so some of you guys are going to have to refresh my memory. Obviously Dufault was decent on offensive his senior year. He started to show some post moves you would expect from a 6'9" player. It sounds like Scott can come in and match his 11 ppg production on offense. But for the life of me, I can't remember how good Dufault was on defense? Does anyone else remember?
I am expecting Scott to struggle initially defensively, but I think Dufault struggled at times last year as well.
If Scott is only "replacing" Austin's production, rather than surpassing it, then we have a problem.
really even in his freshman year versus Dufault's senior year?
We can probably get by with an 11.1 ppg average from Scott. But he needs to be more efficient than 48% from the field while delivering more than 4 rpg and only 9 blocked shots on the season.
If Scott can come in and score 11/night, with the guys that are returning, plus some scoring that is coming in, I think that should be sufficient.
I'm concerned that there may not be enough minutes to go around with this team. Not a bad problem to have, but a problem just the same.
I would say expectations are higher than that. Certain aspects of his game, certainly, will be lacking, but his offensive skills are supposed to add a different dimension to our play.
Even un-polished on the defensive end, and with Gordon and Dre competing with him for boards, he should easily surpass 4 rpg.
I absolutely agree he should have more blocks, steals and rebounds than Dufault, but I am trying to be cautiously optomistic. Anthony Davis averaged 14.2 ppg last year and he went off as the #1 draft pick. Now you can argue that Kentucky had much more talent so he had to shoot less (and he did shoot 62%), but I think if he gets anywhere near 15ppg that would be amazing, as long as he shoots over 55%.
One of the best things that Scott does for our offense is that he forces the opposing team's best post defender to guard a man as his primary responsibility instead of cheating to help when they go zone. Our struggles against zone were largely due to the other team being able to largely ignore our post-up options.
that is a great point, when our guards now slash, they can key on the defender on Scott:
if they collapse pass the ball to Scott
if he stick on Scott then drive to the hoop.
Dufault was never about to become an above average defender because of his lack of athleticism. He kept us in the game by being intelligent in the pick and roll. It will take Scott some time to adjust, but almost immediately his man on man defense should be superior.
Which should be huge with the way Ski loves to drive to the hoop (even if it is against two guys in the paint twice his height).
I'd be giddy if Scott gives the team 12 pts, 6 boards, and 1-2 blocks per game. The inside presence alone is gonna help Dre on both ends of the floor.
Scott is a completely different player than Dufault. Dufault worked his ass off on defense because he had to, he was physically overmatched as a "center". Austin was more of a stretch 4, who added some of a post game as we needed him to. Scott is going to come in and plant himself on the block and force defenses to focus on him completely different than dufault.
Want to hear a good joke? Scott giving us only 4 boards avg this year
I am no where near the level of basketball expertise that some on this board have. Having said that, is there any chance Scott steals enough points and boards from Dre that Dre stays for another year?
I don't think that would happen, since Dre just has a way of getting rebounds. He had 20 the 1st game in france, versus an NBA player. He is an elite rebounder, so he will get his stats. The best case scenario of him staying IMO would be us going very deep in the tourney (elite 8 or so) and getting another outstanding freshman class. He might stay if he thinks he can win at all, which is very special, but that also depends on where he is projected and how deep the draft is again.
Think you're right, just wishful thinking on my part. It is fricking fantastic to follow this team.
Just moved in today and met the basketball team they are a floor above my buddy. Guys are chill and damn do they look athletic. Its really nice to root for a very likable group!
