University of Utah = National Champion!

If you only took the conference champions then you wouldn't be putting the 8 best teams in the playoff. If they go to an 8-team playoff, the only way to do it would be to take the top 8 teams in the BCS standings or the top 8 picked by a committee, however you want to do. But it needs to be the top 8 regardless of conference affiliation, and this year that would've included 3 Big12 teams and none from either the Big East or ACC.

This is why the lower tiers pick 16 teams out of 60-70. The last time UNC won a real NC in '97 they played an all road game schedule to get to New Haven in the NC Game. UNC was up 45-0 by halftime. Even with committees its hard to assess who should be there and who shouldn't. UNC deserved at least one home game in that series.

If the lower tiers can take 16 teams from a smaller pool then the top division should also take 16.

Ps. I believe the Dolphins current head coach Tony Sparano was the New Haven head coach at the time.
