Does that excuse the offense and Sefo not doing anything to force Arizona to pass the ball by getting a series going?

Sefo health update

Probably 10+ players on the team, offense, defense, or special teams, could have stepped up, made a play and won that game.
Instead, they all turtled.
Including Sefo.
Singling him out seems unfair, especially when other players had the same opportunity to shine, but instead **** the bed; however, in every single one of our close losses over the past 3 years, Sefo had a chance to make some plays and win it, but he never did.
With other players, they had the chance to do that in some games, but not every single one.
That said, in almost all of those close losses, "the defense" as a whole had a chance to win it in the last 5 minutes too.
I have little faith in Sefo becoming a clutch player this year, but I can see the defense turning the corner. If that happens, we'll pick up 25-50% of the close games - and go to a bowl game.
Maybe the way to think about it isn't that MM has gone "all in" on Sefo, but that he's gone "all in" on his defense.
In theory, the defense is a year ahead of the offense on its rebuilding project. So I agree that this next year could be the year someone on that side steps up for a change and makes a difference in a game. Here's to hoping.
We have a team full of 'the wrong guy'.
Your QB needs to win a couple games a year if you're going to win 10-12 games. If all you're trying to pull off is 6 wins, he can be a game manager. JHMO.
I think it applies to most teams, but the debate mostly misses the point. The CU offense does not really allow for the QB to be merely a game manager, does it?

I love how people compare how a player played in a Freshman year that he should have redshirted to his coming Senior year. He has grown in physical, mental and emotional stature throughout the years. This Sefo is one we have yet to see. Hold your hats and get ready for some fun in 2016!
The defense was much improved in 2015, but not Laufau. That correlation proved to be false.

Lisfrancly speaking there is a fracture in fan expectations. It's corny to say this, but if Sefo can't plantar his feet without pain, we may arch an other offseason without a bowl game. But if he's heeled, Sefo can blister the opposing defenses. I'm Scholl that no matter what happens the optimists will see 2016 as a step in the right direction.

I think we all owe a big round of applause to our newest and bestest buddy, and big toe, Sargent Skiddy.
It can, if the defense can keep the opponent to 20 points or less. A game manager can generate three touchdowns against most teams. Will the defense make that next step? I think it's possible.

Nope, referring in general to the statement that "your QB needs to win a couple of games." The perceived ability of a QB is usually directly tied to the ability of the rest of the team. The outliers are where that doesn't happen. Great QB's can elevate a mediocre team, great teams can make up for a mediocre QB. Unfortunately the number of great QB's is limited and in college almost always non-existent. There are only about 2 or 3 teams in college I would call great any given year. So what you have left is trying to find a QB that plays within his team and makes them better. He doesn't have to be great, and certainly doesn't have to win a couple of games on his own. A good game manager can motivate his team, make reads, and get the ball to his playmakers.
Bama usually wins the natty when their QB is not a game manager though.
I'd say they win the natty when their QB executes their scheme very well. Which can be attributed to some as a "game manager".
We can just acknowledge Bama is a very special case regardless. Team is stacked up and down the roster.
I think that being a "game manager" is a vital skill for a QB. In fact, my criticisms of Sefo have often revolved around him not being a very good game manager in the past. Making mistakes at critical moments, not knowing when to fight for that extra yard on a scramble, not speeding up the time to get plays off when time is running low, etc. It's game management acumen I'm counting on from him this season in order for it to be successful.
One I just hope he's healthy, productive all year. I hope he doesn't step on his dick at the worst possible times like we've seen for several years. I genuinely like him as a leader and person, that's a given. At some point though, his play has to do the talking. If it does, we'll go to a bowl I'd think.

Not to make any excuses for Sefo as he should certainly in part be held accountable for all the close losses over the last 2 seasons but I think the biggest thing that will make Sefo better this year is Chev. In my estimation Lindgren is a crappy play caller. Seems like the offense on too many occasions has no rhythm and gets bogged down by play calling that doesn't highlight their best assets. For example, there were many injuries and shuffling of positions within the offensive line in 2015. So therefore we needed to compensate but instead Lindgren has Sefo taking 5-7 step drops and throwing posts, post corners and fades way too often. We needed to be in quick 3 step drops and focusing on getting the ball out as quick as possible. That is something the air raid offense is very good at is getting the ball released very quickly. I believe Chev will fix that. The other thing I saw that I hope gets fixed is far too many read option plays. That play simply doesn't work as CU does not have the personnel to execute it. Instead of adjusting Lindgren continued to run it. And it continued to go nowhere. However when Sefo was under center and they ran off-tackle with Lindsey or Carr they usually picked up nice chunks of yards. But they failed to run enough off tackle plays which is confusing since it worked so well. I know they like to run different things off the zone read and that is why they do it so often but it needed to be scratched once Irwin got hurt and switched to a more traditional approach. I say all that to say this: Sefo will benefit greatly from a better offensive game-plan and calling of those plays on Saturday. (I know Lindgren will be calling the actual plays but Chev will be in his ear the whole time). Watch for quick hitters to Fields, Winfree, Lee and CO. in open space and them picking up lots of YAC. If healthy I believe this will be Sefo's best year in terms of wins and stats.
Idk how he's gonna do but the killer turnovers gotta go. I'm hoping for a lot of slants etc. If the timing is right, it's a hard route to cover. Plus it'll open up deeper routes, which we know he struggles with so hope he's better with that.

Some of those zone reads, he wasn't reading jack. He was meant to keep it. They did run some though. Some were just a give.

It is a rare thing to see Sefo throw the slant.
He somehow threw a lot of picks on the slant (on a per pass basis) his first season and a half - Lindgren noticed and quit calling them.
if I am remembering correctly, Sefo had a tendency to through them high. Causing quite a few to bounce off a receivers hands to a DB, or just sail over a WR and get caught by the defense.
Other than slants, bubble screens, secondary receivers, and any throws to the left side of the field he has this thing locked in.
