Skiers Primed For NCAA Title Run (BUFFS WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!)

Rep to Aztec staying on top of the quest for #20.

Go Buffs

I would recommend people contact the P12 network and ask that events like this be televised. With CU and UU the top two teams in the country, it would seem natural that the P12 net would want to televise an event where one of their members stands an excellent chance of winning a national championship.
The problem is that Skiing is not a sport that The PAC-12 supports. The Buffs and Utah are in the RMISA. Stanford has a fencing team (NCAA approved sport) and probably cup-stacking, too, but you wouldn't expect the PAC-12 Network to cover their matches.

The 1st skiers are starting their runs on the women's giant slalom. Looks (and sounds) very windy! Viewing and stats links (also available in the original post)-

[tweet]575997497023152128[/tweet]

#2 was a Buff, and has the 2nd fastest time out of 2 skiers.

Edits (figure I'll just keep using this post for 1st run updates)

Since both men's and women's live results are in the tweet, wanted to highlight http://www.live-timing.com/race2.php?r=150549 is the link to the women's race, the one currently being run.

In addition to bib #2, looks like the Buffs are bibs #14 and 24. Bib #2 (Brooke WALES) is 4th of 5 skiers, with a Dartmouth skier having already fallen.

Ouch- a 2nd Dartmouth skier didn't finish. That could make a championship very tough for them to win (unless their 3rd skier can kill it).

2nd Buff (Honkonen) done and WAY back from the leader (~4-1/2 seconds). (Course seems to be degrading badly- all the top places are held by the earliest finishers.)

3rd Buff (Grosvold) safely down, and has a good run (given how bad most are doing now on the deteriorating course) and is 11th place so far. Earlier, a DU skier didn't make it down- so that might help some in point scoring in relation to them, although their other skiiers are 3rd and 6th so far in the 1st run, so they could still have good scoring from this event.

So, all the 1st runs are complete, and all the Buffs made it down safely. There will now be a break before the 2nd run (assume to reconfigure the course, give the skiers a break, etc.). As of now, the Utes are in the lead, with skiers in 2nd, 4th and 19th, vs. the Buffs skiers who are in 5th, 12th and 22nd. DU's skiers, as mentioned above, are 3rd-6th-DNF, so I'd say are hypothetically roughly tied with the Buffs point-wise IF, of course, there wasn't a 2nd run that could change EVERYTHING.

Hopefully the Buffs can take advantage of their generally earlier starts in the 2nd runs (compared to the Utes and Pioneers) to make up some time and move up in places. (For those who don't know, final places in this event will be determined by the fastest combined times of each skiers' 2 runs. The 2nd run's starting order is in the reverse order of how the top 30 skiers finished the 1st run's time-wise. So, the 30th place skier after the 1st run gets to go down the 2nd run 1st, so gets the cleanest snow, while the 1st place skier in the 1st run has to go down last, etc..)

A couple more notes:

1) the video stream has now added a note that 2nd runs for the women's giant slalom will be starting ~9:00 mountain time.

2) Forgot to mention earlier that, in addition to team races, there are also individual honors handed out in these championships, one of which is being named an All-American. I have now added at the bottom of the original post a list of Buff All-Americans this year, and will try to keep it updated as the various events finish. So far, congrats to Rune Oedegaard and Mads Stroem for earning 1st team All-American (awarded to the top 5 finishers of each race) in yesterday's men's freestyle Nordic race, and Maja Solbakken, Petra Hyncicova and Ane Johnsen for all earning 2nd team All-American status (which as awarded to 6th to 10th place overall finishers) in yesterday's women's freestyle Nordic race.

YMSSRA - appreciate the updates

Honkonen just finished her run with time that puts her in 4th right now in the giant slalom.

1st Buff has completed her run, and was only 4th of the 10 finishers so far, so may not get the Buffs many points. However, the 1st Ute skier in her 2nd run just fell, so won't earn any points.

AND- my video stream just went out. And it just came back on after a refresh.

Quite a few skiers falling in this 2nd run (at least 4 already), most recently a New Mexico one.

Wow, there was just a mini snow tornado near the starting line. They're holding the next starter.

And, the next skier has started.

Grosvold taking her run now for CU. 3rd place run.

11 skiers left.

3rd CU skier had to stop to avoid going off course, so had a tough 2nd time, and is back in 17th overall.

Just looking at the podium scores - but that was a tough second heat. Utes made up some ground in the Women's half.

So, looks like not a disastrous result for the Buffs, but not the best either. Definitely lost ground to DU and Utah (edit) and New Mexico. Unofficially, CU got 11th, 19th and 21st. Utes and DU only had 2 finishers each, but the Utes were in places 4-5 and Pioneers 2-3, so they will be gaining ground on the Buffs. I QUICKLY looked and calculated in my head, and the Buffs may only have an ~6 point lead now over the Utes, and the lead over DU is down to maybe 33 points or so, neither material with so many races left.

Too bad the Buff's best placed finisher in the 1st round (Brooke Wales Granstrom- 5th place after 1st run) had to stop for a second to avoid skiing out in the 2nd run, so had the worst time of the 2nd run finishers, and ended up 21st overall. (Such a small margin for error in Alpine skiing!)

Men's giant slalom scheduled to start 10:30 MT. Looking at the start list, looks like the Buff's don't have the greatest starting positions, going 12th, 18th and 28th. (For a comparison, DU's skiers going out 2nd, 4th and 16th, and Utah 6th, 10th and 14th.)

Final official results for the women's giant slalom- http://barttiming.com/eisa/Results15/EISA/ncaa2015-1.pdf .

They don't have official team scores on that page, but the unofficial results has the following points for the race which looks accurate-

Plc Team
1 DU 71
2 UU 60
3 UNM 57
4 MSU 53
5 CBC 52
6 CU 42
7 UNH 34
8 MID 32
9 UAA 27
10 DAR 23
11 UVM 19
12 BAT 8

Wow- the top DU skier didn't finish. (Evidently had finished 16th in the recent World Championships at Beaver Creek.) Another DU skier is in 1st early on.

And, Another (from Montana State) skier falls right after the DU skier.

And, a Ute just fell.

1st Buffs down (GUNNARSSON)- a VERY respectable 3rd place of the racers so far on the 1st run and ~1-1/3rd second behind the early leader.

Dang- 2nd Buff (Zika) fell and is way out. (They unofficially showing him finishing but I don't know if he made all the gates or not. In either case, VERY far out or totally out, although if he DID (???) finish may still be able to earn a few points for the Buffs if he can complete his 2nd run.)

Main ranked competitors' results after the 1st run (what place they're in; DNF ='s Did not finish):
DU- 1-2-DNF,
Utah- 10-11-DNF
New Mexico- 16-20-21
Vermont- 3-12-19
Dartmouth- 8-9-22

(Just doing a rough and meaningless calculation- if those results held for the 2nd run, DU and the Buffs would be VERY close to a tie (maybe the Buffs up by 3 or so points), with the Utes also right there around 10-12 points back.)

Edit- Buff Adam Zika and a couple other skiers now showing as disqualified (I assume for missing gates), so please disregard all the above about hypothetical point totals as positions and associated points aren't accurate any more.

Edit 2- With Mr. Zika's DQ, the Buffs lose a hypothetical 6 points as he's no longer 25th. Therefore, in my meaningless hypothetical awarding of points after the 1st run of the Men's Giant Slalom, DU would be up by a few points over CU in the championship points race, with Utah just a few points behind the Buffs. Hopefully the two remaining Buffs will improve their positions in the 2nd run.

Buff HIETANEN, 17th after 1st run, completes his 2nd run- in 2nd so far (with 16 faster racers from 1st run still to go).

Buff Gunnarson finishes successfully, and is in 2nd with only 5 racers left. A couple Utes had good 2nd runs, so they may take over the overall championships point lead.

Buffs unofficially end up 7th and 16th. Wow- Middlebury (sp?) College ends up with great 1st and 3rd place finishes. DU with nice 2nd and 4th finishes; Utes with 6th and 8th place finishes which, if that holds, I'm guessing will give them a (pretty narrow) points leader after day 2, with the Buffs and DU CLOSE behind.

Official results to follow.
