Perhaps this has been discussed elsewhere....if so, my apologies.

Last night's coverage of the Fiesta Bowl was one of the worst broadcasts I have ever seen.

    - 2 unknown, horrible announcers with no insight
    - More commercial breaks than I have ever seen
    - After each play, shots of the frickin UT and OSU bands
    - Close-ups of gatorade containers on several occasions
    - Too many shots of Colt's parents
    - Too many shots of Mack Brown, and his non-coaching activities
    - Missed action because of break away shots of the previous 4 items.

I could go on and on...

I really really hate NFL guys doing CFB games.

They have to show a lot of commercials because they pay such an exorbitant amount of $$ to broadcast the games. I freaking hate it too since it ruins the flow of the game. I wish there were no such things as TV timeouts and I would hate being in crowd waiting for the game to resume. I really wish they would broadcast football games the way they do with soccer games and just have a logo at the top of screen (****, even the field would be nice for the game's entirety) and don't break for commercials.

does this mean Aikman and Buck will do the BCS MNC game call on Thursday, with Switzer and Johnson in the studio..... now that itself is quite a story right there apart from the game.....

Nope...more no-name announcers, even more commercials, and 1,000 shots of the OU and Florida bands between plays.

It's almost a mathematical impossibility that they would show the band during those 4 (non-consecutive) seconds that they won't be playing that damn song in a 3.5 hour timespan.

During the Fiesta Bowl, the play-by-play announcer for the championship game gave us a preview. I had never seen the guy before. Why would they not have Aikman and Buck?

I don't know... an acute attack of human decency and/or rational thought?

If I were a Giants fan I think I'd still feel a little burned by Buck's abysmal play-by-play work on their last drive of the Super Bowl last year. "Eli goes back... there's some pressure... he moves... throws the ball to Tyree, who... catches the ball."

Note: That previous line needs to be read in a Ben Stein-esque monotone to make it true to the original broadcast.

Relative to the goons that did the game last night, Aikman and Buck are gods...

Hockey games generally do pretty well at this also, there are only a few, short breaks during the periods... if any.

Fox's sports broadcast organization is built around the NFL and a somewhat glossier level of coverage like NBC's. Because they don't have a true, separate 24 sports channel they do almost no human interest stories other than the obvious ones. They have fewer reporters.

ESPN on the other hand has to fill a 24hr cycle on 4 channels. They have a lot more reporters, do a lot more research, and have a lot more compelling people on their staff. The highest rated of the BCS bowl so far, as the SI articles points out, was ESPN's Rose Bowl. ESPN apparently won the bid to take over the BCS in 2011?

Given the dismal ratings Fox is probably happy to be rid of it. ABC was not willing to pay what Fox paid for the same reason they let go of MNF. I think FOX was just unwilling, given the poor return so far, to make the investment in the staffing as well as to use Fox Sports net to more effectively over hype their games and it shows. The Holiday bowl supposedly almost had a higher Nielsen rating than the Sugar and Orange combined.

Yes, ESPN did win the bid to take over the BCS bowls starting with 2010 season, I believe - which would actually be the 2011 BCS bowls, which I assume is what you meant. I'm not surprised that the Rose Bowl got the best rating because it was played on Jan. 1 and in the perfect late-afternoon timeslot. Hopefully ESPN will add 1 more BCS bowl to Jan. 1 and also not spread them out over a week, which is ridiculous.

And another thing - since they waited a whole week to play the NC game, why didn't they just go ahead and wait 1 more day and play it on a Friday night when most people don't have to get up early the next day???

Because I think there are a lot of politics involved in it. I think the bowl committees and the network executives tussle over this all the time. What time gets you the most views/least distractions? Playing the game on Thursday cant be too good for ticket sales either.

This Year was a great set up for having at least two of these games on 1/1 and then the other two evening or daytime of 1/2 and 1/3 culminating with the mNC game on Sunday night 1/4.

Pretty stupid if you ask me.

I think for some reason the networks like to avoid Friday nights for big games, probably because they think that more people will be out to dinner/partying/winding down from week or whatever instead of sitting down to watch TV. I'm not buying that reasoning, but that's just my guess as to what their screwed-up thinking is. They also avoided a Friday night for the NC game either last year or the year before, when they waited until Monday night to play the game even though there weren't any bowls on Friday night. I just don't get it.

The guy who did the play by play at the Fiesta Bowl is actually the San Diego Padres TV announcer. He seemed to call the football game like he does the baseball games.

I do not know if they need a full week or so between the regular Bowl game and the NCG, but I guess they need 3-4 days at least for logistic reasons. 3 of the 4 BCS venues are NFL venues also and 2 of them actually hosted playoff game this past weekend, but more importantly ... depending on the teams you get to play in your bowl, you have around 50,000 visitors from all over the country who need to stay somewhere and who need to get in and out of the city at the same time. I don´t think you want 4 different fanbases in your city at the same time if you can avoid it as that could be a logistic nightmare. And I guess you need one full day to clean the stadium, repaint the endzones and change the general decoration.

And then weekends are off limits because of the NFL playoffs.

I think you have to think of it in terms of the demographics. The networks are trying to find an audience where they can get the easiest and most valuable commerical contracts for the programing they are paying for. Advertisers want the younger white male audience becuase they still have not picked their toothpaste and deodorant or beer yet. If they have picked their more easily influenced to change brands. The older you are the less likey you are to change. You pick Friday and some advertisers probably balk at buying because of the risk of a smaller audience or a niche audience. They get more of the viewers (probably like you and me) that cant or will not go out (families and older males) whereas the young guys are partying. Friday is also commonly a family date night. Double jeopardy so to speak.

You and I just want a good game on is the truth. :smile2:

I agree with this! I think Fox does a horrible job of covering bowl games. They cover no college football all season long then they come in at the end with no name announcers and do all the big games. It makes no sense and although i regularly complain about ESPN for this and that I will be glad to see people covering the bowl games that are up to speed on the entire college football season.

Did anyone listen to Pat Summerall (sp) do the Cotton Bowl? That was a travesty! That guy is so old, he didn't even seem to notice where he was. Pat was good once, not anymore, he needs to hang it up.

I agree with the stadium prep point but I think the fans in town are somewhat of a non issue. I kind of see the Thursday game as harder on the traveler. But since these things are a chamber of commerce event I guess they are hoping to trap you for the entire weekend. This is why I think the mNC game would have been better on a Sunday night but your right in that the Dolphins played that Sunday. I guess this is the price for playing it in NFL venues.

I don't much about marketing but what you say here makes some sense. Unfortunately as viewers, they're less concerned about us and more about what the advertisers want since they're the ones forking over the bucks.

I guess this would be similar to the reason that they don't move the Super Bowl to Saturday night. Since they've inexplicably moved the game to so late in the day, I think most viewers would prefer to have this game on Saturday night.

    :yeahthat:

It was sad. Summerall always annoyed me with his Cowboys/Giants/49ers homerism, but it was sad listening to him stumble his way through the Cotton Bowl.

The most embarassing part was at the end when he told Brian Baldinger that it was nice to meet him and get the chance to work with him. Baldinger's reply was "it was nice to work with you AGAIN." Pat clearly had no idea the two had ever met, much less worked together before... :sad1:

Yeah, Fox sucks at CFB and shouldn't be doing the BCS games. The worst part is their 'panel' for pregame and half time. 4 jokers who haven't paid attention to CFB in 10-20 years. They should comment about Formula 1 racing instead of CFB, they'd be more believable.

Personally, I can't stand Switzer and Johnson. A couple of F'ing idots who are so far removed from the college game they have forgotten what it's about. Switzer guaranteed that Utah would lose to Bama...what an ass clown. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but compared to those two I'd prefer drooling Lou Holtz. :puke:
