I've avoided speculation on new coaches, mostly because it made me a little uncomfortable.
But I'm beginning to distance myself from the current staff enough to participate.
Okay, I realize that Coach McCarney isn't on anybody's dream list. His overall record at ISU wasn't spectacular. I've gotta believe it was somewhat better than Chizak's however.
What he did manage to do was take his underresourced, undertalented teams to five bowl games. Not great bowls, but he knocked out some winning seasons in our division in an environment of minimal fan and institutional support (speculating on that last one, but c'mon...Iowa State). He won a couple bowls, lost a few more, but they were always close.
He's been at Florida and South Florida, and may have developed some contacts down there. Coupled with a staff that has some sway in California and Texas, maybe he can recruit.
He would probably fit our school's budget, and could have some genuine success in a school with better recognition, tradition, facilities and a fat Nike contract. Also, assuming the talent we have now, stays, he'd have a little something to work with.
Just spit-ballin' here, I'm not exactly sold on this idea--but it hasn't been floated yet either.
When dealing with the fiscal realities of our Athletic Department, is this guy a legitimate candidate?
