Before anyone gets too excited... Brandon Smith has not asked for or been released from Michigan yet.

That said, there is a new article on Michigan's Rivals site (LINK) in which they report that it could go either way:

Smith missed the team's last meeting, leading Rodriguez to assume he's leaving the team. His mother responded "you'll have to ask Brandon about that" when reached for comment, seemingly confirming Rodriguez's comments to the Detroit Free Press that she'd like him to stay.

As far as how CU potentially fits in on this one:

    - Paul Vigo was HS teammates with Brandon Smith in the same class
    - CU recruited Brandon hard and received an official visit

Also, while Brandon is a Safety, there is a lot of talk that his better position would be OLB after adding 15 pounds to his frame. The thinking is that he'd go from being a big Safety who is maybe a bit on the slow side to a fast linebacker with prototypical weakside OLB size. ESPN actually suggested that change back in 2008, thinking he was a tweener who would eventually end up at linebacker.

I know we recruited out of HS but other than that is there any reason to believe he'd end up at CU?

If he leaves Michigan (which looks likely), I believe we're in excellent shape.

The kids can talk all they want as long as they are not representing the university or speaking for the university. There would be no way to control phone calls and text messages between guys who know each other from HS or from the all-star games, etc.

There would be a way, but the NCAA decided they don't want to **** the student athletes up the ass all the time, only most of the time.

Players and even average everyday people who knew each other before the player was recruited or signed an LOI anywhere can speak/text/email whenever they want. If you live next door to Mike Bohn, or Matt Barkley for that matter, went to high school with a guy, you are allowed to continue the relationship as you see fit. Teachers, neighbors, friends, family and friends of family can continue to have contact with players.

That'd be great if Smith transfers here...imagine that. I remember I wanted Clemons and Smith really bad in that draft class, and here we are two years later with Clemons with the potential to get Smith and Zion. Hopefully...but not holding my breath.

Too ****ing late. This is the kind of guy our defense has been missing for the last half-decade. A big fast safety or a OLB who can stick with a TE or slot receiver in coverage.

    COME TO BOULDER BRANDON! :smile2:

    Not an issue, right?

Bret's a senior in 2010 and Brandon would be sitting out for his transfer requirement.

Well, I'm glad you have the jersey number solved. I was getting nervous, but I figured you two could come up with a plan.

So what you're saying is that cheerleaders going down the road for the school is a violation, but a player doesn't necessarily represent? Sounds like a freebie to USC and violation for us.

There's also a chance that he has been given permission to talk to other coaches just like CU released Darrell Scott to do that. Heck, for all we know, he's filed his paperwork and the entire conversation is moot.

No, I said if the player knew someone BEFORE he was a recruit, they can jointly maintain the relationship.

    Here's the CU compliance version:

Players who know each other can maintain that friendship, whether they met at a Nike Combine, went to high school together or another way. A current player should not "cold call" a recruit who he has never met, but if they have already established an acquaintance, they can stay in contact.

All I'm saying is it's iffy, and we haven't fared too well on those iffy violations, like a few meals, for instance.

I'm still very hopeful that Brandon becomes a Buff.

Brandon Smith has been given his transfer paperwork. It took some hunting, but I finally found a Michigan football blog that reported on it:

    http://mbighouse.blogspot.com/2009/12/michigan-monday-transfers-recruiting.html

Michigan Monday: Transfers, Recruiting and No Bowl Game
In a day where Michigan doesn't hear it's name mentioned for a Bowl Game they get even more bad news regarding a transfer and yes, it's on Defense. Brandon Smith has received his transfer paperwork. A highly rated guy in the hybrid class of 2008 (between Carr and RR) will look to suit up for another team in 2010 or 2011.

This isn't the greatest news for of the Wolverines defense in desperate need of depth at Safety and Linebacker. Smith was brought in to play Safety but was too big and wasn't fast enough. So he was quickly moved to Linebacker. He did see some time late in the year, but it was clear he wasn't ready for that position yet. He did play on special teams and made a number of good tackles on kick off coverage He shared his #4 with Brandon Minor. So I'm sure there were a number of folks this year wondering what Minor was doing on kick off coverage.

BHB Perspective: I'm a fan of Brandon Smith's and hope he finds what he is looking for. The problem at Michigan was he just didn't really fit either the Safety or LB role. My hope was that he would have stuck it out and really learned how to be a good linebacker. I watch guys like David Harris on Sunday's and had hopes that he would become a similar player. If he had stayed, studied, and put on some weight, he could have.

I think it's hard for some kids to change positions and wait their turn. It's clear there is a ton of "mental" work that goes into being a linebacker in any defense in D1. If you miss a gap or a coverage it's a very quick 6. We saw that in every game this year for the Wolverines. So Brandon wasn't mentally ready for that position and probably wasn't big enough yet either.
It's just too bad when the program loses an athlete like Brandon Smith.

I'm a little confused here. The kid's vitals list a 4.5 40 yet the blogger says he wasn't fast enough to be a safety.

I don't know that he's quite as fast as reported. Vigo is supposedly faster based on comparisons when they were in high school together. He was also listed as a 4.5 in his ratings.

That said, even if he runs a 4.7 he's fast enough to play Safety and play it well. But I'd rather have a fast linebacker who is maybe a bit small over a big safety who is maybe a bit slow.

Playing a 3/4 (assuming we stick with it this year), it would be really nice to have a LB or two on the strong side who can run with most TE's and maybe even some slot receivers with help over the top.

Brandon Smith accepted an offer to transfer to Temple.

Reported yesterday in the Philadelphia Daily News:

Sources confirmed a report on OwlScoop.com that Temple's football program added two transfers to this year's recruiting class: Brandon Smith, a former Michigan linebacker, and Rod Streater, a wide receiver from Alfred (N.Y.) State junior college.
