ZURICH, Switzerland — Former University of Colorado standout and current volunteer assistant coach Jenny Simpson won her first 1,500-meter IAAF Diamond League Championship on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.
Simpson entered the race in third-place of the Diamond League standings and needed to win in order to take home the championship. She won the race in 3:59.92, but it wasn’t easy. Simpson ran in front and for most of the race, Sifan Hassan was right on her shoulder. Simpson started to pull away from Hassan with about 100 meters left, but then USA teammate Shannon Rowbury moved past Hassan and challenged Simpson in the final meters. It was a photo finish in every sense of the word as the two women lunged at the line; but Simpson had Rowbury by 0.01 seconds.
