Thought I'd start this thread to forward any news about and results in the 2 big indoor track and field meets taking place over the next 2 weekends.
_____________________________________________________________________

Yesterday through this Sunday are the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships, taking place in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Event homepage (***select direct links below) is at http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Indoor-Track---Field-Championships.aspx .
(*** selected direct links - Live results - http://results.usatf.org/2017Indoors/ ; Schedule of events - http://www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2017/USATF-Indoor-Track---Field-Championships/Schedule.aspx; description of video coverage - http://www.usatf.tv/gprofile.php?do...=25&year=2017&mgroup_id=45365&video_id=199734 )

Per the below IG from Buff Assistant Coach Lindsey Malone, 2 current and 2 (or maybe 1?) Buff alums are competing-

Current Buffs
1) Multi-event athlete (junior) Andrew Ghizzone’s indoor heptathlon competition actually started yesterday, and per Coach Malone, he’s sitting in 10th place. (I believe he typically gains ground in the 2nd day events, so interesting to see if he can move up by the end of today.)

2) Fellow junior Rajon O'Quinn is competing in 2 events, the 60M dash (heats Sunday at 2:14) and high jump (start Sunday at 3:30). Per some nice research by Coach Malone, Ms. O’Quinn’s double hasn’t been done at these championships in 71 years (see below tweet).

(She also has a more detailed IG Post in her account ( https://www.instagram.com/coachlmalonecu/) with much more detail.)

Buff Alum(s)
1) Sara Sutherland is competing in the 2 mile run, scheduled to start at 4:37 on Sunday.
2) Per Coach Malone’s IG, runner Sara Vaughn is also competing, but I don’t see her in the start lists. (In the “Status of Entries”, she is the one athlete who, for both the mile and 2 mile, is listed as accepted, but neither declared or scratched. If she IS running the 2 mile, the time is shown above. The mile is scheduled to start 6:04 on Saturday.)

I have now added live result, video and entry list/ heat sheets info to the bottom of the original post.

And at another NCAA Championships ..... Congrats to Mr. Saarel!

Edit- just saw his time. He's been close to getting the mythical sub- 4:00 mile for over a year, and JUST misses it (4:00.39) in the prelims. Hopefully in the final, which should be much quicker in general, the mark will/ should go down easily unless it turns into a "tactical" race.

Dani Jones makes up a 15-25 meter deficit behind the pack in the Distance Medley Relay at the start of her (final 1 mile***) leg and out-kicks some of the top runners in the country to get the Buff win!!!!
(No one talked about them being even a contender!)

***Edit - Correction- the final leg is actually 1600 meters, so not QUITE a mile.

Here's a 3 minute highlight of the women's DMR race.

The race included incredible 3rd and 4th legs by Sage Hurta (#1 time in leg) and Dani Jones (#2 time in leg). It looked like CU was in 12th (last place) when Hurta got the baton for the unbelievable third leg, and in 9th place when Jones got the baton for the anchor. Interestingly enough, Jones, edged out two of the best Colorado high school runners of all time - Elise Cranny and Katie Rainsberger - to win in the 1-2-3 finish for the Pac-12.

Take a look, it's definitely worth a watch, and the "Holy crap, Colorado!" call by the announcer is a classic.

Here's a 3 minute highlight of the women's DMR race. Holy crap, Dani Jones ran an unbelievable anchor leg, as CU was nowhere near the front (in 8th place) when she got the baton. Interestingly enough, she edged out two of the best ever Colorado high school runners - Elise Cranny and Katie Rainsberger - to win in the 1-2-3 finish for the Pac-12. Take a look, it's definitely worth a watch.

That was awesome! Dayamn.

The announcer call at the end has all the charm as Lindsey, Lindsey, LINDSEY!

Congrats for the natty, ladies!

Gotta watch that again.

"Holy crap. COLORADO! Wut?!?"

For real, the announcing at the end was hilarious. I was in the middle of going back and getting the quotes from the announcer, the split times, and editing my post when you nailed it.

I just watched with my kids and what a fun race. GO BUFFS!

Just to reset with the schedule for today's races, just copying what I quoted from the preview article (in post #4)-
"On Saturday, the men's and women's mile finals start at 3:00 p.m. MT and the Buffs will wrap up the weekend with the 3,000 meter finals at 5:00 p.m. MT."

I believe the only Buff qualifier in the mile was Ben Saarel.

There are MANY Buffs running in the 3K's. Joe Klecker will be racing for the 1st time in these championships, while Ben Saarel and John Dressel will be trying to run competitive doubles. On the women's side, Dani Jones will be coming back from her huge DMR anchor leg, and Erin Clark will be toeing the line for her only race this weekend after earning 1st Team All-American honors with a 5th place finish indoors at this distance in last year's indoor championships.

I hope, with the new IPF, that CU can rise in the T&F world to a national power. We can, now, start attracting speed athletes and field athletes. At least I hope.

The most fun in life was watching my kid in track and XC. I love the distance events and think they are way under appreciated. There is so much strategy and heart involved. There isn't anything in T&F as thrilling as a great kick at the end of a distance race. People have no clue how hard these young people work.

It seems to be helping that MacIntyre is very cooperative with his scholarship football players also competing in T&F. That gives our T&F program free scholarship athletes that can score for it in meets. Very big deal.

Congrats to Dani Jones!

In that same 3K race, Erin Clark earns a point with her 8th place finish.

Overall, the Buff women earn 21 points, which looks to have ended up giving them 7th place at the Championships. (http://www.ncaa.com/sites/default/files/external/track-field/results/d1/indoor17/scores.htm).

Also, looking at live results, Joe Klecker earns 1st Team All-American honors with a 4th place finish in the men's 3K, while John Dressel earns a point for his team finishing 8th, doubling up after his own 4th place finish in yesterday's 5K race. In the earlier mile, Ben Saarel earned a point with an 8th place finish.

Overall, the Buff men (12 points total) end up in a 5 team tie for 16th place.
