Central Arkansas @ Colorado Official Game Thread

Congrats guys :drink2: Richardson is a beast. We did have some overthrows, but made some great catches as well. I thought it was closer than the final score indicates. Both teams need to clean up the turnovers though haha. Hopefully this will be good experience going forward for us...good luck with the rest of the season!

Thanks for coming back, Bear. Solid. Your boys had us on the ropes in the fourth, and we were lucky that a couple of balls went our way. Good luck with the rest of your season. I'll be rooting for UCA in the tourney. FCS has a tournament, right?

Some take-away from last night. Subject to revision after viewing the broadcast when I get a chance.

Most importantly of all we didn't quit. The team faced adversity a number of different times, mostly of their own making and still won. In recent years they would have folded like a napkin.

We are better than expected but still missing some key parts. Pow isn't running like he did last year, he was never fast but had some quickness, that's gone right now and he isn't running with power either. Looks hurt. ToJo didn't look like a RB until the last drive. The rest of the game he was slow to the hole, didn't cut with authority, and went down easy. If we had CAU's tailback (Okie recruit) the same plays would have gone for significant yardage and we would have dominated.

Speaking of dominating our coverage teams have to be fixed. For the second week in a row we made average return men look like superstars. Next week Fresno is bringing in a returner who really is a star. Take away the big returns (just like last week) and this game is a laugher.

Our OL needs work. Nembot is still on a steep learning curve and the guy he faced is good. Can't blame him. Munyer on the other hand got dominated by some FCS level guys. He is not playing up to what we need, not even close.

DBs were spectacular. CAU had some bad throws later in the game that looked like they happened because our DBs were in the QBs head. Excellent game again.

WRs had a super game. McColloch just beat them up, He was covered and suddenly he has a gap and the ball, frustrated them. Spruce's big run at the end iced it. All of this set up by and still pales in comparison to PRich. CAU had a BCS level CB but it didn't matter. Their DC continued to try to cover him with one man and no safety help, bad idea although it may not have made that much difference, guys on a different planet right now.

Wood had an up and down game and made some bad throws under pressure. That said he didn't fold and instead came back and did what we needed to win. If Webb had been playing last night we lose by 10+ points.

And lastly fans still need to figure out this new coach thing. I escorted my daughter to the restroom when CAU went up at the end of the 3rd Q. Almost had to fight to get her back up the tunnel into the stadium again with all the people piling out having given up. Of course most of these won't know that the Buffs pulled it out for a few days anyways but Hawk/WB took a lot out of this program that will take some time to get back.

I'll be curious to see how CAU finishes the season.

They had a couple of what looked like major injuries last night. Most FCS teams aren't that deep so they may have lost more than a game. Still have very good talent for that level.

The victory was sweet. But I'm not convinced that it will spark a jump in attendance for Fresno State next week.

Going into the game, the general fan sentiment was that a PAC12 school such as CU SHOULD beat any FCS team. But there was a lingering memory of Sac State and Montana State losses at home fresh in the minds of CU fans.

The victory was entertaining, but beating a plucky Central Arkansas team in a hard fought battle does not exactly breed confidence that CU will avenge that traumatic blow-out by Fresno State last season.

There is plenty of evidence that this new coaching staff is on the right track. The team is playing with more discipline. The coaching decisions are maximizing the talent on the field. Most importantly, their is a team identity and a culture shift whereby players are showing resilience and a desire to fight through lead changes and find a way to stay in the game and play four quarters of gritty football.

Paul Richardson is back and has proven himself to be a rare talent who just so happens to be leading the land in receiving yards. Wood to PRich is the offense. Connor Wood has poise and is moving the chains, making catchable throws beyond the first down marker and unleashing a deep threat.

The defense is forcing turnovers and putting points on the board that tip the outcome in Colorado's favor. The addition of Gillum and Awuzie have helped the secondary. Orms, Henderson and CUD are playing with more experience and discipline. Things are looking up.

But glaring holes remain to be addressed. The O-Line lacks depth to withstand injury and lacks experience and skills to generate a balanced offensive attack. Pass protection is good, but the truth is that it has been against inferior competition. It is uncertain how good the Buff O-line will be against teams with bigger, faster, and more experienced defenses that are coming up on the schedule. Nembot struggles to seal the perimeter against a good rushing DE. Handler, Harris and Monyier played ok, but should be graded down for some missed assignments and holding penalties.

The rushing game is virtually non-existent. Powell has not proven himself to be durable. Jones and Abron have effectively been shut down. The roster desperately needs a tailback who is a playmaker.

The most frustrating vulnerability is on kick returns. The CU kick coverage has a serious inability to get to the return man and make a tackle. This is a trend that did not improve from week one to week two, and has been exploited by our opponents.

The fans will show up in force at Folsom when there is some confidence that CU belongs as a contender for the division title or conference championship game. MacIntyre needs a few signature wins against ranked teams before a ticket to Folsom becomes a hot commodity.

At this point, there is hope for a better future. But even at 2-0, some serious doubts remain about CU's place in the Pac12 as something other than a doormat.

This upcoming Fresno State game is huge. CU has an opportunity to exorcise some demons from last year against an explosive team that knows how to win. If CU finds a way to beat Fresno, then the confidence level for Pac 12 play will be huge. If CU gets blown out again, which could be a possibility given their shaky performance against Central Arkansas, then it may be a while before 52,000 people choose to find their way into Folsom.

Rick George has is work cut out for him to restore capacity crowds.

Don't get me wrong because I'm thrilled with the win yesterday but recognize neither team is going to show its best the second game of the season. If CAU ends up knocking down 9 or 10 wins and do well in the FCS playoffs then I'll be more impressed with yesterdays win. They do indeed appear to have talent at several positions and decent coaching as well.

I agree, but even in better times they haven't been great. I didn't know about the mess with it taking it so long for the students to get in until I read some of comments here, they need to solve that problem.

I understand having low attendance after the mess that has been the past several years and playing a FCS team, but I have been to many games over the years when we weren't God-aweful and playing great teams and still having empty seats or WAY to many seats filled by fans from the opposing team because CU fans sold their tickets.
I believe when this turns around the fan base will blow up just like basketball. Actually, I'm surprised the number last night was that low. The crowd seemed much bigger. Oh well.

Wait you're saying our fanbase sucks yet you were completely unaware of the student entrance cluster****? Huh..

And please, post examples of those games (I know 1994 ISU is going to be one)

Says a lot!

Powell is hurt. Playing through it. Deep thigh bruise. Probably a repeat on this..... Hope he feels better soon!

35k announced at game ....terrible.... I will say the people who were there were loud.... shows just how much damage has been done the past few years

USC is looking beatable, too. They have major issues at QB. But I want no part of ASU right now, they are scary.
Wishing hard that this might be possible! Pretty please! How fun would that be in the thick of November football! But we have much to work on to have a legit shot!

I walked by the student entrance right before the game. There were hardly any students trying to get in. They all try to get in after kick off. I am tired of people blaming the entrance process. That is not the problem at all. The students need to get there on time period.

Uhh, wrong. I walked by that entrance before every game to go in the main front entrance to Folsom. The students were backed up in a huge line once again

Dude there were like 8 students there 10 minutes before game time. I should have taken a picture. I will next time

No, no there wasn't

People have been bitching about the students not being on time for years, I don't think it's going to change until standing room in the student section is a premium, much like basketball

Please see pic. No excuse for this. 5 minutes before Ralphie took the field. This is pathetic. Don't blame the security people. I planned and got there early. I did not see many students at the line at all. It is almost like people expect to be able to walk right in if you get there right at kick off. Give me a break. Look at the pic. So you are telling me that most of those people who ended up filling a majority of that section were outside in line dying to get in??? You sir need to go to 20/20 institute.

Great, i wish you had taken a picture, because you're wrong.

I would figure that we would argue about this stuff if we were 0-2..... This discussion has much more appeal last year....

Tailgate environment outside the gates > pre-game stadium environment inside Folsom.

This could be fixed with better hospitality.

beer sales
modern bleachers with seat backs
amazing in stadium wireless coverage
Pregame on-field family oriented activities:
little kids pass, kick and catch,
high school drum lines,
youth cheerleader routines

But by all means, go ahead and keep dumping on fans for lack of institutional investments on basic sports marketing concepts.

On-field activities...if you allow activities on the field before the game where are the teams going to warm up? It really doesn't work. And before the there's time for the players to come out and do all their ****, well I got to the stadium at 2:30 and the special teams players for both teams were doing work along with the QB's warming up, it just doesn't work. The student section doesn't need seatbacks, but the rest of the stadium does. Beer, I agree 100%.

I don't think you have been to very many stadiums around the country, have you?

Professional sports marketing involves providing endless diversions in addition to the actual game on the field.

Rick George knows this. The Rangers baseball team (the one that went to the World Series) includes a bunch of extra curricular activities that keep the fans happy. There are Elvis Impersonators riding around on motorbikes riding around the field, little kids running from left field to actually steal a MLB third base, fireworks during and after the game, ect.

SMU does a great job trotting out little kids for 30 second moments to show off their baton twirling.

Simply leveraging 15 second or 30 second intervals after the teams go back to the locker rooms and before ralphie runs is totally doable. I'm not suggesting altering the warm up routine, just to better leverage the pregame use of the field.

This isn't professional sports, this is college football, the day they start riding impersonators on motorcycles around the field is the day I stop watching college football (I do realize that you were just throwing examples out, but still there have to be better ones than that). I understand what you are saying, but I don't see it being much of a boost.

Not trying to dump on fans. I am just pointing out that the reason for people not showing up early has nothing to do with the security people at the gate. Besides that I agree with everything you wrote and the need for all the things you listed.
