CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

For basketball, the goal is to make the Big XII even stronger so that their next deal (only a few years from now - they signed a short one) is more lucrative. Especially since Yormark has repeatedly said he wants to decouple the football and basketball contracts. He thinks there's more money to be made out of basketball, and he wants the Big XII to come out on top in that regard.
De-coupling football from the rest makes sense. No reason that conferences couldn't do Big East type deals for Basketball + Tier 3 (Olympic) rights separate from them Football deal. I think that leads to more value since everything seems like an insignificant throw-in when packaged with Football.

The only major team(s) in an area will get more sports entertainment consumer attention than an equivalent team from out of market.

I thought that was a basic fact we would all agree on, but apparently not.

Anyway, UConn is actually in New England but with a lot of people who work in NYC or moved from there. It's also home base for ESPN. It's a much better bet for bringing value to a P5 conference than at least half of the current ACC.
UConn is not a “major” team and is not the “only” team in that area and certainly isn’t the “only major” team in NE.

The home base for ESPN angle seems irrelevant. They’re not some regional media company who is all cozy with UConn athletics based on geographic convenience.

I guess the question is how much of the NYC market pays attention to UConn? If they get 5% of viewership in that market I’d be shocked and is that enough to justify adding them? The answer must be yes but I’d love to see the math.

Since Tad and CU have been mediocre at best during their time in the Pac 12, I can’t imagine the thought is much different. Does the Big 12 being the elite hoops conference make CU more attractive for recruiting like the SEC does for football?
Only mediocre if you’re not comparing it relative to the history of CU basketball. Measuring against what’s been normal for this program it’s probably been the single most prosperous era in the history of the program. Colorado has occasionally had a couple of tournament bids over the span of 5 years when they’ve had top talent (Chauncey, Harrison, etc) but to my knowledge they’ve never been a roughly 50% bid receiver over a 10+ years like this. And the immediate future definitely looks brighter than the recent past right now.

I know we’re all on here because of football, but I’d love it if the basketball program could become a perennial top 25 performer. I wouldn’t ever bet against Prime, but even if he exceeds every unreasonable expectation placed on him I think it’s much more likely that CU sees a final 4 in basketball before it sees a trip to the semis of the championship playoff.

Obviously I’ll take both though 🙂

Maybe a little but the SEC also dominates football recruiting partially because they’re located in a talent rich region of the country. That dynamic doesn’t matter as much in hoops - the Dukes, Kentuckys, Kansas’, and UConn’s of the basketball world don’t just rely on local talent. So CU basketball still is what it was just now in a league that would be even harder to win.

It also helps being ESPN's house league for football. The constant SEC is the best propaganda eventually became a self-fulfilling prophecy./

Interesting news regarding AAU status since it relevant as to appeal of a school for realignment, particularly for the B1G. Six new schools were admitted to the AAU, including ASU, Notre Dame, and Miami. Really improves ASU's profile as a B1G candidate, though they've looked like an AAU school for a while now in terms of sheer research volume.

B1G development. That could lead to a B1G-PAC merger without Oregon State & WSU. I wonder if this could delay the announcement of CU going to the B12.

With Miami getting AAU status, they become a future package deal with GT and definitely UNC & UVA going to the B1G.

South Florida was added to that AAU list too. B12 or ACC looks to be in its future given they build the new on-campus stadium. They are close to getting going on that project.

Do not be shocked if an Ivy or two or three joins the new PAC. This was brought up by my Oregon guy who said there are interest in east coast schools with elite academics.

Your source is highly questionable. That shows an incredible lack of understanding. Any of the Ivy’s leaving the Ivy League would be the most shocking event in college football. They dont offer sports scholarships yet suddenly they will to be in the Pac? Those schools dont need exposure to get students and never have.

😂😂😂

If they are in a P5, they're a major team.

They're already the college basketball team in the region for both men's and women's.

Regarding the numbers, as you said they must be there or this wouldn't be a conversation.

Plus the state built a 40,000 seat for UConn football in hopes of luring the Patriots there. The state could step in again to renovate the stadium and upgrade it.

UConn is a solid school. It’s a state flagship. Mbb. An area that hasn’t had a great college football team since Syracuse in the 90s.

My issue with them is how much would they fund FB. They have stadium issues. Obviously playing them now doesn’t produce an exciting matchup but w/ funding that could change and their valuation could change. But to start they wouldn’t drive a whole lot of viewers imho.

With a full Big 12 paycheck, it would be a big upgrade over what they earn from the Big East so they surely would be able to get a loan or sell bonds to fund a major renovation at that football stadium perhaps even after upgrading the football coaching staff.

The improved prestige of teams that would come to that stadium should improve football attendance.

Have to agree here. Ivy League. Service academies. I’m sure the P12 has looked at all of these options and more just to check the box but it doesn’t make sense.

I’m sure they also looked at UConn and now USF with them becoming AAU. Neither UConn or USF are immediate, out of the box good options. Down the road, maybe but idk if the P12 is patient enough to wait for it.

This changes my perspective on the potential move a bit:

The Big 12 wants them. They’d have the support of ESPN and Fox as full-share members. There’s no early exit fee.
The article wasn’t clear. There’s no exit fee for leaving the P12. The B12 exit fee would still apply if we join.

There's a great case for a conference of academic heavyweights that don't really want to play big boy football with the investments and compromises that are now required.

Stanford and Cal could lead a new national conference that included Rice, Tulane, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and the 3 service academies of Army, Navy and Air Force.

That's a 12-team national conference which covers some of the largest markets with likeminded universities.

It won't happen, but it should.

Stanford and Cal would both love that, but ya, there's no incentive for Northwestern or Vandy to leave the money of the B1G/ SEC.

CU going to the Big XII is going to be bad for men's hoops. Very bad.

If we’re being honest about it, it’ll be near impossible to win a conference title there. We’d have to step it up a notch the likes of which we’ve never seen and invest in mbb big time. Would love to see that kind of investment but nothing tells me we’d actually do that.

what does a travel partner even mean? are CU and byu like actually sharing flights and such?

"hey man, try a hit of this."

"no, thank you, kind sir. it would be a violation of my code of conduct."

"dude, just one little puff won't hurt."

"well, if you insist."

REEFER MADNESS ENSUES.

or perhaps on a flight shared by the women's bb teams...

oh, never mind. the scenes write themselves...

They’re not in the P5. Just inviting a school to join your conference doesn’t make them a major team. Hell there are programs currently in the P5 I wouldn’t consider major teams (Wazzu, Vandy, etc.)

And they are one major bball team in the area, not the only one. Schools like Syracuse, Villanova, Maryland, and even St. John’s all attract fans in that area. UConn is not dominating the NYC tv market.

Only in the same way going to the B1G or SEC would be bad for CU football. I’m all on board with MBB fans being happy with the program under Tad relative to the program success as a whole, but is what we’ve seen over the past few years from the program really what gets you excited?

I’m just a passive hoops guy, but everything I read here always seems be, “wait til next year!”.

Travel partners in terms of being able to play multiple schools on a single road trip. CU can play Cal and Stanford on a single road trip without having to get on an airplane between games. Not sure CU/ Utah offer the same sort of advantage.
