Simple reality check here: ask yourself if ASU or Washington or UCLA would reasonably hire him for the same position.
The answer to that weeds out 90% of the alum & in-house names that come up.
(fwiw, the answer on Chev was "yes".)
Not promoting Tumpkin could lead to a tenuous situation. I'd think Tumpkin's goal is to move to a coordinator position. As a matter of fact, I'd bet he came here believing he was next in line. If we go a different rout, I think Tumpkin would look elsewhere. If that were to happen, I'd begin to get worried.

Not disagreeing with the general sentiment about not just hiring in-house or alums, but not sure the Washington's or UCLA's of the world would have hired Chev at a coordinator level. Like anything, there will be some outliers.
Vance Joseph is the only former Buff suggestion that would make any sense.
Would it have been reasonable for them to hire an assistant coach & Recruiting Coordinator from the nation's #1 offense as a Co-OC & Recruiting Coordinator who won't call plays? Yes. Absolutely.

Sure. If you think going outside will be an overall improvement, then do it. But you need to factor in all of those other things. A new guy may want to bring in on or two of his own assistants, although I don't think that happens much at the coordinator level.
Think Tumpkin definitely has the inside track to this job, but I really want HCMM to do a thorough search. Don't just hand it to JT because it is easiest.

I have a new name to add to the mix- Ed Pinkham. If you don't know who he is definitely worth a search.
I wouldn't mind MM promoting Tumpkin either. He's done a good job recruiting and coaching the DB's plus he's been a DC before.
Tim DeRuyter is another name I like. Former HC, knows the recruiting footprint of CU.

And his defense has actually started to perform at a decent level. He isn't going anywhere.

^^^^ this. Tumpkin deserves to be a candidate, but shouldn't be handed this. I'd like to have this search completed by the end of the year. This person doesn't necessarily need to be in place by the bowl game......which might make a good audition for Tumpkin.
Well if you think coaching is important, you wouldn't mention those names in conjunction with a DC position. Maybe not a position coach spot either.
Had to google him. Another Utah State connection. Along with Clune and Orlando. Dave Aranda...
This guy would be best with a LB coach as co DC, coaching up the DL and recruiting the Poly world.

I think what makes me madder is Oregon going completely nuts. JL will be the second highest paid assistant in all of college football. They paid Hoke just north of $400K. Now they're more than tripling that to get JL. They are not setting a good precedent here. As this money war grows, I get a bit more disenchanted with college football.

I would rather see a lights out recruiter who has a rudimentary understanding of defense.
Maybe he can make a lathe out of raw materials.

I love this tidbit. I think tackling/targeting/hitting is the fundamental that is going to change the game the most over the next decade. Just as eliminating chop blocks changed how teams run the ball, and limiting contact by DBs on WRs lead to the proliferation of the spread offense, I think effective defense is going to have to adjust to making effective tackles and getting away from going for splashy violent hits. If there's anyone well suited to adapt to that change, it seems like Seto would be an ideal candidate.

Only slight crack in this argument is continuity with recruiting, but you'd hope a strong DC hire would be able to keep recruits who were sold on CU as the whole package.
Anyone else having deja-vu form the post-Embree search? Looking forward to getting some scoop from guys like Adam on legitimate options.
Of the top 36 guys on that list, 1 is a Pac-12 guy and it's Adrian fricking Klemm.

Reading some posts on Scout and here, and winning brings out new fans for sure!
The best aspect of our defense this season was how incredibly good we were at tackling. It was really a joy to watch, especially compared to the other teams we played and in fact was the reason we were a good defensive unit. The X's and O's were good to be sure, but I'm not convinced that they were so much better than any other teams X's and O's.
I'm sure that our staff taught tackling as well as anyone and I'm for any coach that stresses fundamentals and teaches them as well as this staff did.
The more I think about losing JL the more I think about HCMM's teams at SJSU and when I watched them play, I was impressed with their fundamentals as well. I'm wondering if this isn't just part of HCMM's philosophy and will translate to whoever is our DC next year.
