Who would you hire and why?

a football coach

Too bad Shanny is closer to retirement than anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets fired at the end of this season. Would have worked great a few years ago when he was on the market the first time. Too bad we didn't have any cash or a Global Express too woo him with back then.

Too bad Lombardi is dead, too. I think he could have gotten us to six wins with no excuses, or at least beat Sacramento State.

This is where we disagree. There's nothing in the history of our program to suggest that we'll pay the market for top coaching prospects (although we may pay less for average coaches). Given our terribly outdated facilities, contentious budget climate for education in Colorado, and really money strapped surrounding university, I think the next coach will likely get closer to $1.5mm and the staff keep their salaries similar. That $1mm difference in per year salary is substantial. In the article, when you sort the staffs below $4mm, you really see spotty results from those teams.

BTW, the quotation from the article is from an AD at a school (Ole Miss) who cares about football on the larger campus. I agree that all universities with access to big time football should think that way. But, our university is unique. Just because we will have the money does not imply that we will spend it on football coach salaries to lock in top notch coaching. This is why I keep harping on the fact that you haven't given any argument that would suggest that the University of Colorado higher ups will switch their philosophy on this matter. I think the evidence is to the contrary.

Because McCartney, Barnett, Slick, and Hawkins were all terribly under paid, right? I'd wager that all of them were paid at least market for the time. The AD is not money strapped at all and I don't really believe CU is all that money strapped seeing as how much construction is always going on.

Wainaminnit. Did you listen to DiStephano's state if the campus speach? He said funding was a huge issue.

Not sure for certain, but Fairbanks had a great run down in Norman, and then jumped to the league (NE Pats). I guess he thot taking a step back would be an easier gig, and he then tried to changed a bunch of things (like going to powder blue uni's). He didn't work, and nothing he tried worked -- kinda goes hand in hand.

I still don't know why Crowder got rid of Bill Mallory.

Crowder fired Mallory for the same reason Bohn fired Barnett. We expected better than perpetual mediocrity.

Shawn Watson. Just saying given the chance he will do a great job. Auburn will get him if someone else doesn't first.

I want someone from the Synder coaching tree. Mangino and Stoops are both damn good coaches and knew how to run a program (that is, until Mangino roughed up a player after hearing a rumor that he ate his cupcake).

Give the OC or DC at KSU this year.

Dave Logan.

Seeing as no one will bite on that one, why doesn't Bud Foster at VT get any love? He consistently coaches talent up, year after year after year.

Virginia has marginally more talent than we do, but not by a lot.

Foster would run the D, and hopefully bring in people who know what they are doing on O because we have looked like pure dog**** other than today.

Other names to consider, Chad Morris (OC for Clemson). And dare I say.... Lane Kiffin if USC cans him

I really want to believe this statement, but I cannot.

Has Phil Fulmer been mentioned? I think he would be a great fit here. I think his tough style of football would contrast very well in the Pac 12.

It says in his Wiki that he believes he will coach again, but he will only go to a school that is committed to winning. I guess that excludes us. **** it.

Please. No. There's a reason the "Fulmer cup" exists. You think **** has hit the fan yet? Wait until we get a bunch of felons on the team.

I don't give a flying **** about felons. If they can play and Fulmer can coach that will lead to winning. Mac had quite a few questionable characters on his teams(although he did a pretty good job of corralling them) and that turned out okay.

That was in a day without the media scrutiny that we have today. SI ran a story about the early 90s team. You think after the Knida allegations the admin would even approach a guy like Fulmer?

I would say they won't approach him because they're not serious about winning. Also the Fulmer Cup stuff only happened in a few years. Yeah there were some bad apples, but the majority of the sh!t happened in two or three seasons and he coached for a long time. It's not like our reputation isn't taking a hit right now anyways. I just want to win dammit.

The sad thing is... Compare all the thought, time and effort all of us put into this site and compare it to the total lack of care and effort put in by CU's admin. I've felt my love for CU football slip into a bad one-sided relationship. I'm tired of giving so much and receiving so little. It's time for a break. I need to see other football programs. I just don't know what else to say... I wish it were different. Goodbye.

Pretty sure we don't need to argue about Fulmer, Petrino, Butch Davis, Tressel, Barney, Mike Price, Mike Leach, or Mangino. The school isn't going to hire any of them.

As the eternal optimist I had hoped the JE/EB/GB situation would work out, but it obviously needs to end. The search for the next head coach always brings about the questioning of the decision. Will the guy hired end up like A) or end up like B):

Choose a head coach from a lower tier school? Do you get the next Jim Tressel or next Dan HaLkins.
Hire a coach who has already has BCS experience? Do you get a Les Miles or Tyrone Willingham
Hire a BCS level coordinator? Do you get Bob Stoops or Mike Stoops.
Hire a non BCS level coordinator? (I couldn’t think of any examples off the top of my head)
Hire a former NFL head coach? Do you get Pete Carroll or Bill Callahan?
Hire an NFL coordinator? Do you get ___ Greg Robinson/Steve Fairchild/Charlie Weiss (actually the more I think about this they all suck and I can’t think of one success)?
In every scenario there are examples of success and failure. One thing is apparent; it is not just the head coach who is hired, but the staff that he brings with him.

HC: Justin Wilcox
OC: Steve Farmer – University of Louisiana Monroe OC/assist HC/OL coach
DC: Dave Aranda – Utah State DC

I would like this setup as Framer’s offenses have proven to be effective and he uses quite a bit of ingenuity. He can get lesser talent to compete/score against better talent, and we are going to need that

Aranda has been DC and Hawaii as well as Utah State, and I would assume Wilcox would be assisting on the D side as well. The hope would be the combination of the two would help lead to success.

If I'm building a realistic staff mine would look something like this:

HC-Sonny Dykes-Pac ties, big ties to TX, LA, SEC connections, offensive guru.
OC-Hal Mumme-one person who Dykes learned from, air raid damn near originator, coaching at McMurry currently as a HC (would likely leave), TX/LA, SEC connections
OL-assuming Alex Gibbs won't come out of retirement...Juan Castillo if he would come. Pete Perot, Dykes's current OL coach would be good and knows his offense. Walt Wells from WKU would be my fallback.
TE-I don't know. Maybe Nord at UK, but preferably someone from a program out west. Kenni Burns from NDSU could be good.
WR-let Dykes bring in his at LA Tech. They seem to be doing just fine.
QB coach-Bruce Rollinson (huge Cali connetions http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/highschool/08/21/bruce-rollinson-mater-dei/index.html) or James Killian at Tulsa (he did great work at Del City H.S. in Oklahoma and got promoted quickly to Tulsa qb coach, then LSU offensive quality control.), or LA Tech's qb coach
DC-Top two are maybe a reach, but Mike Singletary is my top pick and Gary Gibbs (TX/LA/OK connections) if KC Chiefs staff is fired...DeWayne Walker would be exciting. If neither are plausible, I'd fall back on Wallerstedt (LB coach at TAMU)
LB coach-Tyrone Nix-former dcoordinator at South Carolina and Ole Miss, now DC at MTSU
Secondary-Bobby Hauck. He's as good as gone at UNLV and has west coast connections.
DLine-Tui-recruiting connections/PAC connections.
Strength and Conditioning:I don't know, but we need a good one.

I think HCSD is going to get his crack to turn around a program in the SEC (maybe more than one school will offer him). Kentucky is the one that comes to mind most quickly, especially since Tennessee may be leery after their soon to be fired coach (HCDD) was at Louisiana Tech before. As we have seen, folks in SEC country care a lot about football. They will pay him $500K more per year than we will, his assistants will get more dough, and the admissions standards will be much more relaxed. I really think our focus needs to be on someone with executive level (HC) experience who can recruit and develop VG players here out west.

General consensus on our boards is you guys should hire Pat Hill...man could recruit like a mofo and you have the resources to get him good coordinators.

I always liked Pat Hill. I just don't know about him as a recruiter if he can't hit the JUCOs. He lived on that at FSU and he might only be able to land 1 or 2 a year at CU.

I see what you mean, but....
To clarify further, Hill wasn't just a great recruiter...he was a great judge of talent. He had a knack for finding under-recruited guys that blossomed into great college guys, and often even into NFL players. Go check out the recruiting grades for Phillip Thomas, the guy who had three INTS against you and leads the nation in that category. Hell, go look at Davante Adams, who had only one other offer besides us and is already a top 10 WR in his freshman year.

The problem with Hill was that when it came to X's and O's he just wasn't up to the task, which is why Fresno State's fortunes depended on the coordinators we gave him (who were always getting hired away). If you guys could surround him with a solid staff- and I think you could - you'd have success.
