
"Grayson Webber (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS)"

A couple other notes-
1) There are also a couple transfers not previously listed in the transfer thread noted in the article which I'll add to that thread.
2) Earlier In this thread, I had Dionne Taylor Jr. (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) comin to the Buffs, but just had described him as a llikely high jumper for the Buffs. In the article, they note he will be a multi-event athlete for the Buffs. Quoting the article-
"
Taylor owns the Pine Creek High School high jump record at 7-0, which is in the top 10 all-time in Colorado history. He cleared the mark, which was the fourth best in the nation for the 2015 season, at the Colorado Springs Metro League Championships. Taylor placed third at the state championships, reaching 6-8 in the finals. Prior to that finish, he won the high jump at seven consecutive meets. Taylor also placed seventh in the long jump (21-4) and was 10th in the triple jump (42-11.50) at the 2015 state championship. He earned first team all-state honors (high jump) and was first team all-conference (high jump and long jump) as a senior. In 2014, Taylor was all-conference (high jump) and placed third at state (6-7).
"

Looks like Buff volleyball may have picked up a new 2016 commitment, Lillie Klemmer, who is listed as a 5'10" (high school roster) or 5'11" (Maxpreps) middle blocker for the Ka Ulukoa volleyball club, and Punahou High School in Honolulu, HI. I believe Punahou is one of the top HS programs in (relatively) volleyball mad Hawaii. (This year, Maxpreps has them currently as the #1 ranked team in Hawaii, and they won last year's state championship.)

Welcome to Ms. Klemmer!

Hard to tell much about her from her Maxpreps stats (it looks like her school may not report all game stats (there's none for this season), and only has 15 sets listed for for her as a junior, while it sounds like she was a starter based on a few articles I found)- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/lil...S00gAmVebEWg/gendersport/volleyball-stats.htm

Recruiting profile with some videos- http://www.ncsasports.org/womens-volleyball-recruiting/hi/honolulu/punahou-school/lillie-klemmer
(Although middle blockers typically don't play much back row defense, her profile says she also stated playing beach volleyball, which requires an all-around game and, as she states, should help with her defensive skills in case that's helpful in earning her more court time at CU.)

~1-1/2 hour video of full state championship match (Ms. Klemmer is #6 on the team with the dark colored jerseys)-
