With it being just a LITTLE less than 24 hours (5:30 PM MT scheduled start tomorrow for Jenny Simpson) before the Buffs' Olympics begin, thought I'd set up this separate thread for any results and discussion of the actual Buffs' Olympic races and results.
(The thread for news leading up to the Olympic races is at https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/buffs-in-the-2016-rio-olympics.118116/ .)

As also mentioned in the other Olympics thread, there are 4 Buffs racing in the Olympics, 3 in track and 1 triathlete.

Forgot to mention in the OP that, due to something called Rule 40 (I assume set up to maximize the advertising benefit for overall Olympic track and field sponsors such as Nike), athletes (at least in track and field) can't even mention their sponsors (who obviously are huge in supporting their athletic dreams) for one month during and around the Olympics. So, as someone totally unaffiliated with any athletes, I wanted to be sure to note that Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn are sponsored by New Balance, while Jeremy Dodson is (per his Twitter page) an Adidas athlete. I'm not sure if triathlon has the same restriction but, just in case, Flora Duffy looks to be sponsored by many companies, all of which can be seen at http://www.fduffy.com/sponsors/ .

Here is Ms. Coburn's thank you instagram to New Balance she wrote right before the Rule 40 blackout period began-

Cubuffs (Neill Woelk) Article on, mainly, Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn, available at http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/8/...lums-simpson-coburn-ready-to-race-in-rio.aspx .

    "
All the hard work is done. Four years of training and racing, four years of long runs in the cold and heat, four years of track workouts, time in the training room, injuries and recovery, are in the books.

All that's left for Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn, two of the University of Colorado's most-decorated track and field athletes, is another competition on the world's largest stage.

Friday evening, Simpson will line up for her third Olympics when she runs in the first round of the 1,500-meter competition at Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Saturday morning, Coburn will walk to the line for her second Olympic competition when she races in the first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

    ...

Very nice, comfortable and safe (as possible) heat race for Jenny Simpson. and she qualifies for Sunday's semi-final.

Per the heat lists that can be seen in either the NBC or IAAF links in the OP, Emma Coburn is in Heat 2 of 3 of the steeple 1st round, which per her tweet below looks to have a 7:18 AM MT scheduled start tomorrow morning. Best of wishes to Ms. Coburn!
(Note- one small possible (???) correction to Ms. Coburn's tweet below. The IAAF heat sheets say it's actually "FIRST 3 IN EACH HEAT (Q) AND THE NEXT 6 FASTEST (Q)" who qualify for the final.)

Very solid race by Emma Coburn, as she leads most of the race and finishes in an auto-qualifying 2nd place position.

Emma qualified for the next round with a 9:18.12, 3rd fastest across 2 heats so far, but auto qualified, so doesn't really matter on the time itself.

Why isn't Pac 12 on Twitter even mention Emma and Jenny? Oh, too busy with all the swimming medals to care about track.

As noted in the article in the tweet Nik posted above, Jenny Simpson "is scheduled to run in the second heat, with the first heat set to begin at 6:30 p.m. (Mountain time) and the second heat at 6:41 p.m.

The top five finishers in each heat, plus the next two fastest finishers overall will advance to Tuesday's final. There are 12 runners in each semifinal heat.
    "

Full final start lists for tonight's 1500M races are at https://www.iaaf.org/competitions/o...esults/women/1500-metres/semi-final/startlist . Looks like Ms. Simpson is starting inside in lane 2. (If the semis are like the heats, there will also be a "Results" tab available at that page once the races are completed.)
    _______________________________________________________________

For Ms. Coburn, she is racing in the final tomorrow morning. "The steeplechase final is set to begin at 8:15 a.m. (MT). A total of 18 women are scheduled to run in the final."
(It was interesting to me that there were only 15 scheduled to be in the final, but they added 3 other women who didn't time qualify, but who were involved in of a 3 person pile-up a little ways back of the leaders in heat 3 yesterday. So, it will be an even more congested track than anticipated, which hopefully doesn't lead to any further accidents (especially around all the barriers steeplers have to contend with).)

Per the start list at https://www.iaaf.org/competitions/o...omen/3000-metres-steeplechase/final/startlist , looks like Ms. Coburn is starting in lane 6.

Note- Among many great competitors, the 2 big favorites of the race, either or both of whom may also challenge the world record (which is 8:58.81) IF the race goes out fast (And Ms. Jebet does seem to be a front runner) are-
    1) Bahrain's (via Kenya) Ruth Jebet, starting in lane 16 and
    2) Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi, starting in lane 9.

(Just for entertainment purposes- Assume odds may have changed now that the heats are done, but per Flotrack ( http://www.flotrack.org/article/44576-olympic-gambling-odds-women-s-track-events ) , European average betting site odds for Ms. Coburn before the Olympics started had her tied with 4 other women for 4th favorites to win gold, at 33-1. The 2 other women I noted above were, respectively, 6-4 and 21-20 favorites, with the last Olympic champion, Habiba Ghribi, being 3rd favorite at 10-1. Per another site I found, looks like Ms. Coburn has been given between 3-1 and 4-1 odds to medal.)

Doesn't look like Jeremy Dodson will advance to the semi-finals. (He came in 5th place in Heat 1, so was only 3rd of the non auto-qualifying times from that heat, with only the next 4 fastest overall advance out of the 10 heats, and there are 9 heats still to go.)

He did perform OK, finishing in 20.51, which was only a little off his 20.44 season's best.

Not that it usually means too much in distance races, but looks like Jenny Simpson is starting near the outside in lane 9 (of 12) for tonight's 1500M women's final (per https://www.iaaf.org/competitions/o...771/results/women/1500-metres/final/startlist) . As noted in the OP, the race is scheduled for a 7:30 PM Mountain Time start.

Note- No matter what happens in the race, it may be interesting how the post-race handshakes go tonight, as Ms. Simpson has evidently inferred (although she doesn't name anyone specifically) potential doping by tonight's favorite and current world record holder, Ethiopia's Genzebe DIibaba, in a USA Today article (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...-out-against-favored-genzebe-dibaba/88749508/). For those who don't follow running that closely, as the article notes, "Dibaba’s coach, Jama Aden, was arrested two months ago in Spain on suspicion of having performance-enhancing drugs."

Hopefully this year's race ends up being cleaner than 2012's Olympic 1500M final, which is called a "Race of Shame" in this article (See https://nz.sports.yahoo.com/rio-201...ion-sought-after-londons-race-of-shame/#page1) after 6 of the top 9 finishers have subsequently been disqualified for doping. America's Shannon Rowbury (also in tonight's final), who finished 6th in 2012, is now officially the 2nd place finisher after 4 who finished above her were disqualified. From the article, It doesn't sound like medals have been "re-distributed", so she's not (yet?) been awarded a silver medal.?. (Wonder if she ever will be awarded anything?)

Note that, due to Ms. Rowbury not yet being awarded any medal for 2012, both she and Jenny Simpson will both be trying to make history for America tonight, as the U.S. has never won a medal in the women's Olympic 1500M, which has been contested since 1972 (See Wikipedia for list of past medal winners - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1500_metres ).

    ________________________________________________________________________________________

Re Ms. Coburn, some nice "beyond the race itself/ thougthful" type articles out about her race:

    Runner's World- http://www.runnersworld.com/olympics/emma-coburn-wins-first-ever-us-medal-in-womens-steeplechase

    Washington Post- https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...698226-62e8-11e6-96c0-37533479f3f5_story.html

Another Washington Post article (based on something noted originally on the Flotrack website) describes how she nicely acknowledged her sponsor New Balance while still being in compliance with the disliked (by non-Nike athletes) Rule 40 (See my Post 3 above, along of course the articles themselves) for a little more detail) -- https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ew-balance-its-due-after-steeplechase-bronze/ , and http://www.flotrack.org/article/451...coburn-showcases-new-balance-on-olympic-stage .
