It remains to be seen. I feel like I don’t have to hurry, which is an interesting feeling. At Colorado and at Washington I always had this feeling like I was behind and that I had to catch up. I always felt like there was so much that had to be done. Not that there isn’t a lot to do here, and it’s not like we’re not behind and have catching up to do, but I feel like I don’t need to hurry, and because of that, you take more time to make better decisions which I hope will pan out and create the successful environment and the successful program that everyone is looking for.
And this SURPRISES You?!?!?!I don't hate Coach Neu. But i did have a issue with this response.
Catching up rick? Come on. He's such a smart guy, then he spouts crap like this. Coach Mac handed you the keys to a lamborghini, and by the time you were done with this program, you turned it into a 1990 Honda. Maybe i'm taking it wrong. But it sounds like he's still making up excuses for the crappy coaching job he did here.

Correct me if i'm wrong but Pesavento was a Juco kid that GB pulled in. Same with Chris Brown. Cortlen Johnson was Ricks RB.

Cortlen was also probably the most vitally important back on that team... certainly the most versatile. Rick also brought in Dan Graham, Michael Lewis, Andre Gurode, Victor Rodgers, and the rest of that monstrous '01 senior class, he deserves credit for that at the very least.

It's a lot easier to pass the buck and blame others than it is to step up and take responsibility. As we've seen with Rick time and again, personal responsibility is not one of his strong suits.
I can't believe UCLA gave this guy the HC job. They deserve whatever happens to them. He doesn't have an ethical bone in his body. He's always looking for the angle.
I don't agree the Mac comment. The team was a solid contender.
10-2 in 1995.
10-2 in 96.
5-6 in 97?
7-4 in 98.
These numbers say to me that Neu didn't recruit well here. Sure he had the 4 and 5 star kids that grabbed the headlines as far as recuiting goes, but he never recruited for depth imo. Sure we went to the B12 Championship in 2001 But you have to give it to GB. He pulled the peices together, with some of RN kids sure. But i think GB deserves full credit for that one.

We were 8-4 in 98.
Rick recruited the majority of the starters on the 01 championship team(six on offense, 5 on defense, and both kickers) and a healthy chunk of the important reserves. He also recruited Ben Kelly, Brad Bedell, Moschetti, Tom Ashworth, and other guys that Gary Barnett basically wasted in 99 and 00. If GB deserves full credit for 01, that just underscores what a fiasco the previous two seasons were. That 99 team should have played for the conference title.
I'm not saying that Rick didn't have his flaws, but the storyline that Mac left things in perfect shape and the program was ruined by Slick Rick is not true. Its ancient history now, but GB used that Slick Rick stuff as his alibi for years, and its crap. But then, GB exceeded even Rick in the excuses dept. Everything was always somebody else's fault, and that ultimately sealed GB's fate.
I repeat though: I hate Rick Neuheisel. How he left in 98 was sleaze-tastic.

You keep saying the 1999 team should have played for the conference title, but where is the logic in that statement? Sure there was some talent on that team, but it didn't really seem like a complete team. That was one of the hallmarks of the Neuheisel era-quite a few talented guys scattered at different positions, but the team as a whole lacking cohesion, discipline, and toughness. I think the Neuheisel era teams really lacked mental toughness for the most part. They were prone to dumb penalties and played overall sloppy football. That starts at the very top and that's why you won't find CU fans defending Neuheisel. So you can say Barnett royally screwed the pooch with the 1999 team, but that team wouldn't have gone anywhere with Neuheisel either.
He did say Colorado was a "have not" when he took the Washington job.
My opinion is that the 99 team had as much talent if not more than the 01 team. And furthermore, judging by the improvement from 97 to 98 I don't think its a stretch to say that a young 8-4 team with very close conference losses to top-ten teams (Nebraska and KSU) would have made steps forward the next year. And you can criticize Neuheisel as a coach all you want, but my main point was that the idea that Rick Neuheisel left the program in a shambles is simply not true.

Too bad hawkins didn't "bomb" with barnett's team in year one at 7-5.
