Berkeley Hotels

Just trying to help someone out get a full idea of what it would be like staying there for a game. No need to get defensive.

That "full idea" of yours is half-assed.

Yes...it's far from BART. But a taxi can take you to Embarcadero easy enough.

While bagging on the tourists buying chocolate, you kinda missed the part where there is an incredible view of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge a few yards away. And there are a bunch of sea food establishments within an easy walk. Plus there is an In-N-Out down a few blocks. It's SFO tourist heaven.

The hotel has an outdoor fire pit above the tourist fray, and is a pleasant place to drink wine, chill out, and completely escape the football environment for the gratuitous SFO tourist thang.

I'm not saying it is not a nice hotel. Every Fairmont I have ever stayed in has been great but I just don't think it is a great location for the game or San Fran in general. I would say go to the golden gate bridge or Alcatraz if you want to get a great view.

I tend to avoid the over crowded tourist areas. So like I wouldn't stay in times square or fisherman's wharf, I would stay on Miami beach and in the French quarter just to prove I am a hypocrite.

No seriously fisherman's wharf is insanely crowded with tourists.

Oh if you guys wanna do Alcatraz get tickets right now. they sell out fast

To each his own.
For me, a football weekend is a football weekend. This is why I recommend Shattuck. It's plenty close to campus and within staggering distance to all the drinking establishments. Hotel Durant also works, but it's a long way to walk from BART with the roller board suitcase.

The Fairmont at Ghradelli is one of the northern most hotels on the peninsula. What's not to like about being near water's edge surrounded by all the amenities you'd ever need, including parks and piers? Tourist crowds are a lot thinner after school starts.

If you have a better SFO location for lodging than Fisherman's Wharf, then by all means share.

If I were going to the game, I'd be staying at a house that's about 500 yards due East of that building. So yeah, I know it's a long way away. I'm sure there's a BART station somewhere within about a 45 minute drive of HMB. The game is only one day. Gotta do something the rest of the time you're there, right?

first, you know i used to live in HMB, right? so i am more than a little familiar with the area.

second, if you going to do the tourist thing, HMB is hardly a jumping off point. golfers like the courses out there and the ritz is very nice for a long weekend of relaxing, but for pure tourist behavior, folks are way better off in the city.

third, there is no nearby bart. you'd have to drive over the hill to a bart station, park, and then go over to the game, and then repeat. that will take a super long time and limit the festivities substantially.

it depends on what you are looking for. locals like to express disdain for the really touristy areas and fisherman's wharf is the most maligned of the tourist areas. but, it is fun for out-of-towners, for sure.

one possible alternative would be the union square area-- also very touristy, but there are nicer shops, nicer restaurants, and nicer hotels in the vicinity. and, very close to bart, plus the symphony and the opera if you are looking to augment the trip with some culture. in the union square area, there are 2 kimpton hotels-- they are boutique, nice, with good amenities, and usually not hugely expensive. go to the kimpton hotel website and check them out-- one is called the hotel monaco and i can't remember the other one's name. i've stayed at both and enjoyed them.

then why are you trying to send some poor unsuspecting touristas out into the freaking boondocks? there is more livestock than people out there. it is foggy and usually cold. and it is a pain in the ass to get to and from. yet, you want some trusting soul to spend 600 buck a night or more to stay in a hotel that is several hours drive from the game.

sheesh.

The thing about planning Cal...
Is it a football weekend?
Or is it going to be a Bay Area vacation with a little football action on the side?

There are more options around cal than the combined total of Big XII destinations.

+1 for Union Square. It's central to everything and you can get good hotel deals. I've stayed at three Kimpton Hotels in that area. All were nice. The Monaco, Palomar, and Harbour Court (right on water closer to the financial district).

Sounds like Cal is a difficult road trip. Nowhere to stay, park or drink near the stadium. You'd think that if they were going to spend $350 million or whatever on that ridiculously-priced renovation, they would have added a hotel & mini convention center to the project to address some of this.

Hey - late September in Half Moon Bay is awesome. Yeah, it's foggy and kind of cold. Big deal. They'll probably have some kind of farm festival going on that weekend anyway. The pumpkin festival is probably two or three weeks later. Maybe a festival for artichokes or christmas trees.

Speaking of humblebrag, it's near impossible to get reservations to The French Laundry the night before the game.

When I traveled to the Stanford game a few years ago, I stayed in Half Moon Bay.

1. It was a week-long trip.
2. We had a toddler with us (beach and petting zoo farm).
3. It was our anniversary.
4. We rented a car.

If this doesn't sound like the type of trip you're making for the Cal game, staying in Half Moon Bay would be retarded.

Sounds alright. Are your wife and kid available?

How do you figure? Other than parking it's all easy. I would say public transportation and taxis are the way to go for most of the Bay Area unless you actually live there. Heck, if I didn't have a special parking pass, getting to Allbuff's tailgates would have been a nightmare. Plus, the hotels near Pearl had jacked up rates for game days. It's not that different than most cities IMO and I've been to many PAC 12 venues. The 350 million? That's just California brother. We now have an aircraft carrier welded onto the stadium, a high performance center, a big assed gym, cool conference rooms, killer alumni bars on the donor section and a solid earthquake retrofit. Do you need somewhere close to stay? A nice tailgate area? Somewhere to drink? Good transportation lines? Ask the bear...

The answer is obvious. Skip the trip to Berkeley and wait until the Buffs play Stanford.

Why? To outnumber them in the stadium? Heck, you'll be at 3-14 by then. It won't be any fun no matter what you're grilling that day.

You guys got the bear all riled up! You guys should know better than to tease them about public transport.

The bear is riled up because he bought a registry cleaner that somehow erased his porn bookmarks. Also, my Allbuffs membership dues are coming up and the notification does not go away. It looks like rep but there is no rep. Both are bull**** in my opinion.
