2023-24 Coaching Carousel (Fitzgerald out, DC Braun interim at Northwestern)

New Wyoming HC played at D3 Mount Union just like ISU's Campbell. Also a long time assistant under Jerry Kill. Solid hire imo.

Wyoming coach Bohl retiring after bowl game

Wyoming coach Craig Bohl, who won three FCS national titles at North Dakota State and led the Cowboys to a record six bowl appearances, will retire following the Arizona Bowl.

It doesn't look like that big of a transition from Calhoun's AFA offenses to a Willie Fitz type of offense.

Right now the service academies are at a disadvantage when it comes to NIL because the cadets are technically federal employees and there are restrictions on accepting gifts. That is why Calhoun might be looking elsewhere.
 
The top choices for Tulane-
1a. Jon Sumrall - HC Troy
1b. Alex Atkins - FSU OC

Calhoun only becomes a legitimate option if they both turn down the job, which is possible.

Yes and they should have hired Calhoun. They love that option so much (their fans) and I think Calhoun would have them very competitive quickly. He's a way better coach than I think we give credit for and the move into the mainstream I believe would be handled with ease. He's adapted his system thru tons of assistant coaching changes, player/personnel changes etc. He will win everywhere.

If he was going to leave, he should have done it sooner. I used to say it was ridiculous to write someone off as a triple option guy when he was OC/QB at Ohio, Wake and the NFL before taking the AFA HC job. That's just a football coach adapting to what can win where he's at. But after 15+ years at AFA, to me he now owns the label of triple option guy unfamiliar with the type of recruiting and program management that's done everywhere except service academies.

Agree except on the last line. He's a head coach that has adapted. Recruiting is different, and somewhat risky that he may not be able to do that, but a University can build in some support to help that out. Bottom line is that a whole lot of places have head coaches building good programs that don't seem like great recruiters. Calhoun has won so many games with less talent that it just doesn't feel all that risky. Someplace will hire him and then go 10-2 a few years later without "great recruiting" and then their recruiting will improve.

I stick by what I said, but if he went to a new school I would bet on him maintaining or elevating success there. He's a good enough coach that I believe he'd figure it out and be better than most at overcoming program limitations. Thinking of Jerry Kill and I believe Calhoun is better than him.

I'm not floored to hear he's flirting with Tulane. My brother in laws father has had season tickets down there for years, and we tailgate with them when we go. Some people down there think a new voice as the head coach wouldn't be bad.

I like Calhoun, and I think that staff is unreal good. I get the frustration though, especially with the way this year turned out. I don't think he leaves for Tulane, but you never know. If he does move, Air Force would probably promote Mike Thiessen within a day. Another former Falcon QB who has been on staff there forever. I think longest tenured OC in America.
